LG Pulls Out the Smoke and Mirrors Before Release of the V30 Smartphone

The smartphone industry is highly competitive and the new LG V30 is one of the biggest devices to be announced this year, so it's no surprise they worked hard to keep the specs under wraps. But LG went above and beyond using a new method to hide important information, just in case anyone got their hands on one.

While it's no surprise that smoke and mirrors play a huge role in the release of any major electronic product these days, smartphone manufacturers are especially sneaky. Which makes sense, not only do they contain technology and innovation from so many different fields, they're also constantly updating and trying to outdo each other. Before going public with these new contributions, each manufacturer is tasked with keeping that information secret, and is far more difficult than you might imagine.

LG apparently has doubled down on that information security. While they did announce the release of the LG V30 without any major leaks about its updated f/1.6 camera, we now can see, at least partially, how they did it.

Before unveiling a new product, LG Electronics safeguards confidential and proprietary device information by masking the true values of important product specifications. Some preproduction preview sample devices recently distributed featured non-final software, which maintained masked information with regard to aperture. The LG V30 features an F1.6 aperture camera and glass lens, an industry leading innovation.

Maybe messing with the internal software of their pre-release models isn't James Bond-level misinformation and subterfuge, but it highlights how powerful our thirst for information is. An addiction so great that LG decided to program its software to create false EXIF data. Going forward, I imagine this type of activity will only become more common. Trust no one — not the EXIF data, either.

Sources claim, the LG V30 will be available for approximately $700.

Fujitsu Technology Enables Smartphone Support for Japan Marine Recreation Association's Boat Rescue Service

Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan, September 05, 2017

The Japan Marine Recreation Association (JMRA) and Fujitsu Limited today announced the deployment of a cloud-based emergency position reporting system developed by Fujitsu for JMRA's pleasure boat rescue service, the Boat Assistance Network (BAN). The service will be offered beginning in the fall of 2017.

When pleasure boats run into mechanical problems or other difficulties, owners can simply access the online emergency position reporting system from their smartphone or other internet-enabled mobile device, and automatically transmit the correct position of their craft to JMRA using a GPS information service. Through GPS coordinates and an automatically updated map, the rescue ship can obtain constant positional information of the help-seeking pleasure boat as it is carried along by currents and tides, to quickly reach the rescue location. Those who requested help can also get real-time map updates on the position of the rescue boat, giving them peace of mind while they wait for assistance.

JMRA will support increased safety for pleasure craft operation using Fujitsu's cloud-based emergency position reporting system, which can be easily operated from smartphones and other mobile devices.

Picture: Real-time display of rescue boat and in-need pleasure craft positions

Picture: Pleasure craft being towed by a rescue boat

Background

In 2016, there were as many as 1,300 pleasure craft boat incidents in Japanese waters, of which about 850, or roughly 65%, needed help with relatively minor problems such as equipment failure, dead batteries, or fuel outage.

JMRA operates a variety of businesses relating to marine leisure including BAN rescue services that are offered 24/7 to pleasure boat owners who have run into minor troubles. Since July 1992, BAN has helped over 400 boats per year (445 in 2016), contributing to safe marine recreation.

When pleasure crafts encountered problems, there were often challenges in confirming their location. Due to the lack of reference points on the sea, and as tides and currents can carry vessels away, those requesting help had difficulties conveying their position to BAN's Rescue Operations Center. Therefore, there was a demand for a system that could enable more efficient, rapid rescues.

About BAN's New Features

Figure: Diagram of the new BAN system implementing emergency position reporting

1. Rapid rescues through accurate position information

This system enables both the Rescue Operations Center and the rescue boats they dispatch to continually know the accurate position of those requesting help through GPS coordinates and an automatically generated map. As a result, rescuers can reach the location more quickly using the GPS information from their smartphones or other mobile devices. Because the system can share the real-time position of the rescue boat on the phones of those who request help, they can wait for rescue with peace of mind. Furthermore, the Rescue Operations Center, the rescue boat and the craft requesting assistance can all see the movements of the boats on the same map, significantly reducing time until the rescue and preventing the risks of secondary accidents such as collisions that occur while the craft drifts.

2. Simple rescue requests from smartphones

The service can be used both by smartphones and internet-enabled mobile phones. In case of trouble, one can easily access the emergency position reporting system on the internet, generating an urgent report to the Rescue Operations Center while transmitting necessary information including location and contact details. This will enable those requesting rescue to calmly respond to the problem and accurately convey their position, which would otherwise be difficult to determine as it may change with the current.

Future Plans

JMRA will further expand BAN, contributing to a safer and enriched marine recreation experience.

Fujitsu will ensure the stable operation of this cloud-based system and continue to develop new services and information databases to support safe ship voyages.

Essential PH-1 vs Motorola Moto Z2 Force: two amazing flagship smartphones you can get for $750

image

On one corner, we have a new-comer Essential PH-1; while on the other we have Motorola Moto Z2 Force. Let's check out these two flagships and see which is superior.

It is one thing to be great at developing software, but it's a different kind altogether when it comes to developing smartphones. That's exactly the position of Andy Rubin, the founder of Android operating system, as they introduce the PH-1 flagship. This is their maiden voyage, let's check out the the PH-1 specs below :

  • 5.71-inch Quad LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1312 x 2560 pixels or ~504 ppi pixel density
  • Edgeless screen
  • Titanium and ceramic body
  • Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 chipset, Octa-core (4x2.45 GHz Kryo & 4x1.9 GHz Kryo) processor, Adreno 540 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • Dual 13MP primary camera with f/1.9 aperture, phase detection & laser autofocus and LED flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with f/2.2 aperture
  • 128GB internal storage with no microSD expansion slot
  • Android Nougat 7.1
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3040 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Snap-on accessories
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • August 2017 release date
  • $699 USD price tag
  • We admire the PH-1 with its large 5.71-inch Quad HD LTPS IPS screen with an edgeless display. Wrapped up in a beautiful titanium and ceramic body, it further enhances the look and feel of this flagship. Then there's the usual fingerprint sensor and Gorilla Glass 5 as a means of protection against any mishaps that might occur.

In terms of performance, you can only expect it to be a speed demon with the Snapdragon 835 chipset, a blazingly fast octa-core processor, great graphics and 4GB RAM. There's simply nothing that the PH-1 won't be able to run fast enough, with some left in the tank for more.

All work and no play will make it a little dull, isn't it? Well, that's where the dual 13MP primary camera will come into the picture. The number of features and functions that goes into the PH-1 is simply amazing. To top it all off, the 8MP selfie camera is there to cater for all your selfies.

Storage-wise, there should be more than enough with the 128GB of internal storage found on the PH-1. And that's about all you can get on it, as there's no expansion slot. You may have to turn to cloud storage and UBS-on-the-go to add more space to it.

Powered by the latest Android Nougat 7.1 operating system is natural, and it helps to unlock further its exceptional power.

Regarding power, there's only the 3040 mAh battery supplying the necessary juice to the PH-1. It should be just enough to last for a full day in between charging,

An advantage of the PH-1, is on its modularity. Just think as it like a Snap-on accessory that can extend the functionality of the smartphone, something like Motorola has been doing with its Moto Mods. One of it is a 360° camera which has been the latest craze worldwide. Show everyone your surroundings with this add-on that can be easily fixed to the smartphone.

Let's now turn our attention to the Moto Z2 Force. You may find there are quite a number of similarities with PH-1.:

  • 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1440 x 2560 pixels or ~535 ppi pixel density
  • Metal body
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Gorilla Glass protection
  • Shatter-proof display
  • Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 chipset, Octa-core (4x2.35 GHz Kryo & 4x1.9 GHz Kryo) processor, Adreno 540 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • Dual 12MP primary camera with laser & phase detection autofocus, OIS and dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to maximum 256GB
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 2730 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Android Nougat 7.1.1
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • Moto Mods
  • August 2017 release date
  • $750 USD price tag
  • Having just released, Moto Z2 Force is a solid smartphone that is built to withstand any force. Blessed with the 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED screen, its look and feel are further enhanced by the beautiful metal body. As usual, there's the fingerprint sensor and Gorilla Glass for protection. But wait, there's something extra in the form of shatter-proof display – which is why the name Force was appended.

Surprisingly, the Moto Z2 Force is sporting a similar hardware with the Snapdragon 835 chipset, fast octa-core Kryo processor, great Adreno 540 graphics and 4GB RAM. This should put it on par concerning performance.

Same goes for Moto Z2 Force's camera, as it sports a dual 12MP primary camera which seems to have more features. It has the advantage of Optical Image Stabilization and dual-LED (dual tone) flash to its name. For those who love taking selfies, now you can even take it in the dark and all will look fine thanks to the dual-LED (dual tone) flash fitted on it.

As for storage, the Moto Z2 Force might have just half the amount which is 64GB but makes it up with the availability of an expansion slot. Should you need more space, and surely you would need it – just pop in a microSD card up to a maximum of 256GB.

Just a note of caution though of its 2730 mAh battery. If you are a particularly heavy user, just bring along a powerbank just in case.

Last but not least, the latest Android Nougat 7.1.1 operating system is available with its release. The latest software and best hardware combine well in this case.

    Conclusion:

Essential PH-1 have everything it needs to succeed. With Android's OS creator at the helm, it will be a great maiden journey. Amazing 5.7-inch Quad HD edgeless screen, great looks, great protection, great hardware, great dual 13MP primary camera, great 128GB storage and the latest Android Nougat 7.1 OS makes for an irresistible flagship smartphone. It is also cheaper by $50 in this round.

Essential PH-1 is currently available for $699 USD and is available in Stellar Gray, Ocean Depths, Black Moon and Pure White colours.

Elsewhere for Motorola Moto Z2 Force, it is an unstoppable force as well. Blessed with great 5.5-inch Quad HD AMOLED screen, great hardware, great protection, great dual 12MP primary camera, an expansion slot and the latest Android Nougat 7.1.1 operating system is its strongest points.

Motorola Moto Z2 Force had just been released for $750 USD and is available in Super Black, Fine Gold and Lunar Grey colours.

Windows 10 update set for October release

Microsoft on Friday announced that a major update to its Windows operating system will be released globally on October 17.

Release of Windows 10 "Fall Creators Update" will come the same day that Windows Mixed Reality headsets powered by the software hits the market, Microsoft executive vice president of operating systems Terry Myerson said in a blog post.

Unlike virtual reality gear already available, Windows headsets made by partners such as Acer, Asus, HP and Lenovo will not require cameras to track user movements, according to Myerson.

Windows headsets will be priced as low as $299, and will need to be plugged into computers powered by the Fall Creators Update, Microsoft said.

The U.S. technology titan showed off the Windows 10 update at the company's annual developers' conference early this year to encourage creation of offerings tuned to the software.

At the time, Myerson said the update will offer, among other upgrades, "enhancements in gaming, security, accessibility, and immersive new experiences made possible by Windows Mixed Reality."

The original version of Windows 10 debuted a little more than two years ago.

The latest version of Windows 10 is being built into a wide array of devices that will be on the market in time for the year-end holiday shopping season, according to Microsoft.

The company promised an audience of more than a billion people for those who develop services or applications for Windows 10.

Microsoft has highlighted how Windows 10 will let software savants serve up creations on the full spectrum of smart devices, including the HoloLens augmented reality headgear.

"By combining our physical and digital worlds, we believe mixed reality is the next step in the evolution of human computing," Myerson said in the blog post.

Microsoft was left behind in the smartphone market, which is dominated by Apple and Android-powered handsets.

Designing Windows to make Microsoft cloud services available from competitors' devices and moving quickly in the nascent mixed-reality market were seen as shrewd moves by the company.

Windows 10 is designed to power all kinds of devices, from wearable computers to smartphones to desktop machines, and an application needs to be written just once to perform on all of them, according to Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella.

Nadella said at the conference that "the mobility of the experience is what matters, not the mobility of the device."

To get Windows 10 adopted quickly, Microsoft plans to give it away as a free upgrade for a year after its release.
