LG V20 smartphone to offer upgraded sound with 32-bit Quad DAC

The upcoming LG V20 smartphone, the latest flagship model of South Korean tech company LG Electronics Inc., will feature a cutting-edge sound system in collaboration with U.S based audio chipmaker ESS Technology.

LG Electronics on Thursday announced that the LG V20, which is scheduled for release on September 7, will be equipped with a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC chip by ESS Technology to provide an optimum sound experience to its smartphone users.

The DAC or digital to analog converter is a chip that switches sound sources that are composed of digital signals such as 0 and 1 to analog signals that human can hear. The Quad DAC is four DAC chips in one single audio chip and it allows the audio system to better play 32-bit sound by reducing ambient noise. With 32-bit Quad DAC, sound is delivered that is closest to a live performance, the company said. The smartphone maker's s precedent model LG V10 was also equipped with 32-bit single DAC but it did not offer 32-bit music generatio n.

Sound experts say an audio system equipped with Quad DAC delivers sound very clearly that it is even possible to hear the breathing of a singer and noise of bow touching a string of a violin. The Quad DAC is embedded in some of the premium audio players released by high quality music equipment makers such as McIntosh and Yamaha, and a McIntosh's compact disc (CD) player with Qaud DAC is priced at over 1,000 British pounds ($1,300). Previously, Korean electronics company Iriver Inc. launched a high performance MP3 player with double DAC.

"Quad DAC on the V20 will make users feel as if they are carrying around a professional home-audio system on their smartphone," said Robert Blair, president and chief executive officer of ESS Technology.

LG Electronics has focused its efforts to upgrade the audio and video features of its smartphones, beginning with the LG V10 that was launched last year. Juno Cho, president of Mobile Communications division of LG Electroni cs said that the company will continue working with industry leaders such as ESS Technology to bring the "best in class audio" to its mobile phone users as he added that the LG V20 phone is also equipped with upgraded multimedia features.
