Pokemon Go releases to smartphones next month

Pokemon Go releases to smartphones next month Pokemon Go Plus allows wearers to play without taking out their smartphones.

Augmented reality game Pokemon Go will release to smartphones in July, Nintendo announced via its E3 livestream today.

Developed by Game Freak and Niantic Labs, Pokemon Go uses AR technology and smartphone cameras to allow players to find, photograph, and capture Pokemon in their physical surroundings.

Players will gain experience and level up as they capture Pokemon, allowing them to battle and capture stronger and rarer Pokemon.

Legendary Pokemon will also be available for capture through events hosted in different cities, while set locations called PokeStops will allow players to stock up on Poke Balls, berries, and Pokemon eggs.

A paid version of the game, Pokemon Go Plus, will include a wearable hardware accessory that, when paired with smartphones, vibrates when a Pokemon is nearby, allowing players to attempt a capture by pressing a hardware button.

While Nintendo has confirmed it is developing a Pokemon-trading feature, it will not be available at the game's release.

The game will also be compatible with future Pokemon titles, although to what extent remains unclear.

Pokemon Go will be free when it releases next month to iOS and Android, while Pokemon Go Plus will cost US$34.99.
