iPhone 7 release may bring significant changes

Like all the iPhones that came before it, it's safe to say the iPhone 7 release is going to be popular. Despite rumors of an early release, we think you've got a while to wait, but some interesting new details have emerged in regards to Apple's next handset.

A new rumor out of China suggests Apple is currently tinkering with not one… or two, but at least five different models for the upcoming iPhone 7 release. Each model is said to have "unique" hardware under the hood, and that tech covers about every area you can imagine. It also touches on a recent rumor regarding the old headphone jack.

Some of the components include new embedded fingerprint tech, multi-Force Touch, Dual Cameras, Wireless Charging and AMOLED panels. While none of those are earth-shattering, a Type-C USB port that's compatible with headphones would certainly be different. Recently, we had heard the iPhone 7 release may do away with the 3.5mm jack to make it thinner, but replacing the Lightning port with a Type-C USB connector is something we didn't expect.

Regardless of what kind of tech Apple crams into the iPhone 7, that charging port may be the most important component. Lots of folks weren't thrilled about having to switch to the Lightning cables, and having to switch again or use another adapter could cause some angst amongst their fans. Either way, you can expect plenty of rumors as we've got a long ways to go before the iPhone 7 release hits the streets.

The Pepsi Phone may not reach its crowdfunding goal

Last month we detailed the upcoming Pepsi smartphone, a mid-range smartphone model that would share the beverage brand for a China-only release.

The device launched on JD's crowdfunding site JD Finance this month and has been live for a week, attracting significant media attention. However with only eight days left it's yet to reach half of its 3 million RMB ($470,000 USD) goal.

Pepsi has chosen to partner with Koobee, a lesser-known Chinese smartphone vendor, to push the phone valued at approximately $250 USD (the price of the Koobee H7, which features virtually identical specs).

Those who got in early paid less than $78 USD for the a version of the limited edition phone, while early bird-options are still available for approximately $110 USD. After that users will have to pay $156 USD for the phone, or just over $200 USD for a combo including the phone and a selfie stick.

Screen Shot 2015-11-25 at 6.46.51 PM

The phone itself features a 5.5-inch 1080p display with 16GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and a fingerprint sensor located on the back of the device. Design-wise, there are hints of the Huawei Mate S that come to mind, though it's definitely participating in a lower price range.

Limited release branded smartphones are not unusual in the Chinese market. This year ZTE launched an NBA version of their Axon Mini exclusively to the Chinese market, drawing on the popularity of the NBA franchise in China to boost the sales of their latest flagship.

Renders for the Chinese smartphone brand ZUK's new model - the ZUK Z2 - have surfaced online. The leaked images point to a rotating camera for the device. of 4(Photo : MyDrivers)

It is old news that Lenovo-backed Chinese smartphone brand ZUK is gearing up to release the successor of the ZUK Z1 i.e. the ZUK Z2 in 2016. Now renders of the impending smartphone have leaked online, giving a glimpse into some of the features of the ZUK Z2.

The leaked renders of the ZUK Z2 are courtesy of MyDRivers and point to a unique feature for the smartphone - a rotating camera.

The images show that the ZUK Z2 has a fully-rotatable top side, which means that the handset will sport a single camera. Since the rear-facing camera will be able to click selfies, the smartphone does not require a separate front-facing camera.

"ZUK Z2 is equipped with a rotating camera laterally, from this design, so the machine is just this one camera (translated)," notes the publication.

This camera, however, can be used for clicking selfies by simply rotating it frontwards. However, the renders do not show the device from all angles and, therefore, it is difficult to ascertain through the images alone if the ZUK Z2 will be able to rotate 360 degrees.

The renders hint at a camera that can rotate 180 degreed, while this is a nifty feature - it has been spotted earlier on several smartphones like the Huawei Honor 7i and the Oppo N series.

The leaked images of the ZUK Z2 do not offer any details on the specs of the impending handset. However, considering that the device's predecessor comes with 64GB of on-board storage, the ZUK Z2 will likely get the same at the very least.

The images also suggest that the smartphone will sport a metal frame and have 2.5D glass on the rear as well as the front.

The company's CEO has previously confirmed a Q1 2016 release for the handset and it is rumored that the device will house the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset.

The authenticity of the renders remains circumspect and a possibility exists that the leaked images maybe the handiwork of a ZUK fan. Therefore, it is better to take the leak with a pinch of salt.

Wait for the Xiaomi Mi 5 continues as reports talk of a February 2016 release

Xiaomi Mi 5

The #Xiaomi CEO recently mentioned that the #Mi5 smartphone will be "worth the wait". And it seems like the wait will be even longer for interested buyers as the smartphone will not be unveiled until at least February 2016 according to a new report.

The company has never really made it clear as to when the device will be announced, so there's no reason to not believe in this new report. Xiaomi's last known flagship was released in August 2014, so the next major flagship is long overdue from the Chinese juggernaut. Lack of a flagship portfolio has also led to Xiaomi slipping to second place with Huawei now at the helm in China.

Taking these factors into account, it's imperative that Xiaomi acts and adapts quickly before the fans run out of patience. Bear in mind that this revelation is coming from an analyst and Xiaomi hasn't confirmed it yet, so let's take it with a grain of salt for now.

A new render of Nokia's alleged C1 smartphone surface

The Nokia C1 might come with both Android and Windows 10, as we can see in the renders.

Back in September we saw a leaked photo of the Nokia C1, this is though to be the company's first Android smartphone and now what appears to be a press render of the handset has been leaked.

France extends state of emergency in wake of terror attacksFrench authorities have said most of the Friday terrorists - five have been identified so far - were unknown to them. Next week Hollande is going to Washington and Moscow to push for a stronger international coalition against IS.

Nokia isn't allowed to release a new smartphone until 2016, but 2015 is nearly over and I'm pretty sure that they're preparing to release a line of new phones.

Although we cannot verify this latest claimed Nokia C1 render, there's always a chance it could be genuine.

Ronaldo to Leicester City? Spoof video brings best from Rafa BenitezCristiano Ronaldo celebrates with his teammate Gareth Bale after scoring a goal for Shakhtar Donetsk. I'm more satisfied with the first 78 minutes.

The images show a smartphone in four colors (grey, white, pink and yellow/orange), with a camera in the corner, while being really minimalistic. An image of an alleged Nokia C1, a phone that is said to be the first one in Nokia's return as a phone maker, is making the rounds on Chinese Twitter equivalent Weibo.

But assuming that the render above is somehow legit, it looks like Finnish company might want to release the Nokia C1 in two main flavors, each with its own operating system.

George Osborne's Autumn Statement and Spending Review to detail some of theThis will ultimately leave more power in the hands of councils providing competition and supporting local business community. The announcement was made in the Autumn Statement delivered by chancellor George Osborne on Wednesday.

Next year, Finland's Nokia could return to the mobile phone market with the C1 model. From what we can see in the renders, it seems to have a great screen-to-body ratio, which would be great. A problem with the update reset settings on some devices made it easier for advertisers to track users across various applications, and also made user data more vulnerable to other devices with wireless Bluetooth connections - even if they weren't linked to the users' PCs, tablets or smartphones. Naturally, it's unknown whether these images are legitimate and we will most likely never get a confirmation from Nokia.

Smartphones may have role in 8.1% rise of U.S. traffic deaths

Mark Rosekind: "The increase in smartphones in our hands is so significant, there's no question that has to play some role."

November 24, 2015 - 3:46 pm ET -- UPDATED: 11/25/15 11:08 am ET - corrected

Editor's note: Because of incorrect information on NHTSA's news release, an earlier version of this story mischaracterized a death rate. Last year's rate was 1.07 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The number of deaths from traffic accidents in the U.S. jumped 8.1 percent in the first half of 2015, suggesting smartphones and other driving distractions could be making America's roadways more dangerous.

Preliminary government statistics, released during a Thanksgiving holiday week known for heavy traffic congestion, showed deaths rising to 16,225 in the January-June period at a rate more than double an increase in overall driving spawned by falling gasoline prices and a growing economy.

"The increase in smartphones in our hands is so significant, there's no question that has to play some role. But we don't have enough information yet to determine how big a role," said Mark Rosekind, who heads the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the federal government's auto safety watchdog.

The jump in 2015 fatalities follows a decline in annual traffic deaths to 32,675 last year, for a record low of 1.07 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, according to NHTSA statistics. The 2014 data included 21,022 passenger vehicle deaths, the lowest since record-keeping began in 1975.

But the increase in the first half of 2015 was the biggest six-month jump in traffic deaths reported since 1977, according to statistics. Officials cautioned that semi-annual results can be subject to major revisions and noted that a comparable 7.9 percent increase in early 2012 led to a 4 percent rise for that year as a whole.

Officials said it was too early to identify contributing factors. But Rosekind told reporters that officials are looking at likely causes including distracted driving and the possibility lower gas prices have encouraged more driving among "risky drivers" such as teenagers.

Rosekind also criticized an absence of effective state laws that prohibit hand-held smartphones by drivers or require the use of seatbelts and motorcycle helmets.

The auto safety agency expects to unveil a program next year to target $500 million in federal safety grants at human factors that are responsible for 94 percent of motor vehicle crashes.

Samsung Galaxy S7 release date and specs: Expandable memory via microSD card imminent

Samsung Galaxy S7 release date and specs: Expandable memory via microSD card imminent

Samsung Galaxy S7 release date and specs: Expandable memory via microSD card imminent3DFuture blog

Only those who learn from their mistakes thrive in the long run. Samsung apparently knows how to flourish so it will undo at least one of its wrongdoings that led to a major objection in the success of Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. According to a fresh rumour coming from an Italian Samsung blog, Samsung will bring back the microSD card option in the Galaxy S7, allowing users to add extra storage when needed.

Samsung Galaxy S5 was the last flagship device that supported microSD card expansion up to 128GB but the option was no longer available in the Galaxy S6 series in favour of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB fixed variants. After losing the flagship battle to iPhone 6 and 6S series in recent years, Galaxy S7 is the much-needed boost for Samsung.

Samsung is pinning a lot of hopes on its Galaxy S7 and rumours have been rife about an early launch of the device. The competition in the premium smartphone race has been dominated by the likes of Apple's latest iPhones and Samsung took a major hit in its most profitable category. The Korean tech giant is looking to turn the tables around with the Galaxy S7.

As usual, Samsung hasn't dropped any hints about its 2016 flagship but rumours suggest the Galaxy S7 to be unveiled in February. As far as the specs go, Galaxy S7, which is internally being referred to as Project Lucky (hopefully), will sport a Quad HD display, USB Type-C port, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, fingerprint scanner, upgraded Sony IMX300 sensor for camera and an advanced version of iPhone 6s-like 3D Touch feature.

Additionally, the handset is said to arrive in two variants, one with company's own Exynos 8890 octa-core processor and another with Qualcomm's 2.2GHz Snapdragon 820 chipset.

As the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 begins on 22 February, Samsung will likely launch the new flagship on 21 February.

iPhone 7 Release Date, Specs and Features

As time passes by, the release of Apple's iPhone 7 gets closer, but nobody seems sure what the device is going to look like when it arrives. Apple Inc. is working on their new device as we are speaking, but we're still having a hard time figuring out what the killer feature of the smartphone is going to be, one analyst has given us a few clues about what will make up the core of the iPhone 7 specs.

Many are calling for an early release date for the smartphone, the precise moment when the iPhone 7 will be released has gotten even more blurry with each passing week.

It is still early to talk about the specs of the new iPhone 7, but mr. Ming Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, comes with some rumors about the matter at hand and he is known for the accuracy of his reports. Mr. Kuo blows off the rumor that Apple would switch to OLED this time around and says that Apple will keep using its LCD display technology.

He reckons the iPhone 7 will have 2GB of RAM while that on the iPhone 7 Plus will get a boost to 3GB, we're also going to see a much more powerful processor, that means much faster, more efficient processing, though stories that it's going to have six cores are likely overblown.

The size of the new phone will remain the same as the previous generation, 4.7 inch measure for the iPhone 7, and the 5.5 inch iPhone Plus. On top of those, however, the firm may seek to add a 4 inch smart phone, dubbed the iPhone 7C, for those on a tighter budget, also it is said that new device will be slimmer than that Apple has ever made, between 6 and 6.5 mm thick.

Waterproofing seems to be the latest big rumor on the cards, a recent Apple patent showed a system whereby the smartphone would be able to eject water it had taken on board.

An official release date of the device has not been revealed yet, but many people on Wall Street and beyond think it will be on the course of 2016. There's little to no evidence that Apple is actually planning to do that, but the only reason it seems more likely that the firm will stick to its cycle is because of Mr. Kuo's production estimates so and the fact that tradition, and buyer expectation, tends to count for something at Apple.

Apple to close in on Samsung in worldwide smartphone market share in 2016 – researcher

Total smartphone shipments for 2015 are projected to decline by 9.7% to 1.286 billion units, according to the latest report from global market research firm TrendForce. Though Chinese vendors have seen their shipments weakened as part of the ongoing slowdown in the worldwide smartphone market this year, their performances are above the global average. The combined shipments (including exports) from Chinese brands are estimated to grow 14.5% annually this year, accounting for 41% of the global smartphone shipments.

"Double-digit shipment growth is a thing of the past for vendors as the global market has begun to plateau in 2015 after years of growth" said TrendForce smartphone analyst Avril Wu. "While Samsung has kept its shipment title through the year, it is struggling against Apple in the high-end market and being pushed out of the mid-range and low-end segments by Chinese competitors. Facing challenges on two fronts, Samsung's smartphone business will operate in an increasingly difficult situation in the near future. Closely trailing Samsung in global shipments is Apple, which remains as the dominant and most profitable vendor in the high-end market. As for Chinese brands, they are expanding overseas to gain market share. Huawei's shipments surpassed 100 million units this year and became the third leading vendor on account of its export efforts. Xiaomi and Lenovo are also branching into the emerging markets."

Looking ahead to 2016, TrendForce expects the smartphone market to remain saturated. Annual shipments are estimated to grow 7.3% to about 1.4 billion units. Major development trends are as follows:

Shipments from Chinese brands will stay above the global average as Lenovo and Xiaomi scramble for India

Huawei's smartphone shipments skyrocketed over 40% in annual growth to above 100 million units in 2015. Compared with other Chinese brands, Huawei's supply chain is the most complete in terms of vertical integration. The vendor also has the support of its subsidiary IC design company HiSilicon in the development of its high-end smartphones. Taken together, the shipment growth of Chinese brands will exceed the global average next year, Wu pointed out. However, the performance of each vendor will be dependent on its overseas sales. If Chinese vendors only achieve limited progress in their target foreign markets, they will have to fall back to the domestic market, where the raging price war will shrink their margins further – even to the point of selling at a loss.

India is the emerging market that all smartphone vendors have set their sight on. Besides an increasing presence of Chinese brands (e.g. Lenovo and Xiaomi), a number of domestic brands such as Micromax are also rising rapidly. The Indian market has a huge room for growth since only 20% of the country's 1.3 billion inhabitants own a smartphone, noted Wu. Smartphone shipments in India are projected to maintain an annual growth rate of at least 30% in the next few years. Furthermore, Chinese vendors will continue their strategy of selling high-end smartphones at low prices as affordability is the main consideration of Indian consumers.

The scope of hardware innovations is limited for Samsung whereas Apple plans to introduce waterproof iPhones

Apple will release the upgraded 4-inch iPhone C series in the second quarter of 2016. The next iPhone (currently dubbed "iPhone 7") will be introduced in the second half of next year. The major selling points of the next iPhone will be the 3GB memory upgrade for the 5.5-inch model and waterproof feature. Based on TrendForce's estimation, about 260 million iPhones will be shipped in 2016, representing an annual growth of 12.5% and a market share of 18.5%. With the smartphone market becoming less profitable, iPhone will still have the highest margin next year compared with products from rival vendors.

As for the current market leader Samsung, Wu believes that the vendor will still have the largest market share worldwide in 2016. However, Samsung's shipments are anticipated to drop 4% annually to 310 million due to Chinese competitors undercutting its prices. Apple is anticipated to significantly narrow its market share gap with Samsung next year as well. TrendForce analysis indicates that Samsung will hold 22% of the global smartphone market in 2016, a decline from 2015. Wu added that Samsung's flagship devices for this year have hit the ceiling in specs, so the South Korean powerhouse will be straining to bring hardware innovations to its next smartphone release.

Hardware advances will be mainly related to processor manufacturing technology, mobile memory and displays

Processors made on 14/16nm manufacturing processes will be the first choice for smartphone vendors when it comes to building their next year's high-end products. The advantage of advanced processes is the ability to make chips that use less power and are less susceptible to overheating. Since much of the 14/16nm capacity next will be used to supply chips for high-end smartphones, the production of components for low-end and mid-range devices will concentrate on the 28nm process.

As the next-generation mobile memory, LPDDR4 accounts for a growing share of the overall mobile DRAM production. Since DRAM manufacturing will be mainly on the 20nm process next year, the share of 8Gb/6Gb mono die in the mobile DRAM production will also increase, significantly raising the memory density of each smartphone unit. Most mid-range devices for next year will have 3GB of memory while high-end devices will be equipped with 4GB/6GB of memory.

In terms of display specs, FHD will prevail over HD as the mainstream display technology for smartphones next year. Vendors will even use QHD display to separate their top-of-the-line devices from products of the lower segments. More models will also feature narrow bezel and curved screen.

Microsoft releases new Windows 10 Mobile test build that's likely RTM

On November 18, Microsoft rolled out its latest Windows 10 Mobile preview build to Windows Insiders on the Fast Ring.

lumia950windows10mobile.jpgThat build, No. 10586 (the same build number as the RTM version of the Windows 10 November Update for PCs, a k a "Threshold 2") is likely also the RTM version of Windows 10 Mobile.

(Yes, Microsoft no longer uses "RTM" to designate the major final builds of Windows and major Windows updates. But many of us tracking them still do.)

Microsoft officials have not said 10586 is the RTM build of Windows 10 Mobile. It's interesting, however, that Microsoft started the Windows 10 Mobile lifecycle clock ticking earlier this week, as noted by Stanislav Zhelyazkov on Twitter.

According to Microsoft's support page, Windows 10 Mobile for Business and Windows 10 Mobile for Consumer's support-lifecycle start dates were both November 16, 2015. Mainstream support for both operating systems ends January 8, 2019. Extended support dates aren't yet specified but will be some date at least three years after the lifecycle start date, according to the release notes.

The Windows 10 Mobile 10586 preview build includes more fixes and reliability fixes. It fixes problems some were having with the Start experience after upgrading and restoring. It allows users to set default save locations and now reflects correctly current storage settings. Microsoft also says the new build enables users to move apps to SD cards without having apps crash. The build also is said to lessen the resuming and loading of text when switching apps.

Improvements to the Messaging + Skype app are also available alongside the latest build. And apps and games should download from the Store more reliably, according to yesterday's blog post outlining what's in the build.

Yesterday's post cautions testers that a bug in the previous test build, 10581, causes file systems to become partially corrupted after doing a factory reset of phones. The blog post includes instructions for working around this issue.

"We highly recommend that you make sure you do a backup your phone *before* upgrading to Build 10586 due to this bug," said Windows Insider chief Gabe Aul. "Additionally, you can also recover your phone by using the Windows Device Recovery Tool to go back to Windows Phone 8.1 and then upgrade to Build 10586."

Another caution: Deploying Silverlight apps through Visual Studio to your phone still won't work in this build, but this issue will be fixed with the release of Visual Studio 2015 Update 1 on November 30.

Microsoft will begin selling the first of its new Lumia phones, the 950, on November 20 through AT&T in the U.S. The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are expected to run and/or be immediately upgradeable to Windows 10 Mobile Build 10586. Microsoft officials have said most existing Windows Phone 8.1 users will be able to upgrade to the final Windows 10 Mobile build starting in December.

As a reminder, Windows 10 Mobile isn't just the newest Windows 10 phone operating system. It also will run on new (not already available) small Intel- and ARM-based tablets in case any OEMs (or Microsoft itself) want to build such devices.

Sky Q: Seven features to tempt customers and everything you need to know - including release date and price

Sky Q takes shows from sofa to smartphone (Source: Sky)

TV viewing is no longer just a living room event.

New devices - smartphones, tablets - and services - Netflix, Apple TV, YouTube - are changing the way we watch, and we do it wherever and whenever we can.

Now, keen not to miss out, Sky has liberated its service from the gaze of the sofa, with Sky Q, a premium service connecting all your daily viewing habits - from under the covers to the daily commute.

Read more: Sky Q: TV anywhere, anytime in biggest launch in years

Launching in early 2016, it doesn't yet come with a price tag, but here are the seven features that might just tempt customers to sign up.

    1. Watch, pause and record from any device (and to any device)

There'll be a main set top box hub, but also wireless Sky Q mini boxes to connect to other TVs in your house giving you access to exactly the same TV you'd get in your living room.

It may sound similar to multi-room, but as it brings with it the rest of the new features of Sky Q with it (more below), it's a step ahead.

There's also an app which functions in the same way, bringing all the Sky Q content to a smartphone or tablet.

    2. Switch between device, mid-viewing

Stay up late watching Game of Thrones box sets? You can pause it, get some shut-eye, then pick it up again on the morning commute (if a little bleary-eyed), watching where you left off on a smartphone or tablet.

    3. Watch and record on multiple screens

Your home has multiple screens and with Sky Q, up to five of them can be used at the same time to watch different things. You can also record up to four different shows at the same time. And all that recording and watching can even be done simultaneously too.

Anything you record no longer sits solely on the box in the living room. Wherever you are, you can watch recorded shows - on a smartphone, tablet, or in another room. Apparently this is the feature most requested by customers. Now, it's here.

    4. Get a WiFi boost

Those Sky Q mini boxes not only connect other rooms, they also act as a "supercharge hub" for your braodband, giving a nice boost to the wi-fi around your home

    5. Find shows more easily - and more of them

Sky Q gives you a new EPG (that's the electronic programme guide, otherwise known as the TV listings you see on screen).

A new touchpad remote brings the humble remote control into the 21st century, letting you scroll and swipe through the guide.

In addition to the usual TV show, you'll also have the option to view videos from YouTube and Vevo, while content from the likes of GQ, Vogue, Wired, Red Bull and GoPro will be available.

In addition, there's a better search function and, though not until after launch, Sky Q will have voice search.

    6. Stream music through your TV

It may not be star feature, but it's a useful one all the same for entertainment fans.

Devices can be connected to TVs with Sky Q through bluetooth or Apple AirPlay, letting you stream music and, essentially, turning every TV into a speaker.

    7. Voice search

Everyone loves Siri, and Sky look like they know that. Users will be able to search using voice commands, just like Apple TV.

Asus Zenfone 3 price, release date, specs and rumors

asus zenfone 2 power button Will the Zenfone 3 feature a similar design to the Zenfone 2? / © ANDROIDPIT Asus Zenfone 3 price

The Zenfone 2 was introduced at US$199 for the 2 GB of RAM version and US$299 for the 4 GB RAM version. Asus tends to pitch its smartphones at emerging markets, so expect similarly low prices for the Zenfone 3.

    Asus Zenfone 3 release date

Though Asus Chairman Jonney Shih confirmed the ZenFone 3 in an interview with Trusted Reviews, the release date is unknown. The Asus Zenfone 2 landed in May of 2015,  but it's difficult to judge the Asus release cycles because of the number of variants of each device it launches.

Mr Shih has also revealed that the company intends to release 7 Zenfones by August 2016. The Zenfone 3 will likely land before the end of the second quarter.

Mr Shih has said that the Asus Zenfone 3 will make use of a USB Type-C connector but hasn't confirmed any other details about the upcoming handset. The Zenfone 3 is unlikely to house world-beating specs, like a QHD display or Snapdragon 820 processor, instead it will likely house "mid-range" specs at a budget price.

That's all we have on the Asus Zenfone 3 so far. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.

Starmobile releases their most advanced smartphone to date, Knight Spectra

Uploading photos and videos onto our social networks is the preferred means to tell people about what's going on in our lives. And why not? It's quick, it's easy, and just about everyone has a smartphone.

But when it comes to taking those photos that celebrate life's little (and large) moments, not all smartphones are created equal.

Enter the Starmobile KNIGHT Spectra, the most advanced Filipino cameraphone with a dual rear camera. Designed for social shutterbugs, the KNIGHT Spectra is just what you need to up your game when it comes to taking share-worthy pics.

"The Starmobile KNIGHT Spectra is our most advanced cameraphone to date," says Starmobile Vice Chairman and Product Development Head Michael Chen. "With its unique dual rear sensors and built-in Star Cam functionality it takes the mobile point-and-shoot experience to even greater heights."

The two camera modules work together to help you take photos that really stand out. Here's how the system works: the 2-megapixel sensor gathers data like light, exposure, and distance, allowing the 13-megapixel sensor to take brilliant photos more quickly and accurately.

"The result is faster focusing, amazing colors, sharper details, and automatic distortion correction the likes of which can only be found in high-end point-and-shoot cameras," says Chen.

Add to this Starmobile's unique Star Cam functions, which enable you to do the following:

Choose the focal point of your shot after taking the photo. All you have to do is tap on the object (or person, face, etc.) you want to focus on! With Star Cam's Super ReFocus, the dual rear camera takes photos at 10 varying lengths then compresses them into a single file.

Take photos at exactly the right exposure level. Hate how dark photos look when you don't use the flash, but also detest the overexposure that results when you do it with a normal smartphone cam?

Chroma Flash lets your phone take two photos—one with flash and one without—in rapid succession, combining them into a single file for a better overall pic.

Zoom in without compromising photo texture and sharpness. Using your smartphone to take photos of that rocking concert you're attending? Or maybe you want to capture precious moments at a loved one's birthday, graduation, or wedding. Opti Zoom shoots multiple photos simultaneously to improve the quality of those close-up shots.

"But what about when you aren't taking photos?" you be wondering. Starmobile's KNIGHT Spectra is more than just a camera with smartphone capabilities. For one thing, you can multitask, play graphics-heavy games, download files, and stream videos faster than you would be able to on your run-of-the-mill 3G smartphone, thanks to a Qualcomm Octa Core CPU, 3GB of RAM, LTE connectivity, and 32GB of internal memory you can expand with a micro SD card.

Nexus 6P: why it's the ultimate smartphone

androidpit Nexus 6P 3 Nexus 6P...the ultimate smartphone. / © ANDROIDPIT Original design

The Nexus 6P is designed like no other smartphone. Its finely-machined edges and minimal finish give it an understated character. The black glass panel on the back, sitting over the camera lens, looks strange at first. But once you forget what phones should look like and begin to appreciate what Huawei has done here, it all makes sense.

The Nexus 6P looks like the future of smartphones.

The Nexus 6P reminds me of a Porsche 911 GT3. It's not just for drivers, it's for racing enthusiasts. It has serious specs and does serious things on a racetrack. You also recognize it as it turns a corner. The 6P is just like this. It has character and a restrained toughness that makes it stand out. The Nexus 6P looks like the future of smartphones.

androidpit Nexus 6P 50 The Nexus 6P is designed like no other phone. / © ANDROIDPIT Making Nexus 'premium'

Google's Nexus project has traditionally focused on reasonably-priced devices with great specs. Nexus devices have always been accessible. But last year, the Nexus 6, at US$649, was a lot more expensive than in previous years. The Nexus 6P, at US$499 for the base model, is a high-end phone at a reasonable price. A lot of people are going to buy it.

Unlike older plastic Nexus phones – think the Nexus 5, Nexus 4 and Samsung's Galaxy Nexus – the Nexus 6P is premium. Its simultaneous release with the Nexus 5X also makes sense. The 5X is a great phone, just like the Nexus 5 was, with serious specs and a clean design for US$379. But here's the trick – releasing two models this year has allowed for two phones to target two kinds of customer.

androidpit Nexus 6P 12 The Nexus 6P is a premium Android device. / © ANDROIDPIT

Maintaining the Nexus project and its budget price range makes it hard to enter the premium market segment. But while LG was off building the 5X, Huawei was creating a slick, top-spec phablet for a very different customer. This has allowed for a premium Nexus that simply didn't work with last year's bulky, overpriced Nexus 6.

    iPhone 6s Plus competitor

The Nexus series has always been a step or two away from the iPhone and its customers. They're plastic, cheap and aimed at modders and power-users. But the Nexus 6P is at a price point that opens it up to customers who might be leaning toward the iPhone 6s Plus and can't see a viable Android alternative.

The Nexus series has always been a step or two away from the iPhone.

The 6P is a real competitor in size, performance and design – though significantly cheaper. But does a comparison with the iPhone 6s Plus really matter? Considering that we're talking about a Nexus, I think it does. Let's see how it sells.

apple iphone 6s plus 3d touch 1 The Nexus 6P could seriously compete with the more expensive iPhone. / © ANDROIDPIT It's not about Marshmallow

The Nexus program is a marketing tool for Google to unveil new versions of Android. New hardware is linked to its new software, and Google makes a fuss over its close relationships with manufacturers. But this year, it seemed like Android 6.0 Marshmallow wasn't such a big deal. But with relatively minor changes – not the huge visual overhaul Lollipop was last year – the big news was the launch of two new phones when originally we expected only one.

And the choice of Huawei to build the Nexus 6P, with the company's rise to a market-leading position in China, the question of what it wants to achieve in Western markets is clear. Huawei wants to dominate in the US and Europe as well. With premium design and a competitive price, combined with the power behind Google's Nexus project, Huawei has done something no other manufacturer building for Android has done yet. In the Nexus 6P, Huawei has built the ultimate smartphone.

Shift5+ Expected To Run Both Windows 10 & Android, More Details on Modular Smartphone Revealed

The market for smartphones is wide open for the taking and new handset makers are taking the opportunity to execute their ambitious visions. Today, the spotlight is on German company Shift, who is working on a new modular device that sports the additional feature of being dual-OS capable.

According to a report from Phone Arena, the company plans to fuse these two concepts together in its upcoming handset called the Shift5+. The Shift official website described the device as their "flagship model."

It's still not completely clear how customizable the Shift5+ is going to be, but the developer has revealed that components such as the battery and display can be swapped. Users will be able to choose from a variety of options although it hasn't been confirmed how much components are going to cost.

Specs of the Shift5+ base unit are interesting with a five-inch IPS display and a Qualcomm processor. It also includes at least 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage space, 13-megapixel rear camera, five-megapixel front camera, and battery capacity of up to 3000 mAh.

Perhaps one of the most interesting features of the new German smartphone is its ability to be powered by both Android and Windows 10. However, it won't be a dual-boot handset, per se. Consumers can choose between either OS as they purchase the device, but they won't be able to switch between Windows 10 and Android after getting the handset.

Pre-orders begin this coming December, but Shift has announced that the smartphone will not start shipping until the third quarter of 2016. The Shift5+ will reportedly cost €399 or around $342.

Other modular smartphones have been making their mark on the gadgets circuit this year. There's Google's Project Ara in the mainstream, but also Fairphone 2 and PuzzlePhone in the mix, according to a report from Tech Times.

The Project Ara was already teased during the Google I/O last May, with key components in the device swappable so the users can ideally customize the specs of their phones. Its release date was delayed to 2016. As the team reasoned on Twitter, the project includes "Lots of iterations... More than we thought."

The PuzzlePhone will reportedly be out in Sept. 2016, but it will be divided into three parts: the brain with the key hardware like processor and RAM, the spine with the display and the heart with the battery and electronics.

The Fairphone 2 comes ahead as it was already released last month fitted with Snapdragon 801 SoC, 2 GB of RAM, 8MP camera, 2,420 mAh battery and 32 GB of storage. While a screwdriver is necessary to change most parts, it's still impressive to have every part of the phone customizable.

BQ Aquaris X5 Cyanogen Edition release begins in Europe

There are some smartphone manufacturers that are more familiar names than others and BQ is not such a well-known name. We have featured some of this company's devices before though, and now the BQ Aquaris X5 Cyanogen Edition has just released in Europe. The company has collaborated with Telefonica and Cyanogen for this phone, and we have the specs details and price ahead.

Let's begin with the specifications, and the Aquaris X5 is powered by a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 412 64-bit quad-core processor with Adreno 306 graphics. It has a 5-inch IPS display with HD resolution of 1280 x 720, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded via microSD card to 32GB. It's a dual SIM device that runs the Android 5.1-based Cyanogen OS 12.1, and it has a 2900 mAh battery.

Further BQ Aquaris X5 specs include a 13-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX214 sensor, f/2.0 aperture, dual LED flash, and 1080p video capture. There's also a 5-megapixel front-facing snapper with Samsung 5E2 sensor, f/2.0 aperture, and LED flash. Connectivity is covered with 4G LTE, 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and USB OTG. The phone also features FM radio and a 3.5mm audio jack. It measures 144.4mm x 70.5mm x 7.5mm and it weighs 148g.

The Cyanogen BQ Aquaris X5 is available in Spain from today and will also release in the UK and Germany at some point in the next few weeks. Next year Telefonica plans to push out further availability in other areas that it operates in. The phone is also being sold through Movistar in Spain and the price is €209 outright (equivalent to around £148 or RS. 14,880). Alternatively it can be purchased on a 24-month contract.

For the specs of the device the price seems very reasonable. While nothing has been confirmed yet about availability in markets other than those mentioned above, BQ has already offered some of its smartphone in India. Therefore we imagine that the BQ Aquaris X5 will also go on sale in India at some point. Are you interested in this new Cyanogen-running phone from BQ? Would you buy the BQ Aquaris X5 Cyanogen Edition if it releases where you are?

The mJoose 3-in-1 Smartphone Case provides stronger connectivity, better call quality, and fewer dropped calls for the nearly 70 percent of cellphone users that experience poor signal coverage at home, work, or on their commutes. The innovative mJoose case incorporates cell signal amplification and a battery into an attractive, protective case. The mJoose case is initially available for iPhone 6/6s, iPhone 6/6s Plus, and Samsung's (News - Alert) Galaxy S6, and can be pre-ordered now on Indiegogo http://igg.me/at/vz1EGmiBv6E/x/12503647 for early bird pricing of $89 compared to the future retail price of $149.99.

The innovative mJoose Case incorporates a patented signal amplification technology that creates a better handshake between the smartphone and the cell tower by capturing the existing signal and amplifying it to improve the call reception. The mJoose Case supports CDMA, GSM, TDMA, and 2G, 3G/4G, and LTE (News - Alert) frequencies to provide compatibility with all U.S. carrier networks.

Benefits of the mJoose 3-in-1 Smartphone Case

  • Up to 100 times Signal Strength - A multi-band 700-1200MHz consumer-friendly cell signal amplifier improves cell signal performance wherever the user and smartphone travel. A CTIA (News - Alert)-certified lab has verified the mJoose case to provide 20dB gain which is equal to 100 time signal strength.

HTC One A9w could be a Windows 10 version of HTC’s latest smartphone

    HTC-One-A9w back header

We have long expected HTC to release a Windows 10 Mobile handset, but with the company in such dire straights it seems increasingly unlikely.

Now however PhoneArena reports a new handset has passed through Tenaa, the Chinese telecommunication device authority, which may be just that handset.

The HTC One A9w is a variant of  the HTC One A9 that features a 5-inch AMOLED display, with a 1080 x 1920 FHD resolution, with a octa-core 1.5GHz CPU (likely the same Snapdragon 617 SoC as the A9) , with 2GB RAM, 16GB storage and support for 128 GB microSD cards.

The camera has a 13 MP sensor with OIS and a  f/2.0 aperture. while the FFC is a 4MP Ultrapixel module. The device supports 4G LTE.

Unfortunately besides the w designation there is not much else to indicate it is a Windows phone, but PhoneArena notes now the device is certified we should not have to wait too long to find out.

The HTC One A9 is famous for looking a lot like an iPhone. How would our readers feel about having a Windows phone which looks like an Android phone which looks like an iPhone? Let us know below.

Apple Inc. Reportedly to Release a New 4-inch iPhone

    Iphone

    Apple's iPhone 5s. Source: Apple.

According to a report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is preparing to launch a new 4-inch iPhone at some point in the first half of 2016.

The phone, Kuo claims, will resemble an "upgraded iPhone 5s," suggesting that Apple will adopt a metal casing material rather than the plastic used to build the ill-fated iPhone 5c. Kuo also claims that, in order to ensure that iOS 9 runs smoothly on the device, Apple may choose to include its latest A9 processor in the phone rather than use an older-generation A8 processor.

Finally, Kuo says that in order to differentiate the larger devices, the new 4-inch iPhone will not include the 3D Touch feature that debuted on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

Let's take a closer look at this report to see if it makes sense and, if so, what it might mean for Apple's business in the coming fiscal year.

The specs check out The Apple A8 chip inside of the iPhone 6/6 Plus did not offer a particularly large boost in performance from the A7 chip inside the 5s, while the A9 offered a large boost over the A8. From that perspective alone, it makes sense that Apple would choose to equip a new, smaller iPhone with the A9 rather than the A8.

Additionally, the A8 is built on TSMC's (NYSE:TSM) 20-nanometer chip manufacturing process. Given that TSMC has made it clear that it would like to convert over its 20-nanometer capacity to 16-nanometer capacity, it probably doesn't make sense for Apple to have TSMC keep a bunch of 20-nanometer capacity up and running for longer than it needs to, especially given the performance/power enhancements that the 16-nanometer technology brings over the older 20-nanometer technology.

The lack of 3D Touch also makes a lot of sense for a lower-cost 4-inch device. For one thing, Apple probably wants to keep some features exclusive to the larger, higher-priced models in order to keep its product mix as rich as possible. Additionally, I'd imagine that 3D Touch is a non-trivial cost-adder, so Apple is likely to exclude it from the smaller, lower-cost phone to keep product margins in check.

This could help boost Apple's iPhone sales in the current fiscal year There have been worries that Apple could see its iPhone sales decline in the current fiscal year as a result of tough comparisons to the very robust upgrade cycle Apple saw with the iPhone 6/6 Plus last year.

Although it is clear that many within the iPhone installed base, as well as owners of smartphones from other vendors, had been looking forward to Apple launching larger iPhones, there are still likely many potential smartphone buyers who simply don't like larger phones.

By releasing a new 4-inch iPhone that's significantly upgraded over the prior-generation 5s, Apple can capture sales from those who held off from upgrading from both the 5 and 5s because they simply preferred smaller screen sizes.

Additionally, in the world of Android phones, there don't appear to be all that many compelling 4-inch class devices, so Android users with older 4-inch class devices looking for worthwhile upgrades might be compelled to make the switch over to iPhone.

All told, the launch of such a device could ultimately help boost Apple's iPhone sales figures and overall smartphone market share in the coming fiscal year, perhaps allowing it to achieve iPhone growth in the current fiscal year.

Windows 10 Update For Smartphones Imminent As 'Lumia With Windows 10' Goes Live

The Windows 10 update seems imminent for Lumia devices as Microsoft has altered the details on its Windows Phone support site to reflect information for software updates that are meant for 'Lumia with Windows 10.'(Photo : Kārlis Dambrāns | Flickr)

Good news for Windows-powered Lumia smartphone users as Microsoft seems poised to release the Windows 10 Update for its smartphones very soon.

The Windows 10 update seems imminent for devices running Windows 8.1 as Microsoft has altered the details on its Windows Phone support site On Thursday, Nov. 5, to reflect information for software updates that are meant for "Lumia with Windows 10."

The support page from Microsoft aids Lumia users in learning the status of the impending updates headed for their devices i.e. if the software update is being tested, ready to be pushed out etc.

The updated page from Microsoft now has instructions on how Windows 10 smartphones will get the impending software update, as well as information on how to update its device.

"Your phone supports wireless Over the Air (OTA) updates and there is no need for cables or a computer; you can simply download and install the update using your phone. Also, your settings, apps, photos, and text messages remain safe and sound," notes the support page for Windows 10 for Lumia.

While instructions on how to download the update once it is available are mentioned, details on the release date for the Windows 10 update for Lumia smartphones are not given. A strong possibility exists that the over-the-air (OTA) Windows 10 update for Lumia smartphones could be pushed out for users around the same time when Microsoft begins retailing its latest Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 950 smartphones. Why? As both these smartphones will come pre-loaded with Windows 10.

For those wondering if their Lumia smartphone is in line to get the Windows 10 update, the handsets which are slated to benefit from the software update include the Lumia 435, Lumia 430,Lumia 535, Lumia 532, Lumia 540, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 635 (1GB RAM variant), Lumia 735, Lumia 930 and Lumia 830.

Since Microsoft will be pushing out the Windows 10 software update and not the carriers, it should make its way to devices quicker than usual.

BlackBerry Priv Verizon release soon is confirmed

Although we'll confess that BlackBerry smartphones haven't been on our most-wanted list for some time, we have to say we're pretty excited to see more of the BlackBerry Priv. We know that US carrier AT&T is to offer the phone and there have been rumors about it coming to Verizon. Now we can tell you that a BlackBerry Priv Verizon release is confirmed and it's coming soon.

We've already given details of pre-orders for the BlackBerry Priv for the US, Canada and UK, followed by information on pricing directly from AT&T. The handset showing on the BlackBerry US online store says that it is not compatible with Verizon, Sprint, or US Cellular, although it was previously rumored to be coming to Big Red.

Many readers have therefore been wondering about whether the BlackBerry Priv will be up for grabs on Verizon, and recently a leaked image purporting to be a BlackBerry Priv Verizon variant turned up to give this idea further credence. However, such images can be faked and until now there was nothing official about a Verizon offering. That has all changed though, as an official Verizon News Twitter account has confirmed that the BlackBerry Priv Verizon variant is on the way.

    — Verizon News (@VerizonNews) November 6, 2015

The tweet simply states "PRIV by BlackBerry. The first-ever BlackBerry powered by Android. Coming soon." While we would have liked Big Red to provide a specific date and a price, at least we know that it's definitely on its way. If you head to the Verizon source below you can now sign up for availability updates.

If you want to find out more about the BlackBerry Priv you can take a look at our specs breakdown of it against the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. Alternatively you might like to check out a previous article where we shared a video showing features of the phone. All-in-all it's looking like a device we want to spend a bit of time with, and we wonder what you think? Have you been hoping to hear that a BlackBerry Priv Verizon variant is confirmed.

BlackBerry To Release Monthly Patches To Fix Android Flaws

BlackBerry has joined other Android phone makers that are promising timely security fixes to their customers. On Wednesday, the Canadian smartphone maker said it will roll out security patches within about a month of the disclosure of problems.

    BlackBerry Priv

    BlackBerry to issue security patches

In a blog post, BlackBerry said the patches are "critical" for fixing Android flaws in a timely fashion. Google started disclosing monthly vulnerabilities in Android earlier this year when it announced plans to come up with monthly fixes to Nexus devices. Later, Samsung and LG also came forward to offer monthly patches to their devices. However, HTC sees it as an "unrealistic" target.

BlackBerry said that all Priv devices bought through its store will be eligible for over-the-air updates as and when they are made available. Devices bought through networks such as AT&T in the U.S. will require approval from the carrier before the updates will be pushed out. The company said it could be lead to serious flaws as at times Android users are not willing to wait for a fix.

Critical cases to be dealt with through a "hotfix"

However, in critical cases when attackers actively exploit an Android flaw, BlackBerry will issue a "hotfix" capable of bypassing the need for a carrier's approval.

BlackBerry chief security Officer David Kleidmacher said, "Because a hotfix is typically limited in scope, the balance between a longer testing and approval process and the risk from the critical flaw makes this approach an important addition to helping keep users safe and secure." Kleidmacher said the company will issue a fix within 24 hours of the receipt of the notification, but it all depends on how complex the flaw is.

Kleidmacher said the patch will be applied directly on BlackBerry, and it will request its carrier partners give rapid approval. But if the company finds it necessary, then it will the apply over-the-air fix without seeking approval from the carrier, says a report from ZDNet. Kleidmacher added that a time will come when it will become mandatory for the company to act quickly because the risk associated with publicly released or zero-day vulnerability is too high. The fix will also be applicable to the vulnerabilities that are privately reported outside of the monthly patch cycle.

Carriers have often being criticized for delaying or blocking security updates, and this is one of the main reason we have so many Android software versions, says the report.
