2017 flagship to release with 4K display

However, to implement the same in a smartphone is the next big step, and Samsung is already heading there.

Sources close to the company, which has codenamed its developments "Project Valley", say that Samsung may release a phone that can fold in half, like a makeup compact.

The phones are expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February 2017.

There has been much talk about the Samsung Galaxy S8 featuring a 4K ultra-high definition display screen when it is released.

Foldable screens are no surprise to those who have been following the markets of technology these days, as many companies have been working on that and LG actually showed it off earlier this year. Many VR headsets, including the Samsung Gear VR, need to be paired with smartphones.

Samsung's foldable smartphone has been seen in the rumor mills for so long that some believe the device is just a figment of one's imagination.

Another device will have a 5-inch display when used as a handset but will unfold into a display "that's as large as 8 inches", according to the report. WiGig has a range of only about 4 meters, or 12 feet but it at least creates a viable means of delivering 4K content straight to a smartphone with the correct display type. Models in the S and Note lines feature screens that stretch over the edge of the device, a concept unique to the company.

There have been several rumors about Samsung creating a foldable smartphone over the years, but until now, a prototype or an actual device has never been announced or released by the company.

Other more tentative speculation about the S8 includes mention of a bendable screen but this last is what we'd definitely call a skepticism-worthy suggestion.

Responding to queries, a leading news network based in the USA confirmed the availability of Galaxy X in early 2017 with its possible launch during the Mobile World Congress. But if Samsung's devices succeed, they could prove to be "killers" on the market, Raupp said.
