Microsoft Surface Phone release date news and updates: New phone to now arrive in 2017, specs, features

Washington: Microsoft is likely to unveil the Surface Phone in early 2017, says a report from Windows Central, which quotes sources close to the project.

If the report is true, the Redmond, Washington-based company's new smartphone will be seen in the next calendar year. There aren't many hardware particulars, but it has been suggested Surface Phone could feature an Intel processor and run x86 apps.

The Windows Central report alleges the variants could be created for consumer, business, and "prosumer," or enthusiast, markets. There were no other details on pricing or features that would differentiate each phone.

The phone will most probably come with Windows 10 features like Windows Hello and Continuum, and it wouldn't be surprising if the company included a stylus compatible with the new Windows Ink feature arriving in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

After the failure of 950 and 950 XL, one might think that Microsoft would withdraw from the mobile business but it continued to come up with updated builds of its Windows 10 Mobile operating system. It even began upgrading legacy handsets to Windows 10 in March 2016 indicating the OS is ready for rollout.

Several businesses outside Microsoft are taking up Windows 10 Mobile. As Panay and the Surface team continue to develop Surface Phone, more OEMs have begun launching smartphones running Windows 10. For example HP and its new Elite x3, a high-end smartphone designed for business users.
