OnePlus 5 confirmed for a summer release

The OnePlus 3T received top marks from the CNET staff.

The follow-up phone to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T is coming out, and it won't be called the OnePlus 4. In fact, it will be called the the OnePlus 5, and it will come out some time this summer.

The company confirmed the news, originally reported in The Verge, to CNET.

OnePlus, a relatively unknown phone maker a few years ago, has since whipped up a cult following for its upper-midrange hardware that typically undercuts premium prices. Its last phone appeared in November.

So why is OnePlus apparently skipping 4 and going straight to 5? Speculators suggest that the number four is considered unlucky in China, where OnePlus is headquartered. Apparently the folks at OnePlus were also influenced by retired NBA player Robert Horry, The Verge said. There are reportedly two paintings of Horry, who wore the number five on his jersey, hanging in the office.

The official teases are also starting to mount. Earlier this w eek, CEO Pete Lau posted a teaser picture on Weibo stating that a new phone was in the works. OnePlus also released a Star Wars Day tweet on Thursday with the number four crossed out by phones meant to look like lightsabers -- perhaps hinting at the new name.

Despite all the hints, official details are still being kept under wraps. However, some info allegedly leaked when a listing for the OnePlus 5 appeared on retail site Oppomart. Rumored details include the following:

  • 5.5-inch QHD display with 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution
  • 12 megapixel dual-rear cameras, 8 megapixel front camera
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor
  • 6GB of RAM
  • Fingerprint scanner on the front
  • Oppomart also lists the price as $449 (approximately £346 or AU$605) and gives an estimated ship date of early June. Sounds like we'll hear more rumors and teases in the coming weeks.

Apple Dips as Global Smartphone Shipments Hit 353 Million in Q1 2017

Boston, MA - May 3, 2017 - According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments grew 6 percent annually to reach 353 million units in Q1 2017. Samsung recaptured first position with 23 percent global smartphone marketshare, while Apple dipped to 14 percent share. OPPO surged 78 percent annually and was once again the star performer.

Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, "Global smartphone shipments grew a steady 6 percent annually from 333.1 million units in Q1 2016 to 353.3 million in Q1 2017. The global smartphone market reached a bottom in the first quarter of 2016, when it fell 3 percent, but demand has picked back up and the growth outlook for this year is improving due to economic recovery and stronger consumer sentiment in major regions like China and Brazil."

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "Samsung shipped 80.2 million smartphones worldwide in Q1 2017, rising 2 percent annually fr om 79.0 million units in Q1 2016. Samsung recaptured first place this quarter, after losing top spot to Apple in the previous Q4 2016 holiday season. Samsung has done well to recover quickly from its recent Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco, and we expect the new Galaxy S8 portfolio will help to maintain Samsung's upward momentum through the middle of 2017. Apple fell 1 percent annually and shipped a lackluster 50.8 million smartphones for 14 percent marketshare worldwide in Q1 2017. Apple iPhone shipments have declined year-on-year in four of the past 5 quarters. Apple has been unable to capitalize on Samsung's Note 7 missteps, and it is clear that Apple has to do something radical with its rumored upcoming iPhone 8 portfolio in the second half of this year to arrest the ongoing slowdown."

Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "Huawei maintained third position with 10 percent global smartphone marketshare in Q1 2017, up from 8 percent a year ago. Huawei's smar tphone growth rate has more than halved, to 22 percent annually in Q1 2017, compared with 64 percent annual growth in Q1 2016. Huawei is facing intense competition from OPPO, Vivo and other emerging Chinese rivals such as Gionee."

Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "OPPO shipped a healthy 27.6 million smartphones and maintained fourth position with a record 8 percent global marketshare in Q1 2017. OPPO grew 78 percent annually in the quarter, outperforming all its major rivals. OPPO is now just two percentage points of marketshare behind Huawei and closing in fast. If current trends continue, OPPO could soon be battling Huawei for third position in the global smartphone market. Vivo held fifth place, capturing a record 6 percent global smartphone marketshare in Q1 2017, leaping from 4 percent a year ago. Vivo's range of Android models, such as the V3 and X7, are proving wildly popular in China, taking share from rivals such as Xiaomi, Samsung and Apple. Me anwhile, LG returned to 6th place with 4 percent global smartphone share, as it performed well in North America and leapt ahead of ZTE, Xiaomi and others."

Smartphones can help control release of glucose-lowering hormones in mice: Study

Home > News > Smartphones can help control release of glucose-lowering hormones in mice: Study By IANS | Published: May 2, 2017 12:00 AM IST comments Tags: Science technology News mobile user app

Researchers in China have developed a system that enables smartphones to control release of glucose-lowering hormones in mice by engineered cells, paving the way for the development of an automated way for monitoring blood glucose levels and delivering insulin in humans too. It is estimated that 415 million people worldwide are living with diabetes, and frequently need to inject themselves with insulin to manage their blood sugar.

The findings, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, showed that cells engineered to produce insulin under the command of a smartphone helped keep blood sugar levels within normal limits in diabetic mice. Combining living tissues and technology, Jiawei Shao of East China Normal University in Shanghai, and colleagues created custom cells that produced insulin when illuminated by far-red light – the same wavelengths emitted by therapy bulbs and infrared saunas.

These designer cells were transfected with optogenetic circuits, which enabled them to produce the hormones in response to far-red light. A smartphone could adjust far-red light intensity and duration with help from a control box. Implanting hydrogel capsules containing both engineered cells and light-emitting diode light sources provided a semiautonomous system that maintained glucose homeostasis over several weeks in diabetic mice. This study illuminates the potential of cell-based therapies and the researchers believe that successfully linking digital signals with engineered cells represents an important step toward translating similar cell-based therapies into the clinic.

SRT Phone: The Sachin Tendulkar Android Smartphone To Release on 3rd May

IoT startup Smartron holds the unique distinction of being a startup with Sachin Tendulkar as one of their investors. While Indian cricketing legend and global sporting icon Sachin Tendulkar is all set to make mark felt across Bollywood, there will soon be a Sachin-branded SRT Phone – an Android smartphone endorsed by Sachin into the markets. This will be produced and sold by Smartron.

This phone is expected to be manufactured in one of the Foxconn facilities. The phone would be designed keeping in mind the Indian consumers, as well as other competing smartphones. Reports indicate that the SRT phone would be priced in at less than INR 15,000 – a budget that Indian smartphone buyers have no problem with.

While little detail is known about the specifications of the device, we now know that the SRT phone would be announced on the 3rd of May. Each SRT phone will feature an autograph from Sachin Tendulkar on the back. The announcement regarding the arrival of this smartphone was made by Smartron on Twitter. It is indeed an interesting concept and we are really excited to see the specifications the phone will come out with.

It is expected that the SRT phone would come with features that would compete against the recently released Moto G5 and G5 Plus. The phone is expected to feature 2 to 3 GB of RAM, and is expected to do well in the country where Sachin Tendulkar is often referred to as 'God of Cricket'.

Smartron is giving the SRT phone a key importance, as the company recently hired Motorola India MD Amit Boni as their VP of Sales and Marketing. He has been a key figure in the revival and success of Motorola in India over the years, and him joining the team would give Smartron an undisputed edge over the competition.

iPhone 8 release date LEAK - This might be our best look yet at the next Apple smartphone

Sun, January 1, 2017 iPhone 8 is shaping up to be one of the most impressive Apple smartphones to date, with glass panels on the front and rear of the device, a curved borderless OLED display and no Home Button Apple iPhone 8 will debut a brand-new all-glass look, with a curved OLED display and no physical Home Button

Apple iPhone 8 will debut a brand-new all-glass look, with a curved OLED display and no physical Home Button

The hotly-anticipated iPhone 8 appears to have been unmasked – months before its September release date.

Tipster Benjamin Geskin shared photographs of an alleged iPhone 8 dummy, leaked from Apple smartphone supplier Foxconn.

Provided this latest leak is accurate, the Apple iPhone 8 mock-up confirms a number of long rumoured features.

It looks as if Apple will ditch the physical Home Button from the front of the phone, enabling the display to bleed to the very edge of the chassis.

This follows similar trends from the likes of Samsung and LG.

Elsewhere, the dual camera set-up debuted with the iPhone 7 Plus looks set to make a return, albeit rotated 90-degrees so that it is stacked vertically.

Some sources believe this will enable advanced augmented reality (AR) features with the camera.

The volume rockers and mute switch are on the left hand-side of the alleged iPhone 8, while a sleep/wake is on the right.

This is identical to current generation iPhone models, however, one noticeable difference is that Apple appears to have elongated the sleep/wake button on the new iPhone.

Leakster Benjamin Geskin also published what he believes to be the final schematic diagram for the next iPhone.

According to the technical drawing, Apple will hide dual front-facing cameras beneath the display.

The Cupertino-based company is also expected to embed the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, which has traditionally been housed within the physical Home Button, underneath the glass.

The schematic diagram also reveals a new a noise-reduction microphone between the dual camera lens on the rear of the phone.

If the latest reports around the Apple iPhone 8, which will mark the 10th anniversary of the best-selling smartphone range, are to be believed – Apple is going to pull-out all the stops this September. Geskin published a list of headline features expected to ship with the iPhone 8.

The list includes – an all-new premium glass design, OLED display with True Tone, Touch ID hidden underneath the glass, wireless charging, 3D facial recognition, IP68 dust and water resistance rating, A11 system-on-a-chip, and long battery life.

It's worth stressing, that there is no way to verify whether all of these features will make the cut – or even be ready on time – for the iPhone launch date.

Previous reports suggest Apple is experimenting with 10 separate prototypes for the next iPhone.

Some of these dummy models include a rear-mounted Touch ID fingerprint sensor, others include one embedded beneath the display.

According to sources within Apple, there are still iPhone 8 prototypes that retain the physical Home Button.

Apple is expected to debut the iPhone 8 alongside the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus, which will feature only a few minor upgrades, in September.
