Google releases Android N preview for developers

Features available in the developer preview include multi-window, allowing split-screen modes on phones and tablets, displaying more than one app at the same time, running two apps side-by-side or one-above-the-other.

Google normally starts talking about the next Android release at its Google IO developer show; this year's rendition happens in late May. The idea is to give them more time to incorporate developer feedback and ultimately, ship the final release to device makers this summer.

Conveniently, Google today also launched the Android Beta Program, which will allow developers to install preview builds of Android N directly to their devices over the air.

The Android N Developer preview was not supposed to launch yet, or at least that's what you would say normally as Google tends to release its developer preview after it's held its major IO developer conference.

For instance, now the Android system will support direct reply to help users q uickly respond to an SMS or text message directly within the notification interface.

Multiple notifications from the same app can be grouped together using this feature. Historically, Android tablets haven't been a great idea for people wanting to remain productive on the go, in part because it has been impossible to truly multitask between apps. Just keep in mind that these builds are meant for developers to test their apps on and not for use as daily drivers, so don't be surprised if you run into some wonkiness while using the Android N Developer Preview.

So, what's new in Android N? This most welcome improvement allows users to reply to notifications from virtually any app without having to close the shade first, or open an app to view them.

The next set of Nexus devices are also expected to feature Google's Android N operating system (OS).

Google's upcoming Android 6.1 or 7.0 "N" update (we're guessing it will be called Nutella) will be released so metime this summer. Android Police believes that it only applies to the 64GB version, but Google's announcement wasn't clear on that.

So far this impressive new Android N feature (one we've seen on Samsung devices) appears to work pretty good already, and with all apps, no restrictions at all. Remember, this is a developer preview, so there will be bugs.

Google has traditionally named new versions of the operating system after sweet treats, as was the case with Lollipop and Marshmallow.

Developers who own a recently released Nexus brand device now have a much easier way to get the next iteration of Android downloaded and made available for testing their future games with.
