Acer has been dabbling with the idea of gaming-oriented mobile devices for some time now, and as yet the company's main response to this particular market segment (if we can consider it a fully-fledged segment) is the Acer Predator 8 gaming tablet (pictured above) released in November last year. But interestingly enough, according to a new report citing the president of Acer Smart Product Business Group, Acer is now planning to release a new gaming-oriented smartphone, which will apparently see the light of day sometime in the fourth quarter of the year at the latest.
Last month was an interesting month for Acer fans, as the company unveiled a variety of new products, including a Chromebook, a handful of "Predator" products aimed at PC gamers, and a new smartphone with a generous 5,000 mAh battery, called the Acer Liquid Zest Plus. Now according to a fresh report citing S.T. Liew, the president of Acer Smart Product Business Group, Acer intends to release a new gaming smartphone in Q4 2016 at the latest. Reportedly, the smartphone will support Acer's cloud services, and will be released along with a price tag of US$499-599. It's worth noting that Acer already unveiled the Predator 6 smartphone last year, but the handset has yet to see the light of day. The Acer Predator 6 was supposed to make use of a MediaTek Helio X20 SoC, a Mali-T880 MP4 graphics chip, 4 GB of RAM, and of course, a 6-inch display. Whether or not any of these characteristics will be translated over to the upcoming gaming smartphone is unknown. It is also unclear if t he aforementioned device will be known by the "Predator" moniker, but since this is a brand used by Acer to label its gaming-oriented products regardless of their nature, it's likely that the mysterious smartphone will follow the same naming scheme.
Once again, according to the report, S.T. Liew claims that the upcoming Acer gaming smartphone will be available for purchase for US$499-599. This should push the terminal into the high-end market, but no hardware specifications have been revealed so far. However, Liew did reveal that Acer is now working on improving various aspects of the phone, including software, battery life, and heat dissipation.
