Not to worry if you drop your smartphone! Gorilla Glass 5 Is On The Way

Corning incorporated, the manufacturers behind toughened glass for Smartphones 'Gorilla Glass', revealed its next release Gorilla Glass 5 on Wednesday, July 20. The Gorilla Glass 5 is said to be of next- gen technology and is the toughest glass developed by Corning till date. According to their lab tests, Gorilla Glass 5 can survive a 5.2-foot drop (1.6 meters) 80% of the time on an average, which is quite impressive.

In an interview given to Techcrunch senior vice president of Corning Jim Steiner revealed that the new Gorilla Glass 5 performs 1.8 times better than Gorilla Glass 4.

Gorilla Glass 4, Corning's last iteration, was released in November 2014 and also generated some major news with its drop resistance technology and gorilla_glassscratch proof glass. Apple's iPhone has also used Gorilla Glass in the past, and the upcoming iPhone 7 is also speculated to be using Gorilla Glass 5.

As per Corning's recent study, more than 85% people drop their Smartphones at least once per year, and over 55% have dropped it more than 3 or 4 times. With the recent selfie craze, Many bizarre vine videos of people dropping their Smartphones, breaking or scratching them got a lot of buzz on the internet. Gorilla Glass 5 is expected to be released later this year.

John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass commented, "With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning's advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses."

"With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement," he added.

With the much-anticipated release of Apples's iPhone 7, and now the rumors of it including Gorilla Glass 5 social media is going berserk.
