Rogers and Fido Will Carry the Huawei GR5

We always look forward to a new smartphone release in Canada, even if it is more of a midrange device regarding specifications.  Unfortunately, we will not see the new Huawei P9 finding its way to Canada, but we will eventually see the Huawei GR5, which features the same specs as the Honor 5X, thanks to Rogers and Fido.  The device, announced in January 2016 and released in February, has no firm date of arrival or pricing.

Huawei claims their new GR5 is for the "Fun-Seeker."  It is your typical Huawei device – which means a well-designed smartphone that gives you some bang for your buck.  Even with the GR5's mid-specs, you still get an all-metal aluminum/magnesium alloy body that looks the part of a more premium device.  The unique rear-mounted fingerprint sensor acts as a multifunctional interactive touch sensor.  With a single tap, you can unlock the phone, take a photo, or answer a phone call.  The Huawei GR5 sports a 5.5-inch Full HD (FHD) IPS LCD display, with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and 401 pixels per inch (PPI).  The GR5's smart light sensor detects changes in light and its Apical Assertive Display automatically adjusts the dynamics.

The Huawei GR5 uses a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 MSM8939v2 octa-core processor with four cores clocked at 1.2GHz and four cores clocked at 1.5GHz and uses an Adreno 405 GPU.  It packs 2GB of DDR3 RAM and 16GB of internal memory that is expandable via a microSD card.  The primary camera is 13MP with autofocus, an aperture of f/2.0, and LED flash.  It uses digital image stabilization, digital zoom, HDR, scene mode, and many more features.  The front facing camera (FFC) is 5MP for shooting selfies and video chatting. The Huawei GR5 has the usual suspects – WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, NFC, and built-in FM radio.  A 3000mAh non-removable battery provides power.  It has speakers mounted at the bottom of the device.  It measures 151.3 x 76.3 x 8.15 mm and weighs in at 158 grams.   It comes in White, Gray, or Silver.

As more information comes in, we will keep you updated on availability and pricing of the Huawei GR5 as it makes its way to Rogers and Fido.  The GR5 is certainly not your typical mid-range – we hope that pricing will be kind.
