OnePlus 4: Release date, UK price, news and rumours of the iPhone-baiting smartphone contender

A few years ago, you might not have heard of the Chinese manufacturer OnePlus.

Not anymore. The company is on its third smartphone cycle and has consistently released excellent iPhone-rivalling handsets at wallet-friendly prices.

The OnePlus 3T is the company's most recent product . It's a 5.5-inch smartphone with a Snapdragon 821 processor and 6GB of RAM. And, at £339, it's half the price of the iPhone 7 or the Google Pixel.

But despite the 3T being unveiled only a few months ago, it was definitely an iterative update rather than a full-blown new product.

The new phone is believed to be coming later this year - with many internet rumours already circulating of a OnePlus 4, including from YouTuber Concept creator.

Here's what we know so far about it.

Development of the new OnePlus phone looks to be underway according to a tweet from Evan Blass.

Blass has a great track record when it comes to new smartphones and he recently tweeted an image believed to be the homescreen of the next OnePlus phone.

We've no idea what to make of this - other than OnePlus is obviously continuing with its "Never Settle" mantra.

Release date

Looking back at the release dates for previous OnePlus phones gives us an idea of when to expect from the OnePlus 4.

The OnePlus One was launched back in April 2014, followed by the OnePlus 2 in July 2015 and the OnePlus 3 in June 2016.

It's unlikely OnePlus will be able to squeeze out a phone in the next month, so we can probably expect it to drop in either June or July 2017. Just in time for some luxurious sun-soaked summer selfies.

Price

Price has made OnePlus the success it is. Being able to offer less affluent customers the same specs as their iPhone-toting friends has won the Chinese brand legions of fans.

However, the more recent handsets have seen a bump in price - most notably due to the UK's decision to leave the EU.

It's unlikely that the OnePlus 4 will come out with the same £600+ price tag that adorns the Samsung Galaxy S8 or the iPhone 7.

Best guess is that the OnePlus 4 will probably arrive with a £400/£450 price point and the current OnePlus 3T will be downgraded to £350.

Specs

Smartphones have followed predictable upgrade cycles for a few years now, so predicting the innards of the OnePlus 4 isn't too tricky.

In fact, a website has been set up solely devoted to the new phone. Those behind OnePlus4.net claim to have been given detailed information on what's under the new phone's bonnet.

They claim it will feature 8GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 830 processor with the same 5.5-inch Full HD display and 64GB of on-board storage.

Meanwhile, the battery could be a massive 4,000mAh power pack that supports the company's much-publicised "Dash Charge" feature.

For those unaware, the Dash Charge concept transplants much of the charging mojo from the phone itself to the adapter. That allows it to regulate temperature and energy flow. The result is, in OnePlus' words, "a day's power in half an hour".

The fast charging technology has been a big deal for OnePlus over the last year and we don't expect any different from the OnePlus 4.

Other rumours are sure to circulate about the phone as its official unveiling draws closer. We'll keep this article updated with all the recent OnePlus 4 news, so remember to keep checking back.
