Lenovo to release first phone with Google's Tango augmented reality technology

For pricing, Lenovo will be offering the Phab 2 for $199, the Phab 2 Plus for $299 and the high-end Phab Pro 2 for $499.

We're at Lenovo's Tech World event in San Francisco, where - after months of teasing - the company has just debuted the first consumer phone running Google's insane computer vision system, Project Tango (now called just "Tango").

Attendees get hands-on experience with the new PHAB2 Pro, the world's first Tango-powered smartphone at Lenovo Tech World at The Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, California.

The Lenovo PHAB2 ProMaking uses Google's software and sensors to enable motion tracking, depth perception and area learning.

Here's The Verge's video review and feature of the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro. Google has high hopes for Tango. When held up in front of a famous artifact, the Phab 2 Pro provides information about it.

In an effort to build on the Google Tango augmented reality pitch, Lenovo is demonstrating it with the aid of virtual-reality based apps ranging from games to educational apps.

Lowe's Vision allows for AR home decorating. These include Lowe's Home Improvement app, which lets the user see how an item would look in the room before purchasing while they are redecorating, or education apps that bring dinosaurs to life. With technologies like this, consumers could easily drop a pin of their location and someone using a Tango device could see their location mapped on the device in augmented reality. The Tango-equipped Phab 2 Pro will be available in September through Best Buy and Lenovo's site and, by year's end, in select Lowe's stores and Lowe's online store.

Perhaps one of the most impressive and useful features of the PHAB2 Pro with Tango technology that will be a reason why it matters is the indoor navigation capabilities. Imagine being able to wave your device around to scan a room to create an accurate 3d model, then dropping properly scaled renders of furniture you're considering right into the room.; imagine augmented reality games that can be played on your table top, characters climbing over and falling off the table's edges.

Gaming is another obvious reason why Tango matters and will be a good reason to consider upgrading to the Lenovo PHAB2 Pro.

The Moto Z is the thinnest smartphone in the world according to Lenovo, measuring 5.2mm thick, which has been made possible by the removal of the headphone jack, a feature present on all other smartphones.
