A new listing on the Samsung store has confirmed the price and release date for one of the company's most interesting gadgets. DeX, the docking station which allows users to convert their Galaxy S8 phones into a desktop computer, will retail for $149.99 and will hit the shelves in late April.

While a leak from last week already revealed the price tag and specs of the dock, information about the commercial launch for the DeX was scarce prior to the "Unpacked" event held on March 29. The Samsung store indicates that the device will ship in "late April". Basically, …

Microsoft to Launch Windows 10 Creators Update for Phones on April 25

Microsoft will officially kick off the Windows 10 Creators Update rollout on April 11 for PCs, and just like the company told us a few weeks back, phones will not be included in the initial release, as desktop computers are considered a priority right now.

The Redmond-based software giant confirmed today that the Windows 10 Creators Update would be released for phones on April 25, but once again, this is no guarantee that you'll get it the same day.

Available for each device depends on a long series of factors, including carrier and region, and Microsoft says that the release for mobile device will take place in stages as well.

Rollout to complete in "several months"

In other words, it could take weeks or even months until you get the Creators Update, and this time, there will be no way to get it earlier, as it's the case on the PC where users can turn to stand-alone ISOs to install the new OS version.

"Windows Phone will follow the same phased approach, with rollout scheduled to begin April 25. Note that update availability may vary by manufacturer, model, country or region, mobile operator or service provider, specific installed software, hardware limitations and other factors such as feedback from customers," Microsoft said in a statement today.

On the other hand, the company says it's aiming to release the Creators Update to all devices within the next "several months," and although no specifics are provided, it shouldn't take too long before everyone gets it.

"We'll iterate this process over a period of several months until all compatible devices running Windows 10 worldwide are offered the Creators Update," the firm says.

If you can't wait for Microsoft to push the go-ahead button for the Creators Update on Windows 10 Mobile devices, you can always join the Windows Insider program to see what's new. Build 15063 is the RTM version and is 99 percent similar to what you're going to get on the launch day, though some bugs are still possible.

Sony Xperia L1: 5-inch entry level smartphone with quad-core, 2GB RAM and 13MP-5MP camera

Details WhaTech Channel: Mobile Reviews Published: 30 March 2017 Submitted by Eza Ezamie News from Eza Ezamie Viewed: 0

Sony Xperia L1 photo

In what is the first in its series, Sony Xperia L1 is set to be the Japanese first entry-level series in this newly launched lineup. Being entry-level is one thing, but will it be value for money?

To put things into perspective, let's take a look at last year's entry-level smartphone for Sony – the E5:

  • 5-inch HD IPS capacitive touchscreen with 720 x 1280 pixels or ~294 ppi pixel density
  • Scratch-resistant glass protection
  • Mediatek MT6735 chipset, Quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Mali-T720MP2 graphics and 1.5GB RAM
  • 13MP primary camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • 5MP secondary camera
  • Android Marshmallow 6.0
  • 16GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 200GB maximum
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 2700 mAh battery that provides up to 2 days of battery life
  • Single SIM and 4G LTE
  • June 2016 release date
  • $219 USD price tag
  • In conclusion, Xperia E5 is your average entry-level smartphone but comes with a hefty price. The only thing that stands out is its camera, the latest Marshmallow OS (at that time) and two days of battery life (although this is partly caused by its low power requirement or low specs).

Now that we've taken a look at last year's entry-level smartphone, it is about time it got replaced with the Xperia L1. Here you go then with its specs:

  • 5.5-inch HD IPS capacitive touchscreen with 720 x 1280 pixels or ~267 ppi pixel density
  • Scratch-resistant glass protection
  • Mediatek MT6737T chipset, Quad-core 1.45 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Mali-T720MP2 graphics and 2GB RAM
  • 13MP primary camera with f/2.2 aperture, autofocus and LED flash
  • 5MP secondary camera with f/2.2 aperture and 24 mm
  • 16GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Android Nougat 7.0 OS
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 2620 mAh battery
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • Expected April 2017 release date
  • We all know that numbering plays a factor, the higher the number – the better it gets. Well, if the Xperia L1 has the lowest spec, then we can expect better things to come, right?

The Xperia L1 is quite good for an entry-level smartphone. It comes equipped with a 5.5-inch HD screen with a scratch-resistant glass providing a certain level of protection.

For its performance, the Xperia L1 will be sporting the MT6737T chipset paired with a basic 1.45GHz quad-core processor, good graphics and a reasonable 2GB RAM. This combination means that you can probably run only the basic of apps like your favourite social media and simple games. Don't expect it to run blazingly fast though.

Camera-wise, it comes with a 13MP-5MP camera setup which is more than capable of dishing out good-looking photos. This should satisfy your daily dose of taking selfies and uploading photos all at once.

Regarding storage, there's only 16GB available internally. Surely that won't be enough to install all the required apps and games that you like – but should you want more space, just pop in a microSD card that can take in up to 256GB.

A reasonable 2620 mAh battery is there that should be able to power up the Xperia L1 for a full day.

Last but not least, there's the latest Android Nougat 7.0 OS on the smartphone upon its release. This should provide a boost regarding performance which would benefit the Xperia L1 greatly.

    Conclusion:

Sony Xperia L1 is the latest entry-level series that should do well in the market. Equipped with a 5.5-inch screen, decent protection, decent performance, good camera and the latest Nougat 7.0 OS should be more than capable for those seeking a basic smartphone for their daily needs.

Sony Xperia L1 is set to be released in April 2017 although there's no official confirmation on its price yet. It will be available in Black, White and Pink.

Revenues from Flexible AMOLED Display on Pace to Exceed Rigid AMOLED Panel in Q3 2017, IHS Markit Says

"Smartphone brands believe using flexible AMOLED panels in their latest high-end products will differentiate themselves from competitors still using rigid AMOLED displays or liquid crystal displays"

LONDON (27 March 2017) – As demand for the flexible AMOLED display continues to sharply increase, its revenues are expected to reach $3.2 billion in the third quarter of 2017, exceeding that of rigid AMOLED panels at $3.0 billion, according to IHS Markit (Nasdaq: INFO), a world leader in critical information, analytics and solutions.

With many smartphone brands planning to apply flexible AMOLED displays to their high-end product lines, revenues for flexible AMOLED panels are expected to grow over 150 percent compared to 2016. On the other hand, rigid AMOLED panels, now mainly used for mid-range smartphones, are forecast to decline 2 percent in revenues from 2016.

"Smartphone brands believe using flexible AMOLED panels in their latest high-end products will differentiate themselves from competitors still using rigid AMOLED displays or liquid crystal displays," said Jerry Kang, principal analyst of display research at IHS Markit.

"Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have launched some of their flagship smartphones with flexible AMOLED displays since 2013, but have yet to become mainstream products given there was limited panel supply," Kang said. "Since 2016, however, many more panel makers have focused their efforts on increasing their supply capacity for flexible AMOLED displays. They have also tried to optimize the manufacturing process and design better structure of these panels, making flexible AMOLED display a favored choice for smartphones makers."

According to AMOLED & Flexible Display Intelligence Service by IHS Markit, most smartphone makers are aiming to apply flexible AMOLED displays to their products in 2017, but some of them would still find it difficult due to the higher price tag.

"Currently, the cost to make flexible AMOLED panels is much higher than that of rigid AMOLED, but it is possible that costs will fall below that of rigid panels in the future as manufacturing yield rates improve," Kang said.

AMOLED & Flexible Display Intelligence Service by IHS Markit covers the latest market trend and forecast of AMOLED displays (including shadow mask and PI substrate), technology analysis, and panel maker's strategy by region.

Nokia readies big release: Nokia 3, 5 and 6 smartphones to arrive together in 120 markets globally

Nokia, the global tech major, after unveiling the Nokia 3, 5 and 6 smartphones in January, is all set to launch the devices in many parts of the world. Earlier, only the Nokia 6 was available on the market, but that too, only in China.

HMD Global, the new owner of the Nokia brand has announced that the smartphones will be launched in the second quarter this year. HMD Global told NokiaPowerUser that it will be rolling out the entire series of smartphones in the second quarter of 2017. The phones will be released in almost 120 markets, and all at the same time.

The company in a statement to NPU said, "HMD has ambitious plans to release Nokia 3, 5 and 6 in 120 markets at the same time in Q2 2017. This is ambitious because HMD is de facto a start-up, though it has support from Nokia and Foxconn."

  • Top five revelations from Wikileaks' 'Vault 7'

  • North Korea's latest missile footage released as US THAAD missile system deployed in South Korea

  • Meanwhile, Nokia Mobile tweeted, "@nokiamobile: We're aiming to release worldwide in Q2 2017 (April - June) at an affordable price and great quality." HMD had unveiled the Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 smartphones, alongside the worldwide release of Nokia 6 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. It claimed that the comeback with Nokia 6 smartphone has been a hit as it was sold out in 23 seconds in China in its first sale. It added that customer satisfaction has been 97 per cent.

Best deals on gadgets and smartphones

At the MWC event, Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri, had said, "We've achieved many things in our 150-year history.

One thing for us is to create technology that will help connect the world." Apart from the phones, the company also talked about Ozo, their 360-degree camera for virtual reality.

    © image

The Nokia 3 smartphone has a 5-inch HD display, Gorilla Glass, and comes with an 8MP selfie camera. It has been priced at 139 Euros. All of these devices will be available from the second quarter of the year. All these phones run the latest pure Android Nougat. Nokia 6 has a special art black version which looks glossy just like the iPhone 7 Jet Black. Nokia 5 device has also been announced but with a smaller 5.2-inch display. It comes in blue, copper, black and silver colours and has been priced at 189 Euros.

Nokia had already launched the Nokia 6 smartphone in China, the first phone after the brand was acquired by HMD Global. But the company is aggressively making a foray into the global market again. When it comes to specifications the Nokia 6 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage (expandable up to 128GB via microSD card).

It has dual amplifier speaker with Dolby Atmos technology for sound output. Nokia 6 features a 16MP PDAF rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and an 8MP front camera. It is backed by a powerful 3,000 mAh battery. The home button in Nokia 6 doubles up as a fingerprint sensor. It is a 4G-enabled smartphone that supports Bluetooth v4.1, Wi-Fi, GPS and USB-OTG. According to a press statement by HMD Global, more Android smartphones will be unveiled in H1 2017.

Once the world's dominant cellphone maker, Nokia missed out on the transformation of the mobile market to smartphones. Thereafter, Nokia chose Microsoft's Windows operating system for its 'Lumia' range. After the Nokia-Microsoft deal in 2014, Microsoft continued to sell cheaper basic phones under Nokia's name and Lumia smartphones by its own name but abandoned both the businesses last year. Meanwhile, HMD last month took over the Nokia feature phone business and bagged the deal of Nokia brand (phones and tablets) for the next decade.

Look at the Galaxy S8 next to Apple’s iPhone 7

In just five short days, Samsung's new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be official. No more leaks, no more rumors, and best of all, no more waiting. Well actually, Android fans are in store for some more waiting of course, since Samsung's next-generation flagship phones won't actually be released until next month on either April 21st or April 28th. But any remaining questions will be answered next Wednesday and Android fans will begin the process of deciding whether or not to buy one of Samsung's hot new handsets.

There are plenty of factors that will impact that decision, of course, and different people have different priorities when it comes to shopping for a new smartphone. If there's one thing that just about everyone will likely agree on, however, it's the fact that Samsung's new design for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ is absolutely incredible. Now, a new pair of Galaxy S8 leaks on Friday give us a terrific reminder of just how impressive Samsung's new design truly is.

Take a good look at the photo above, which was posted on Weibo on Friday. The phone on the left is Apple's iPhone 7, of course, and the phone on the right is a Galaxy S8. Both phones are about the same width, as you can see, and the Galaxy S8 is a bit taller. Despite how similar the phones' overall footprints are, however, the iPhone 7 has a 4.7-inch screen while the Galaxy S8's display measures 5.8 inches diagonally.

To help put that in perspective, think about the iPhone 7 Plus. In order to fit a 5.5-inch screen into a smartphone, Apple had to make it 16% wider and 15% taller than the iPhone 7. Meanwhile, the Super AMOLED display in the Galaxy S8 is even bigger than the one in the iPhone 7 Plus.

The second big Galaxy S8 leak on Weibo comes from a different user on Friday, and it shows a gold version of the phone with the display turned on. We've seen the phone powered on before, of course — like in our big Galaxy S8 exclusive earlier this month — but this photo serves as a great reminder of just how impressive Samsung's S8 design really is.

The bezels on the sides of the screen are practically non-existent, and the bezels above and below the display are thinner than ever. As a result, Samsung has gotten closer than any other global smartphone vendor to achieving the all-screen handset we've been waiting for.

HMD has ambitious plans of releasing Nokia Android Phones in 120 markets at same time

There is a wide yawning gap between official unveil of Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 3310 and the final intended release to markets. The phones were announced on Feb 26 at MWC 2017, but all the signs we get till now indicates a release in starting May and extended to June and beyond depending upon markets. We shared what we gathered from our sources and retailers, about release dates in various markets in our earlier article.

But now we have got official word from HMD regarding this wide gap between unveil of phones and their market launch. HMD seems to be working on stocking the Phones before a big release in Q2, 2017.

HMD has ambitious plans to release Nokia 3, 5 and 6 in 120 markets at same time in Q2 2017. This is ambitious because HMD is de facto a start-up, though it has support from Nokia and Foxconn.

So, now it seems Nokia Android Phones and Nokia 3310 will be released in one big launch globally in the month of May. Though we still believe different markets will get slightly different release dates. But it will be a pleasant surprise for sure if HMD really pulls it off.

Smartphone demand buoys Japan's electronic parts makers

TOKYO -- Consumers, it seems, still love their smartphones. At least they love their new smartphones, demand for which seems to be lifting Japanese electronics parts makers out of a prolonged slump.

Shigenao Ishiguro, TDK's president and CEO, is upbeat.

"We estimate global smartphone shipments will grow nearly 10% on year in the April-June period," he said. "Shipments remain solid, led by emerging markets." Earnings will also be supported by a relatively weaker yen against the dollar.

Overall shipments at Japan's electronic parts makers are trending higher. The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association said its members' global shipments in December grew 4.7% from a year earlier, arresting a 12-month decline.

The global shipment figure had turned negative after Apple cut orders for its iPhone 6S. But the latest iPhones are now selling well, and Chinese smartphone sales are riding a wave of momentum.

Japanese parts makers stand to benefit from both trends now that they have weaned themselves off an excessive reliance on Apple and boosted sales to Chinese smartphone makers.

Chinese brands' penchant for adding advanced features to their products is also driving parts demand, said Shoichi Tosaka, president and CEO of Taiyo Yuden.

"We think demand for high-end electronic parts will remain solid," he said.

Yoshitaka Fujita, executive deputy president of Murata Manufacturing, said his company expects "two-digit sales growth in the year ending March 2018, which we believe will come from demand for smartphones with advanced features, one of our strengths."

The world's key smartphone makers are aggressively procuring parts, according Alps Electric President Toshihiro Kuriyama.

Samsung Electronics, which suffered a major setback last year due to a model that became known for bursting into flames, now aims to regain lost ground. Meanwhile, Apple is poised to release a major upgrade to its iPhone line, and Chinese makers are in expansion mode.

Combined, the big brands appear to be preparing to make more smartphones than what the market can soak up, industry insiders say. This is putting parts makers on the spot to identify which phones will succeed -- a customer that miscalculates what its sales will be could leave its suppliers with excess stock.

Demand varies from component to component. Murata Manufacturing is getting a lot of orders for high-frequency communication devices. Kyocera's crystal components are in high demand. By contrast, prices of some connectors and capacitors are falling, according to industry sources.

Demand for semiconductors remains solid. Supplies of NAND flash memory are not meeting demand. NAND flash not only goes into smartphones, but also digital cameras, USB drives and myriad products other than smartphones. Current prices are high, leaving the industry in fine shape.

Then there are image sensors. As sales of smartphones with dual rear cameras take off, Sony is getting flooded with orders for these components.

Times are good for display makers, too, as they fill demand from producers of smartphones, TVs and monitors for car interiors and virtual reality headsets. The trend has helped reinvigorate sales at Japan Display and Sharp.

Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone to come with Bixby voice-assistant

SAN FRANCISCO: Samsung announced today that a voice-powered digital assistant named "Bixby" will debut with a flagship Galaxy S8 smartphone set to be unveiled by the South Korean consumer electronics giant.

Bixby enters a crowded field of digital assistants powered by artificial intelligence that includes Apple's Siri, Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana and Amazon's Alexa.

Samsung said Bixby will focus on letting people control mobile apps with spoken directives.

"Bixby will be our first step on a journey to completely open up new ways of interacting with your phone," Samsung Electronics head of research and development Injong Rhee said in a release.

"Bixby will be a new intelligent interface on our devices."

A Galaxy S8 smartphone expected to be unveiled next week will have a set of pre-installed applications that will work with Bixby, according to Samsung.

Samsung late last year bought Viv, an artificial intelligence startup with co-founders who wer e part of the team that built virtual assistant Siri, which Apple bought some seven years ago.

Bixby will differ from digital aides already on the market in ways that include controlling nearly all tasks in applications instead of limited sets, and being flexible when it comes to understanding what users are saying, according to Samsung.

"We do have a bold vision of revolutionizing the human-to-machine interface, but that vision won't be realized overnight," Rhee said.

Amazon, Apple, Samsung, Google and Microsoft are all vying to develop the most sophisticated connected assistant -- working to give software the ability to understand what people say and even anticipate desires or needs.

Amazon virtual assistant Alexa was a star at the Consumer Electronics Show gadget gala early this year in Las Vegas but faces fierce competition.

Chinese giant Baidu also used the show to showcase virtual assistant "Little Fish" that it was preparing for a debut in China.

Samsung Galaxy S8 leak and release date surface on internet

The release date of Samsung's 2017 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8, has been leaked all over the internet. Apparently, it is set to be in stores on April 21, and preorders would be available starting April 7. Though the phone was planned to be unveiled in two weeks, a purple version of the Galaxy S8 has leaked, but it doesn't tell much.

There were a lot of rumors about the release date of the new Samsung smartphone since last year, but Samsung has remained pretty secretive about it. However, a promotional poster of the 2017 flagship phone has been around social media, and Samsung customers seem to be pretty excited about the new Galaxy S8 (SM-G950).

Samsung's new phone is almost ready for customers. Several sources have affirmed it is set to be released on April 21, 2017. The smartphone is expected to be officially unveiled in less than two weeks by the company. Some people say this will happen on March 29, at an event that the company is holding in New York City.

Invitations have been sent to the press. The specific features and innovations of the new Galaxy will also be unveiled on that day. Customers expect Samsung to avoid another disaster as the one with the Galaxy Note 7.

However, the information and the image of the new phone were leaked through a post that has been around in Twitter. It features the violet version of the Galaxy S8. Nonetheless, the photo doesn't offer a lot of insight, and the phone looks rather dull.

At the moments everything that has been said about the features of the Galaxy S8 is based on rumors. However, some have tried to predict the innovation of Samsung's 2017 flagship smartphone.

Apparently, the new Galaxy phone will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor in the U.S. and with Samsung's own Exynos 8895 for global versions. It will have a 4GB of RAM and 64 GB of onboard storage.

Features might include an iris scanner, a 12MP for main camera and 8MP for the front camera, wireless charging, and a microSD slot. The Galaxy S8 is expected to have a screen resolution of QHD (2560×1440) while the Galaxy S8+ will retain 3200×1800 (QHD+).

Both versions will lose their front-mounted home button. As well, they are expected to include IP68 dust/water resistance technology.

Nokia 6 clears durability test; probably one of the solid phones of 2017

     |   |   | Nokia 6 clears durability test; probably one of the solid phones of 2017

Nokia 6 is one of the solid phones of 2017.

    Updated: Saturday, March 18, 2017, 10:09 [IST]

Usually, smartphones aren't durable enough as the feature phones. When it comes to durable phones, Nokia is a legendary brand that is renowned for its indestructible offerings such as Nokia 3310 and 1100.

Though three phones were announced, the Nokia 6 made by HMD Global is the only smartphone from the company that has been released in select markets as yet. This smartphone has been crafted using 6000 series aluminum. The durability of this phone has been tested in the video by popular YouTube Channel JerryRigEverything. The video shows the smartphone subjected to different types of tests and still it is fine.

Also read: Nokia to release 'monthly' Android and security updates

The smartphone has survived durability tests such as bend, scratch and burn tests. It has left the reviewer astonished with its sold build. He finally concludes that the Nokia 6 is one of the most sold phones he has ever tested. Before knowing more details, we need to mention that you shouldn't attempt to try any of these tests with your phone.

Stay tuned to GizBot for more updates!

Nokia 6 is durable enough as the earlier models

Nokia 6 is a smartphone with a solid build as mentioned above. The scratch tests 3, 6 and 8 were conducted as shown in the video and it seems to be on par with the other flagship phones. The fingerprint scanner is scratch proof as in a few other handsets such as iPhone 7 and OnePlus 3. The front and rear camera sensors are also scratch resistant.

The display works fine after burn test!

The Nokia 6 was subjected to the burn test in the video. Its 5.5-inch FHD 1080p IPS display recovered the pixels that turned out black after subjecting a part of the display to flames. Once the heat is removed, the pixels appear back and the display works pretty well.

It survives the bend test too

Remember the iPhone 6 bendgate test? Well, the Nokia 6 proves to be strong. When it is bent in the video, the phone doesn't bend even to the slightest extent.

Nokia 6 – the solid phone of 2017

The reviewer concludes the video saying that the Nokia 6 is the most durable and solid phones of this year. Here's the video of the Nokia 6 durability test for you.

Best 2017 Android Phones: OnePlus 3T, Google Pixel, Huawei Mate 9, And More

There has never been quite a greater time for smartphone diversity than today, where the available gamut of feature-packed handsets range from fully spec'd, top-tier everything-you-need-plus-more devices; inexpensive but decent mid-range entries; and even budget phones that, while lacking the bells and whistles of higher-rank phones, still remain decent, passable, and functional.

Android primarily dominates the world's smartphone market today, with iOS trailing second. There are a plethora of choices available, which makes choosing the definitive Android phone this year an almost daunting task. Whether one wants a sleek, premium-looking phone, or a beefy powerhouse, the overall Android library is crowded with alluring choices that deciding which is "best" quickly descends into subjective territory.

That said, the best isn't always about what a phone's spec sheet offers, what gimmicky features it comes packing with, and what brand it hails from. So here's a definitive list of the greatest Android phones you can buy at this second — those that are great now, and will probably be great even a few years later.

    OnePlus 3T

    (Photo : OnePlus)

OnePlus, makers of highly competent but affordable smartphones which are regarded as cult hits among the broad smartphone arena, came out with the OnePlus 3T last year, a minor upgrade to the already powerful and feature-rich OnePlus 3.

The phone is packed with a whopping 6 GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor — a combination which pushes it past other phones in terms of power and performance. It also packs a bigger 3,400 mAh battery, 16-megapixel front and rear-facing cameras, dual-SIM card slots, and up to 128 GB of internal storage.

The OnePlus 3T is basically a OnePlus 3 jacked with a bit of steroids. It's available in Gunmetal and Soft Gold colorways. It's also one of the best Android phones out right now, and one of the cheapest, too, at $439, for its premium specs.

    Google Pixel

    (Photo : Google)

Released in late October, the Pixel and the Pixel XL, Google's first foray in self-branded flagship territory after dropping the Nexus template it had long used for proprietary handsets, is a marvelous smartphone with a vanilla Android experience. The first to ship with Google's Assistant baked into its software, both handsets were held in high regard upon release, particularly with its camera, which is touted as the best ever on a smartphone.

Under the hood of the Pixel and Pixel XL are the usual suspects: Snapdragon 821, 4 GB of RAM, high-capacity batteries, and up to 128 GB of internal storage. On the back is a 12.3-megapixel rear shooter and a fingerprint sensor. On the front is a 5-inch (Pixel), 5.5-inch (Pixel XL) AMOLED display, and an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter.

The design of both phones don't offer anything unique, but that's more of an industry limitation than Google's own fault, given that there's very little leeway with which to drastically alter the candybar form factor — long accepted as the standard smartphone design, phasing out flip, slide, and even twist phones of yesteryear.

All told, the Google Pixel and Pixel XL have easy sales pitches: if you want the best Android experience on a smartphone, get the one made by the software's creators. Case closed.

    Huawei Mate 9

    (Photo : Huawei)

Chinese manufacturer Huawei has performed quite well stateside, which is an impressive feat on its own given Samsung's and Apple's stake on the U.S. smartphone market. Its Mate 9, a powerful and sleek smartphone, is a testament to Huawei's U.S. inroads, helping it earn its "on-the-rise" profile.

The Mate 9 has a 5.9-inch display, a proprietary Kirin 960 processor, dual-SIM card slots, Leica-powered dual cameras, and pretty much premium specs. While its 1080p display leaves much to be desired, the Mate 9 is still a pretty powerful phone, greatly complemented by its high-capacity 4,000 mAh battery.

The Huawei Mate 9 is up there with top-rank smartphones, and users best cozy up with the smartphone should they want a different smartphone experience, but with up-to-speed features and specs.

    Motorola Moto Z

    (Photo : Motorola)

Lenovo-owned Motorola has done something truly unique with its flagship phones, one of which is the Moto Z, and that's thanks to its Moto Mods, module, or "clip-ons" that attach to the back panel of the phones that gift it extra functionality, such as extra power, high-fidelity speakers, and more.

Moto Mods, although highly experimental, rekindle the concept of the seemingly impossible notion of smartphone modularity. If the smartphone audience grows to find Moto Mods as something that should be standard for every smartphones moving forward, it's easy to imagine that that's where the innovation truly lies, and we have Motorola to thank if that happens.

The Moto Z comes with a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4 GB of RAM, up to 64 GB of internal memory, a 13-megapixel rear shooter, and a 5-megapixel front shooter. Its battery, however, is something of a bummer at only 2,600 mAh capacity. Still, it's one of the best Android smartphones out there.

    Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge

    (Photo : Samsung)

Since Samsung's ill-fated Note 7 has secluded itself in the smartphone hall of shame, we're turning instead to the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge, the company's extremely beautiful and powerful flagships at present.

In terms of specs, both the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge pack a punch. Both come with Quad HD displays: a curved 5.5-inch one for the S7 edge, and a 5.1-inch one for the base Galaxy S7 model. Both are equipped with a Snapdragon 820 chip, packed with 4 GB of RAM, have 12-megapixel rear-facing cameras and 5-megapixel front shooters, and can run the latest version of Android. It can't be stated enough just how great Samsung's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are. Sure, it packs a steep price point. But one can't go wrong by picking either of these two up.

Upcoming Android Phone: Samsung Galaxy S8

(Photo : Samsung Mobile | YouTube)

There's a running wealth of speculation for the Galaxy S8, and it is running wild. Helping the fanfare is a sort of "comeback" narrative for Samsung after suffering a string of failures caused by the nasty Note 7 explosion situation. But what's past is past, and Samsung holdouts are keen on the next Note 7 corrective: the Galaxy S8.

At this point, everything's a rumor. The only sure things are Samsung is set to unveil the enigmatic smartphone by March, and, as per its thickly veiled teaser, the phone will rework a traditional smartphone format. This self-heralded revolution seems to be rooted on the phone's screen, which appears has very minimal bezels.

Leaks purport the Galaxy S8 to have a Snapdragon 835 chip, come in two models, feature curved OLED displays, eschew the home button, feature a 12-megapixel rear shooter and an 8-megapixel front shooter, come in seven colors, and more. Rumors, of course, should be taken lightly, but the sheer impressiveness of the phone's alleged spec sheet at least suggests one thing: Samsung isn't messing around.

    Upcoming Android Phone: LG G6

    (Photo : LG Canada)

The LG G6, recently unveiled, does away with the promised but failed modularity of its predecessor, the G5, and instead offers a traditional, feature-packed premium smartphone with a wide aspect ratio for a screen that renders it a cut above the rest, a 5.7-inch Quad HD 18:9 display with rounded corners, to be exact.

Looking at its specs sheet — A Snapdragon 821 chip with Adreno 530 for graphics, 4 GB of RAM, dual 13-megapixel rear cameras and a 5-megapixel front-facing one, a fingerprint sensor, baked-in Google Assistant, and a 3,300 mAh battery with fast charging technology — one can safely surmise that instead of procuring experimentations, which could run the risk of mirroring the fate of the G5, LG went back to basics and created the most attractive phone it could create.

On top its premium specs, the LG G6 also offers either 32 or 64 GB of internal storage, runs on Nougat out of the box, and has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. LG has opted to eschew the myth that smartphones need gimmicks to stand out. It knew it just needed to create a simple, well-built phone with as-solid-as-it-can-get specs. One that makes the perplexed Android user never look elsewhere.

The LG G6 is rumored to hit stateside come spring, with an estimated price of about $795.

Hackers Can Now Use Sound Waves to Take Control of Your Smartphone

    Image: Univ. of Michigan

There's an old mantra in the security world that anything can be hacked. And the more complex our devices become, the more methods hackers dream up to break into them. Case in point: A team of researchers can use sound waves to control anything from a smartphone (seriously) to a car (theoretically).

The trick boils down to spoofing capacitive MEMS accelerometers, the chips that enable smartphones and Fitbits to know when they're in motion, where they're going, and how quickly. Using a small $5 speaker, researchers at the University of Michigan and the University of South Carolina blasted 20 different accelerometers from five manufacturers with sound waves from malicious music files. The resonant frequencies tricked the sensors in more than half of the accelerometers tested, enabling the researchers to do all sorts of stuff.

"It's like the opera singer who hits the note to break a wine glass, only in our case, we can spell out words [and send commands to a smartphone]" Kevin Fu, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Michigan told The New York Times. "You can think of it as a musical virus."

Image: Joseph Xu / Michigan Engineering

The sonic cyber attack actually works almost exactly how you'd think it would. Capacitive MEMS accelerometers contain a small amount of mass suspended on springs, and the sound waves nudge that piece of mass in such a way that the chip thinks it's in motion. The team explains exactly how the method works on a new website about the project.

The possibilities of this simple attack are nothing short of unnerving. Fu and his team used these sonic cyber attacks to trick smartphones into executing whatever command they wanted. The researchers show in a video how they can take over a smartphone app that controls a toy car using nothing but sound waves. They also spoofed a Fitbit into counting steps while the device remained perfectly still. The team gained so much control over the accelerometers that they could force a Samsung Galaxy S5 to spell out words in the chip's output signal.

The output signal spells "WALNUT." Can you see it? (Image: Joseph Xu / Michigan Engineering)

But that's only the beginning. With the right knowledge of how certain apps work, a malicious hacker could potentially take over a smartphone app with the right combination of sound waves.

"If a phone app used the accelerometer to start your car when you physically shake your phone, then you could intentionally spoof the accelerometer's output data to make the phone app think the phone is being shaken," Timothy Trippel, the lead author of a new paper on the WALNUT project and a PhD candidate at Michigan, told Gizmodo. "The phone app would then send the car a signal to start."

    Sponsored

Along these lines, it's important to highlight that these experiments were proof-of-concept exercises that exposed serious vulnerabilities in popular consumer hardware. Pwning a smartphone to drive a toy car isn't particularly dangerous, but the same kinds of accelerometer technology is used in real cars, drones, airplanes, medical devices, and other connected devices. The New York Times hinted at "darker possibilities" for a cyber attack like this, giving the example of how accelerometers in insulin pumps could be tricked into giving the wrong dosage. Just imagine the apocalyptic possibility of broadcasting a malicious music file over the radio that makes certain cars crash into each other on the highway. This is scary stuff.

"Thousands of everyday devices already contain tiny MEMS accelerometers," Fu said in a release. "Tomorrow's devices will aggressively rely on sensors to make automated decisions with kinetic consequences."

The researchers have shared their findings with the manufacturers of the vulnerable accelerometers. And accordingly, on Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security issued an alert about the hardware design flaws, detailing which chips were at risk and what can be done to mitigate the risk of a real-world attack. So if you ever questioned whether or not we're living in a very long, anxiety-ridden episode of Black Mirror, wonder no more. We are, and it's nuts.

Google, Levi’s smart jack will release this fall, to cost around $350

Home > News > Google, Levi's smart jack will release this fall, to cost around $350 The smart jacket is the first commercial product containing Google's ATAP division's Project Jacquard technology.

About two years ago, Google and Levi's announced their plans to work together on touch-sensitive clothing. And last year, the prototype of the connected smart jacket was showed off, but details like the launch date and price were still concealed. However, onstage the SXSW festival in Austin, the smart jacket got a price tag, and an estimated launch date as well.

Levi's global product innovation head Paul Dillinger and Advanced Technology and Projects Group's (ATAP) Project Jacquard lead Ivan Poupyrev held a discussion on the future of connectivity, where it was announced that the connected smart jacket would cost around $350 (Rs 23,000 approximately), which is also the first commercial product containing Google's ATAP division's Project Jacquard technology.

As for the launch, Levi's Commuter Trucker Jacket, as the product is called, during it first announcement at the Google I/O developer conference 2016 got a spring 2017 release date, that has now been pushed to the Fall 2017.

Essentially, the technology uses conductive fabric to turn a standard article of clothing into a connected device of sorts that can send instructions to your smartphone, like pausing or skipping a song that's playing by double tapping your wrist. In fact it works similarly to a smartwatch, just that it won't be as conspicuous, and coming from Levi's, we could expect it to gel with the daily fashion more easily. ALSO READ: This Rs 33,500 shirt changes color when exposed to pollution, but does it solve anything?

From what the earlier mentions have revealed so far, we know that the Commuter Trucker jacket is waterproof, except for a detachable electronic smart tag that activates a wireless connection between the clothing and a mobile device. It also houses a USB connecter in order for it to be charged (roughly every few days). The snap button on top of it has a haptic motor in it for vibration feedback and a subtle LED light that glows to notify or help direct the user on their travels. "If you get this thing dirty, you put it in the washing machine," Paul Dillinger had said during Google's annual developer conference in in 2016.

Lately, Google has been seeing taking its interest in wearables a little more seriously. In a very recent project, Google, together with fashion brand H&M's digital fashion house Ivyrevel, announced their efforts to make data fashionable. The two companies are together creating an Android app, which will create a 'Coded Couture' for a user based on their personal data. Essentially, with this app, the partnership aims to offer a technology that will create merchandise for users, based on their habits, needs and personality. ALSO READ: Google, Ivyrevel partner to create custom dresses based on your personal data

New Report Allegedly Reveals LG G6 U.S. Release Date

    By Oliver Haslam | March 12th, 2017

LG may have looked like it was in pole position to give its new G6 smartphone a healthy release window lead over the Samsung Galaxy S8, but according to a new report, that may not be the case in the United States at least.

Having been announced around a month ahead of when Samsung will announce its own flagship device, the LG G6 looks set to only arrive on American shores on April 7th. That's almost a month after the March 9th release the device had in Korea.

So how does all that tie in with the Samsung release? Rumors currently have Samsung getting the Galaxy S8 ready for sale in the United States towards the end of April, with both the 21st and 28th offered up by various reports. That means that while LG will indeed beat Samsung to the punch in the United States, the lead that it could have had over its rival is likely to be very much diminished.

LG is in a position of needing the G6 to be a hit following a disappointing performance by its predecessor, the G5. From what we have seen so far, the G6 is actually an excellent smartphone, and it packs some impressive numbers as well.

A large 5.7-inch "bezel-light" display, a Snapdragon 821, 4GB of RAM, IP68 water and dust resistance, and a 3,300mAh battery all sound like great things, but the Samsung offering will essentially match all that with the added bonus of a newer Snapdragon 835 chip beating at its heart.

Allegedly leaked render of Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S8 flagship

All this means that the earlier launch of the G6 could be vital to its chances of gaining a foothold in an ever more competitive market. The fact it appears to have lost a few weeks somewhere will be disappointing, though hopefully not terminal for the company's best smartphone in a while.

iOS 10.3 to release soon, backup all your data before updating – Here’s why

Apple's new iOS 10.3 update is going to arrive before the end of the month and while it is not a major update, there is one change that seems major for Apple internally as it changes the way file system works. Now, from the user's perspective, you will have to be cautious and have a proper backup taken before you hit the update button.

For almost every update, we keep talking that backups and safety of the data, but let's be frank. Most of the users don't care about a backup because once the installation of the update happened without any problem, so that might continue and there is nothing to worry. But, at least in the case of iOS 10.3, make sure you take a backup of the data.

    What's changing in iOS 10.3?

It was always the HFS+ as the file system used in not just the iOS devices but also the Mac ones. The very old file system doesn't do anything bad but Apple has decided to change that to the new Apple File System. The approach is not bad as the Apple File System carries a few good features including optimization for SSDs, Strong Encryption, Better time stamping for the files, and there are improvements to some other storage options for the files.

It isn't only the iOS but in the coming time, the file system in MacOS, tvOS and even watchOS will be updated to the Apple File System.

Now, here's why we recommend you to backup the data on your phone – Incompatibility of the two file systems with each other. While Apple will have it worked and do a smooth transition from HFS+ to the Apple File System but the thing is, it is an irreversible one so if in case the process gets an issue, there is no way you would be able to recover the data unless you had taken a backup.

Given the way Apple does the update process very well most of the time, you would usually not need to worry. But the file system change can go haywire, and even if Apple has a good process set up for that, it is a very strong suggestion to take a backup of the iPhone data.

How to take a backup of iOS device

Using iTunes – This is the best way as backing up with this method would help in the easy recovery of the data later. When you connect your device to the computer and then open Apple iTunes, you will see the section for that device and then click on "Back Up Now". Encrypt the backup by setting up a password.

Using iCloud Backup – This is not a free option as we're sure that long-term users of the iPhone will have a large data to backup and iCloud allows only about 5GB backup for free. If you are ready to pay, you can buy the storages with capacities of 50GB, 200GB, 1TB, or 2TB for different prices, but the problem here would be that you have to stay online and have a good connectivity for the update to happen.

Number One Smartphone Vendor for the First Time Since 2012

IDC New Zealand: Apple, Number One Smartphone Vendor for the First Time Since 2012

AUCKLAND, 10th March 2017: Apple shipped the highest number of smartphones over the holiday season, according to IDC's recently published fourth quarter smartphone shipment results, tracked from October to December 2016.

Apple have not held the number one position since the first quarter of 2012.

Vendors shipped a record high volume of 672,000 smartphones during October to December 2016, up from 614,000 smartphones shipped over the same period in in 2015. The top three vendors made up close to 80% of these shipments. Apple shipped 221,000 smartphones, Samsung fell to the number two position with 176,000 smartphone shipments, and Huawei closed the number three gap significantly reaching 143,000 smartphone shipments.

Chayse Gorton, Client Device Analyst for IDC New Zealand, believes there are three key reasons contributing to Apples fourth quarter performance in the market.

Apple overcame stock constraints observed after the release of the iPhone 7 models late in the fourth quarter. Gorton says, "even with some consumers expected to be holding off upgrading their smartphone until the release of the 10th anniversary edition iPhone, forecasted in late 2017, the demand for iPhone 7 has been stronger than anticipated".

Despite looking somewhat similar to the iPhone 6s, updated specifications were enough to entice many consumers to upgrade their Apple smartphone. Gorton suggests, "it's hard to say with confidence that a single feature drove customers to upgrade, such as increased durability", rather he suggests "it is likely a combination of improvements leading to consumers perceiving the iPhone 7 models as superior".

Publicity issues relating to competing vendors enticed a portion of consumers to make the switch to Apple. Samsung's battery cell issues in its recently released Note 7 smartphones, and the subsequent recall, not only led the devices to be excluded from IDC's tracker, but also to some consumers to question their loyalty to the vendor.

2016 was an exciting year, with the overall smartphone market growing 10% year on year, and despite fourth quarter vendor rankings, Samsung holding off Apple to retain the number one position for the year. Overall for 2016, Samsung held 32% share, Apple held 27% share, and Huawei held 14% share.

With Apple successfully winning a quarter for the first time in close to five years, and Huawei closing the gap in third place, it is safe to say the smartphone vendor battleground is shaping up for an interesting year.

What Does WikiLeaks Release of CIA Hacking Tools Mean for You?

At first glance, the latest release of classified information from the news leak organization WikiLeaks seems to have alarming implications for anyone with an electronic device. The 8,761 documents and files reveal details about Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) hacking tools aimed at vehicle control systems, Samsung smart TVs, iPhones, Android devices as well as Windows, Linux and other machines.

However, a number of IT security experts are cautioning that the information released yesterday does not indicate the CIA has found a way to break the encryption of secure messaging tools or is conducting mass surveillance of people via their TVs and smartphones.

It's also unclear where exactly the cache of documents WikiLeaks is calling "Vault 7" comes from, so it's too early to attribute this leak to an inside agency whistleblower, an outside hacker or a state actor, according to these experts.

In addition, while the leak does reveal the CIA's use of so-called "zero-day" vulnerabilities that haven't yet been discovered or disclosed by software developers, at least some of those vulnerabilities appear to be several years old, which means they may have already been patched or eliminated.

    'Genuinely a Big Deal'

Shortly after WikiLeaks announced the Vault 7 release yesterday, former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor and whistleblower Edward Snowden said on Twitter that the leaked documents appear to be legitimate.

"Still working through the publication, but what @Wikileaks has here is genuinely a big deal," tweeted Snowden. "Looks authentic." In 2013, Snowden shared thousands of classified documents with journalists to reveal the widespread extent of intelligence surveillance on U.S. citizens as well as non-citizens.

"There's a lot in here," cybersecurity expert Bruce Schneier wrote yesterday in an analysis on his blog. "The documents say that the CIA -- and other intelligence services -- can bypass Signal, WhatsApp and Telegram. It seems to be by hacking the end-user devices and grabbing the traffic before and after encryption, not by breaking the encryption."

Many of the hacking tools described were redacted by WikiLeaks, which said it was still examining those and might release them later, noted Schneier, who is chief technology officer at Resilient and a fellow on Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. "Hopefully we'll get them eventually," he said.

The documents released by WikiLeaks so far don't indicate the CIA can remotely infect and spy on anyone's smartphones or television sets, U.K.-based security analyst Graham Cluley said in a blog post today. Rather, the leaks show the agency can surveil conversations only if it has first been able to gain physical access to a device to install the proper malware.

"If you're worried about the prospect of an intelligence agency breaking into your home in order to plug a malicious USB stick into the back of your Samsung Smart TV then I'd argue you probably should also be worrying that intelligence agencies are breaking into your house full stop," Cluley said.

    WikiLeaks: 'More to Come'

Given the volume of information released, which reportedly spans a period from 2013 to 2016, security researchers and others will undoubtedly spend weeks and months analyzing the documents and files made public by WikiLeaks. The organization also indicated that yesterday's leak was just the first of a series it planned to put out.

While WikiLeaks did not give any clues about who provided the Vault 7 data, it noted its source(s) released the information to detail "policy questions that they say urgently need to be debated in public, including whether the CIA's hacking capabilities exceed its mandated powers and the problem of public oversight of the agency. The source wishes to initiate a public debate about the security, creation, use, proliferation and democratic control of cyberweapons."

Like other security experts, Robert Graham, CEO of Errata Security, said yesterday that the WikiLeaks revelations don't point to new threats of mass hacking of citizens by the CIA.

"Snowden revealed how the NSA was surveilling all Americans," Graham said. "Nothing like that appears in the CIA dump. It's all legitimate spy stuff (assuming you think spying on foreign adversaries is legitimate)."

They need 'physical access to the device'? Are you saying if the CIA (or anyone, for that matter) was able to hack into your device remotely (by, say, hacking a device connected to an unsecured WiFi network) that they wouldn't be able to install malware to read messages sent via Whatsapp or Telegram? I find that hard to believe. But then again, I'm a bit of a novice so I'm not sure. Can someone explain please?

WikiLeaks outs CIA for turning smartphones, TVs into spy cameras and audio bugs

WikiLeaks published thousands of purported CIA documents Tuesday that claim to show intimate details of the agency's cyberespionage effort, including malware that turns iPhones, Android cell phones and Samsung smart TVs into bugs and spy cams.

The release comprises 8,761 documents and files from an isolated, high-security network situated inside the CIA's Center for Cyber Intelligence in Langley, Virginia, according to WikiLeaks.

The documents include information about a CIA cyber intelligence outpost in the U.S. consulate in Frankfurt, Germany, that gave the cyber spies access throughout the European Union.

The documents could not immediately be authenticated. But a cybersecurity expert, Rendition Infosec founder Jake Williams, told The Associated Press that the dump appeared legitimate.

The documents detail some of the roughly 500 projects from the CIA's Engineering Development Group (EDG), the majority of which consists of tools used for penetration, infestation or implanting, control and exfiltration from computer systems.

The CIA's "Weeping Angel" spyware attack on Samsung smart TVs, which was developed in cooperation with the United Kingdom's MI5, places target TVs in a "Fake-Off" mode and then operates the TV as a listening device. The recorded conversations are then transmitted over the Internet to a covert CIA server, according to the documents.

The data also revealed a CIA project in 2014 that attempted to infect vehicle-control systems used by modern cars and truck. The purpose of the cyberattack was not specified, but it would potentially give the CIA control over operation of vehicles.

WikiLeaks speculated the agency could use the hack to "engage in nearly undetectable assassinations."

WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange said the document dump, which he dubbed "Year Zero," revealed the extent of U.S. cyberespionage and the risk proliferation this unchecked technology posed to the world.

"There is an extreme proliferation risk in the development of cyber 'weapons.' Comparisons can be drawn between the uncontrolled proliferation of such 'weapons,' which results from the inability to contain them combined with their high market value, and the global arms trade," he said in a statement. "But the significance of "Year Zero" goes well beyond the choice between cyberwar and cyberpeace. The disclosure is also exceptional from a political, legal and forensic perspective."

WikiLeaks said that it carefully reviewed the "Year Zero" disclosure and published substantive CIA documentation while avoiding the distribution of "armed" cyberweapons, awaiting a consensus on the technical and political nature of the CIA's program and how such "weapons" should be analyzed, disarmed and published.

WikiLeaks also redacted and rendered anonymous some identifying information in "Year Zero" documents. The redactions include ten of thousands of CIA targets and attack machines throughout Latin America, Europe and the United States, according to WikiLeaks.

The "Year Zero" dump eclipsed the total number of pages published over the first three years of information from NSA leaker Edward Snowden.
