Android O Release Date Expected In August Ahead Of Pixel Smartphones Updates

Google's upcoming Android O software could release in early August, according to David Ruddock of Android Police. The blogger shared on Twitter Wednesday that the new operating system could launch during the first or second week of August, detailing that roll out could take place earlier than the release of Android 7.0 Nougat.

Google showcased several aspects of Android O at its I/O Conference in May. Among highlighted features includes faster roll outs, battery improvements, faster boot times, updated emoji, smart text selection, picture-in-pictures, updates to the home screen and the night light feature, and a new initiative called Android Go, which brings features of the new system to low-end Android devices.

Additionally, Google announced that Kotlin will now be an official Android programming language. Other Google announcements included Google Lens, Google Assistant for iPhone, Daydream 2.0, a standalone VR headset, updates to Google Photos, Google Home, Daydream and Tango, among others.

Currently, Android O is in public beta. The final beta will hit Google devices in July before the official release during the third quarter.

Android O has not been officially named; however, there have been indications, within Google code, which suggested the version number will be Android 8.0. Several hints suggest the Android O codename might be Oreo. Google even teased the name by offering Oreos packets as snacks during Google I/O. However, many consider that the tech giant could be attempting to hide the real name of Android O.

Several smartphones have already been confirmed for Android O updates, including the OnePlus 3 and 3T and the Nokia 6.

Google's second generation Pixel smartphones are expected to release after the Android O roll out, likely sometime in October. Rumors suggest Google may announce three Pixel smartphones, which may all run the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip. They will be the first devices to officially run Android O.

New Microsoft update is bricking smartphones

Typically, being a member of an insiders program is a good thing. As an insider, most likely you will be able to experience new items before the public can. Sometimes, there's also a chance to receive exclusive deals that non-members will never know about.

Microsoft offers a program like this, it's called the Windows Insider Program. Unfortunately for some of its members, an update just went horribly wrong!

How a Windows Insider update went south

The Windows Insider Program is an optional service provided by Microsoft to let users experience the next version of Windows before public release. The program targets early adopters and the 'enthusiast' crowd who enjoy beta testing new software.

What's happening now is, Microsoft recently released a flawed update to insiders by mistake. The update is forcing Windows smartphone users into a never-ending reboot loop, essentially 'bricking' their gadget. The following message appears on affected Windows smartphones:

In a blog post regarding this incident, Microsoft said, "If you received this build (from RS_IoT) on Mobile: This build will *not* install on your device. If you installed this build, your device will be stuck in a reboot loop and the only way to recover is to use the Windows Device Recovery Tool and re-flash. After re-flashing, you can join the Windows Insider Program again on your device and choose your ring and be back on the right update path."

How to fix flawed Windows update

Microsoft gave instructions for users on how to fix this issue. Follow these steps:

"If your device has downloaded this build but has not installed the build (you see either an 'install' or 'Restart now' button under Phone update) - you will have to do a device reset via Settings >> System >> About (Do a backup via Settings >> Update & security >> Backup FIRST) and then check your Windows Insider Program settings to ensure you're on the right ring.

"If you are not a Windows Insider, your device may have seen one of these builds offered. However, these builds will not install on devices that are not joined to the Windows Insider Program."

This update was also sent by mistake to Windows Insiders for PC, although it doesn't seem to be as critical of a mistake for them. The company said this build may include issues that impact PC usability, more so than normal builds.

The user can either wait for Microsoft to publish a newer build or roll-back to the previous build via Settings >> Update & security >> Recovery.

Note: Users have up to 10 days to roll-back and will only work if they did not do Disk Cleanup to remove the previous Windows installation.

HMD Global is likely to launch Nokia 3, 5 and 6 smartphone in the country. The company has sent across an invite scheduled for June 13. Media speculates that it will announce the launch of much anticipated Nokia smartphones: Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3.

Nokia had recently launched a feature phone in India, Nokia 3310. The tough built and stellar battery life of this nostalgia inducing phone is a feature worth noting.

Nokia recently confirmed that the smartphones, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3, will get the Android O update as soon as Google announces its new release.

Android O Confirmed For All Nokia Smartphones Launched Earlier This Year

Nokia announced three Android-powered handsets at this year's Mobile World Congress event in February. These devices — the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 — are set to make their market debut in the U.S. by end June.

The three smartphones are also in line to benefit from the Android O update. It is worth noting that Nokia 6 is already available in a few Asian countries and it runs on Android 7 Nougat.

Upcoming Nokia Handsets To Get Android O Update?

The Nokia smartphones will come with Android Nougat OS on launch, but a spokesperson for HMD Global confirmed that all the upcoming handsets will also receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update when Google decides to launch it.

"The smartphones will get the Android O update once the new release is available from Google for their OEM partners, the same way HMD Global is committed to the monthly Android security updates," the spokesperson revealed.

However, the Android O platform, which was revealed at Google's I/O event in 2017, is slated to release sometime in the third quarter of the year. So, the Alphabet-owned company will officially release the next-gen OS around September or October. It is unlikely that it will roll out to the three Nokia handsets immediately.

It usually takes a couple of months for an Android update to reach unlocked smartphones. The updates take even longer to reach carrier-bound devices, which indicates that the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 handsets will not get the Android O update before December.

However, the fact that HMD has confirmed that the update would be supported for these handsets will delight most fans. Moreover, the upcoming smartphones will start retailing with the stock Android Nougat version installed, which should make the subsequent upgrade to the newer Android OS easier for users.

What Will Android O Bring?

The successor to the highly successful Android Nougat, the Android O or Android Oreo, will feature several improvements over the last version. One of the features which will be added to Android devices through the new OS is the inclusion of Autofill password support. People using password managers would be able to pick one program, which would allow it to autofill the password for all of the users' accounts.

Android O promises to also bring significant improvements to the device's battery life by limiting the functions taking place in the background.

Google also said that it will implement better shortcuts for the device's lock screen, which means that users will be able to customize the lock display to navigate more of their apps.

These are just some of the features of the Android O, which is scheduled to be released later in 2017. With these features in tow, the Nokia devices will perhaps be among the first smartphones to get the Android O update.

Not everyone wants a phone that's laden down with bells and whistles. Some of us simple want something we can call, text and maybe check the weather or our email now and then. Or maybe your current phone is on death's doorstep but you really want to save your money for the next iPhone. Seems silly to spend $600+ in either case.

While we have yet to test the 5th generation Moto G Plus, we've reviewed previous iterations of Moto smartphones and found them to be perfectly functional and, though far from the best available, they're good for the price. Here's what we know about the G5 Plus:

PROS

The Moto G5 Plus runs on the latest version of Google Android (Nougat), and it's unlocked and compatible with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

Plus, for $185, you get 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage on the phone, and there's a MicroSD reader to easily expand your storage. The top-rated 32GB MicroSD card is only $13 on Amazon, so it's easy and cheap to get more storage,

The 64GB model, which is also on sale for $229.99 for Prime members ($299.99 usually), has twice the RAM if you want improved phone speed. But if you don't care about speed, the 32GB model is the better deal.

The G5 plus also has a fingerprint reader for added security, a large 1080p display, and an FM tuner built in so you can listen to music without eating up your data.

CONS

There are ads on the lock screen and Amazon apps pre-loaded onto the phone to offset the lower cost. But you can pay the extra $50ish any time down the line to remove them if they really bother you.

The phone has a 12MP camera, but don't expect it to deliver high-quality photos like higher-end smartphones. The hardware simply isn't as cutting edge as what Samsung and Apple are using.

It's also not as fast as other, more expensive phones. Your email might take longer to sync. Photos might not send as quickly in texts, and you might not be able to stream Netflix outside of WiFi.

Is this the right phone for you?

All that being said, this phone might be perfect if you (or someone you know) falls into any of these categories:

Clumsy and constantly breaking and replacing phones

First-time smartphone owner (e.g. your teenager)

Fine with a phone that's "good enough"

Saving up for the new iPhone or the Samsung S8

Need something now that won't break the bank
