Android 7.0 Nougat release date news: Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ the last to get new Android OS?

(Android Developers Blog)The Android 7.0 Nougat logo

Android fans have been waiting for months for the Android 7.0 Nougat, the latest iteration of the Android mobile operating system.

However, Neurogadget warns some Samsung users that, depending on the model of the smartphone they own, it might take a while before they get their hands on Android 7.0 Nougat.

According to the website, despite being one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world, Samsung is notorious for being somewhat late to Android updates.

For example, Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the predecessor to Nougat, was launched on Sept. 29, 2015, but it wasn't until five months later that the update was made available for the Verizon Galaxy Note 5.

With the final Android 7.0 AOSP build set to be released in August or September, Neurogadget suggests that Android 7.0 Nougat may not be rolled out for some Samsung Galaxy handsets until the first quarter of 2017.

The website indicates that Android Nougat could first be released for the Galaxy Note 6, followed by the Galaxy S7, the S7 Edge, and the Galaxy Note 5. The last three Samsung devices to get Android N would be the Galaxy S6, the S6 Edge, and the S6 Edge+.

The upcoming Galaxy S8 and S8 Edge are expected to ship with Android 7.0.

As for Android N's features, a new report from Playfuldroid suggests that Samsung could introduce an overhauled user interface with an optional app drawer. The possible new UI was first seen on software from the Galaxy beta software program for Galaxy Note 5 devices in Korea and in China.

Meanwhile, XDA-Developers suggests that the new Android OS could feature improved stylus support. The website cites hints in the company's developer page for the Look API as proof that Android N will offer better tablet-specific features.

While there has been no official announcement regarding the release date for Android 7.0 Nougat, Gotta Be Mobile suggests that the update could begin rolling out by the fourth quarter of this year.

Why Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 may be the best smartphone of the year

Samsung Galaxy Note 7SAMSUNG

COMING SOON: The Galaxy Note 7 will launch on Tuesday

Samsung's Galaxy S7 edge is already the best device of 2016 but it could be about to get a major rival.

The Korean tech firm is lifting the lid on its new Note 7 and, if the rumours are true, this phone could take the crown from its Galaxy sibling.

All will be revealed next Tuesday at Samsung's Unpacked event but here's why we think smartphone fans should be very excited.

LEAK:These images may show how the Note 7 will look

1. IRIS SCANNING

Fingerprint scanners are so last year.

The new Note 7 is expected to launch with an iris scanner that takes a quick look at your eyes to unlock the phone.

This technology has already been used by Microsoft but this could be the first time it's been seen on an Android device.

However, one leak has suggested this won't be as good as it sounds as it may not work with glasses or under low light conditions.

But if it does instantly unlock the phone when you look at it, it will be an exciting new toy to play with.

Apple is also thought to planning a similar technology but it seems Samsung will beat them to a launch.

2. THE S PEN

Samsung's S Pen has been around for a while and each year it gets better and better.

This mini digital pencil allows users to draw, make notes and interact with the content on the display.

The Note 7 is sure to include this in-built stylus and we've got a feeling it could be their best digital pen yet.

3. BIGGER SCREEN

The Note range usually squeezes into pockets with a bigger display than Samsung's other phones.

Like the older Note 5, we're expecting the Note 7 to feature a 5.7-inch display.

Rumours have also suggested the Note 7's screen will be curved, making its design similar to that of the S7 edge.

Samsung's Galaxy S7 has one of the best displays on the market so expect a similar eye-watering experience from the Note 7.

4. SAMSUNG'S BEST CAMERA

Samsung's Galaxy S7 is leading the photography field this year and the Note 7 could feature similar technology.

The S7 currently features a Dual Pixel 12 megapixel camera which has super fast autofocus and can record video in 4K.

There's no confirmation that the Note 7 will include the same camera but, with the S7 performing so well, it would make perfect sense.

5. A GLOBAL LAUNCH

Fans of the Note series we're left seriously disappointed last year after Samsung didn't launch its phablet across the world.

There's no word if the same will happen with the Note 7 but it looks like everyone will be able to own one.

Samsung is revealing the new phone across in New York, London and Rio next Tuesday so that would suggest a global launch is coming.

Daily Star Online has our invite and will be at Unpacked to bring you all the news as it happens, so be sure to log on to dailystar.co.uk/tech from 4pm on Tuesday.

Rest of the specifications remains same in both the devices. The Redmi 3S sports a full metal body with 5.0-inch HD screen and features 2GB/3GB RAM, 16GB/32GB inbuilt memory, a 13MP primary camera, 5MP snapper on the front and a 4100mAh battery.

iPhone 7 release date ‘confirmed’ by Apple leak – But will the world get iPhone 6SE instead?

Apple which is known for releasing its iPhone series in the month of September, will again release its iPhone 7 on the same month, that is according to mobile reporter Evan Blass. The reporter who has been pretty accurate about the past releases of the smartphone said that pre-orders for the phone are scheduled for 9 September.

German website Apfelpage however reported that iPhone 7 will not be launched at all this year. The site which said that its information comes from Chinese supply chain sources which have seen final retail packaging, claimed that new phones will be called the 'iPhone 6SE' and 'iPhone 6SE Plus'.

The website macrumours said that "multiple rumors suggest it (iPhone 7) will be a modest update that continues to use a design similar to the design of the iPhone 6s. It is said to have the same general shape as the iPhone 6s, but it may have a camera that protrudes less (though rumors currently disagree on this point). Antenna bands across the back of the device have been removed, but are expected to remain at the top, bottom, and sides of the iPhone. The front of the iPhone is also expected to see some changes with a longer earpiece cutout, a relocated ambient light sensor, and perhaps a flush touch-based home button."

Google Nexus 2016 Release Date, Rumor: First Ever Smartphone in The Market Compatible with Daydream VR

Check out latest rumor on Google Nexus 2016 feature and specs roundup

Google Nexus 2016 HTC: Fist Google Smartphone Compatible with Daydream VR?

Previously, there's been a rumor swirling on Google project Daydream that could be the best VR headset released this year. Daydream allows users to navigate, launch apps, watch contents and games, all in VR mode. KnowYourMobile described the VR platform as a combination of impressive 'software and hardware' with specs much higher than its previous Cardboard.

With the Daydream being developed; Google is partnering up with several smartphone makers including Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and LG to produce Daydream-ready devices.

Google might also need its new Nexus series to have a device offering the compatibility mode. This leads us to the rumored Google Nexus 2016. The HTC-built phone set to launch this year, is rumored to be the first smartphone compatible with Daydream VR.

Google Nexus 2016 rumors: awesome specs with special screens and sensors?

As Google is rumored to launch two variants of HTC Nexus, named Sailfish and Marlin, these two smartphone variants are expected to be VR-ready to meet today's market. It should have special screen and sensor to be compatible with Daydream VR as well. Aside from that, fans should expect high specs and features.

HTC Sailfish could sport 5.2 inch screen with 420 ppi pixel density, a full HD resolution screen display. It will likely to sport Snapdragon 820 processor and of course, the latest Android OS, Android Nougat. As for HTC Marlin, the handset will sport larger screen, 5.5 inch. Marlin and Sailfish will include USB type C.

According to the previous leaks, Google Nexus 2016 rear camera will have 12 MP shooter and front camera will sport 8MP shooter. Based on the previous artists' renders, BGR claimed that the HTC Marlin design looks similar to HTC 10.

Thus, the design of Google Nexus 2016 could be inspired by HTC 10 but we expect the new device would be thinner or lighter? TechnoBuffalo reviewed the renders and suggested the public to prepare themselves with a different outcome of the look of the image as this is only a speculation.

Google Nexus 2016 HTC possible release date is in September this year.

Samsung profits boosted by smartphone sales

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and New Improved Gear VR Leak in High Definition

The mobile division reported a slight decrease in revenue, but still stronger operating profits – $3.84 billion, which is around $382 million more than last year's second quarter. Profitability on lower-end models also improved.

In the third quarter, the South Korean company expects that the release of a new large-screen flagship smartphone will help maintain sales of high-end smartphone portfolio, led by the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

IBD'S TAKE: Apple stock has an IBD Composite Rating of 23, putting it in the bottom quarter for stocks in key metrics over the last 12 months.

Apple posted an operating profit of US$10.1 billion and sales of $42.4 billion in the quarter ending June 25.

The strong quarter comes in contrast to that of Apple Inc., which reported a 27% drop in quarterly profit Tuesday, its second consecutive quarter of falling revenues.

The forecast comes on the heels of a Canalys report earlier this week that indicated the worldwide smartphone market showed modest growth in the second quarter after a disappointing first quarter.

Looking ahead, the South Korean giant predicted a solid second half of the year, but its spending on marketing is expected to rise as Samsung seeks to counter the arrival of the upcoming Apple iPhone in the third quarter. Even so, Samsung said demand for mobile and non-volatile storage chips increased, helped by the company's competitive edge in differentiated products, including 20nm DRAM, V-NAND and 14nm mobile application processors. Samsung dominates the global supply of OLED display panels for mobile phones.

The Note series has never had as much of a sales impact as the S-series smartphone, and there will be increased competition with a new iPhone set for release later in the year.

Sales climbed to 50.94tn won (€41bn) while operating profit came to 8.14tn won (€7.3bn). Every quarter, Samsung owns about a fifth of a market, though sometimes its share is closer to one quarter. That's a nod to the Galaxy Note 7, which will see an official launch on Tuesday. Samsung phones accounted for nearly a quarter of all smartphone sales during the three months.

"Apple continues to face iPhone fatigue among consumers and the new iPhone SE model has not been able to stem that trend". According to the company the flagship devices of Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were the main contributors for the growth within the mobile segment.

Reliance Jio LYF smartphone inventory piles up over delay

Despite a 15% year-on-year growth in smartphone shipments and a surge in demand for 4G handsets during the April-June quarter, Reliance Jio has been stuck with a huge inventory of its LYF range of mobile phones, because of the delay in launch of commercial services, CounterPoint Research said in its report on Thursday. During the quarter, there were about 30 million smartphones shipped into India, of which 20 million were LTE-based handsets.

"Reliance Jio continues to maintain fifth spot but the brand's sell-through has been not upto expectations due to further delay to the launch of commercial LTE network services. As a result, that brand has been sitting on high inventory during the quarter," CounterPoint Research said in its quarterly Market Monitor service, a report that ranks the handset companies by shipments every three months.

During the quarter, the company sold 2 million handsets, while only 1.5 million subscribed to its services, Reliance Industries, its parent company, said in its latest earnings release.

Smartphones supporting 4G or LTE services saw demand surge more than 264% from a year earlier, the research company said, and added that handsets that support local languages and were made in India were the preferred choice for consumers during the quarter.

"We estimate that by the end of 2016, more than 10 million smartphone users will have phones supporting at least more than 12 languages and this will be a very important trend every OEM will have to follow to further penetrate the Indian smartphone market," said Pavel Naiya, analyst at CounterPoint.

Among other smartphone firms, Samsung Electronics led the market with 25.6% growth, followed by home-grown Micromax that had a 14.1% market share. Intex Technologies retained the fourth position with 8.5% share, and Lenovo Group, along with sales of its Motorola smartphones, gained 8.3% market share to be the fifth largest firm by shipments, CounterPoint added.

Smartphone sales boost Samsung’s second quarter

Samsung has reported second-quarter revenue of $45bn and an 18% year-on-year increase in operating profit to $7.2bn, boosted by strong sales of Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones.

Operating profit at the company's mobile division was $3.8bn, 27% higher than the same period a year ago.

While the Galaxy S7 was Samsung's top earner, "a streamlined mid to low-end smartphone line-up also contributed to improved profitability", according to the company.

The results are in sharp contrast to those of rival Apple, where quarterly profits were down 27% year on year to $7.8bn as iPhone sales fell 15% compared with the second quarter of 2015.

While Apple expects further falls in iPhone sales in the current quarter, Samsung predicts the rise in demand for its smartphones and tablets will continue through the second half of the year.

However, the company also expects more competition as other companies release new mobile devices. It has said it plans to strengthen its high-end line-up, while "maintaining solid profitability" of its mid to low-end products.

In the third quarter, the South Korean company expects that the release of a new large-screen flagship smartphone will help maintain sales of high-end smartphone portfolio, led by the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

    China exclusive

Samsung said it will focus on growing smartphone sales, including this year's new Galaxy A and J series, and the debut of the Galaxy C series exclusively for the Chinese market.

Samsung said its consumer electronics division also achieved significant earnings growth, revenue from display panels improved, and demand for semiconductors for mobile and solid state drives (SSDs) rose.

Looking ahead, the company expects growth in high-density, premium SSD products to continue, and greater demand for mobile storage stimulated by the launch of new products from smartphone manufacturers.

Unfortunate news for Pokémon trainers as Nintendo has delayed the release of the Pokémon Go Plus which was originally slated for July 27. Image Nintendo

As Pokémon Go continues to burn through users' body fat and smartphone batteries, the one device that could lighten the load on smartphones has been delayed.

The Pokémon Go Plus is a wearable that was set to be released on July 27 worldwide, but Nintendo recently confirmed that it would be pushed back to a September release, reports Tech Radar.

Nintendo of America released the information via Twitter.

Ready to bokeh? Xiaomi's newest smartphone is, thanks to a funky dual-lens camera

Dual cameras are certainly one of the biggest smartphone trends this year, with Huawei and LG already in on the game, and even Apple rumored to be following in the near future. However, it's Chinese brand Xiaomi that's next in line with a dual-lens cam, which is the standout feature on its new Redmi Pro smartphone.

The two lenses perform different tasks on the Redmi Pro. The top lens, which is a 13-megapixel Sony supplied IMX258 sensor, takes still images as usual, while a 5-megapixel Samsung lens underneath takes in depth of field information. What does this mean? The background in your pictures can be blurred out, to give that cool "bokeh" effect that's usually reserved for DSLR cameras with special lenses.

Related: Phones don't get much bigger than the Mi Max

Xiaomi has left the depth of field processing down to a dedicated ImagiQ image processor, and clever software lets you mess around with focal points on the picture, so you can get exactly the look you want after taking the shot. We've seen this technology before, most recently on the Huawei P9, and before that on ZTE and HTC phones. In addition to the rear cameras, the Redmi Pro has a wide-angle, 5-megapixel front camera.

The camera lenses are mounted inside a brushed aluminum body, with chamfered edges, and a 5.5-inch OLED screen on the front that's covered in 2.5D shaped glass. Xiaomi hasn't used OLED display technology on its phones before, but its recently released Mi Band 2 fitness wearable does use a tiny OLED screen. Xiaomi promises a very high contrast ratio, and vivid colors from its new display. Underneath the screen is a fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi is calling the Redmi Pro its most powerful entry into the Redmi range yet, with a monster MediaTek deca-core processor inside that's 30 percent more efficient than other similar chips. There's 4GB of RAM to help out, although some models come with 3GB or RAM and a choice of 32GB, 64GB, or a very generous 128GB of internal memory. If you choose the cheapest 32GB model, it has 3GB of RAM and a Helio X20 chip, while the other versions come with a Helio X25. The phone will take a second SIM card, or the slot can be used to add even more storage space, plus there's a 4050mAh battery and a USB Type-C charging connector.

There are three colors — gold, silver, or dark grey — and the Redmi Pro costs from around $225 to $300, depending on spec and storage. The release date has yet to be confirmed, but don't expect it to be available outside of China or Xiaomi's other markets when it does hit the shelves.

‘Pokemon GO’ Latest News, Release Date & Update: When is 'Pokemon GO' Coming to Windows Phones?

It seems that "Pokemon GO" is finally coming to more platforms than just iOS and Android. Gamers will soon be able to "catch 'em all" when the game hits Windows Phones.

For those of you wondering, yes, people still use Windows Phones, and they are the same people who are clamoring for the highly addictive game to become compatible with their devices, taking to Change.org to petition for it.

The demand has been heard by Niantic, it seems, as Phone Arena reports that ST-Apps, a third-party developer, is already looking to develop "Pokemon GO" for Windows 10 Mobile, which is expected to be released in 2017. At the moment, there's only a proof of concent by ST-Apps, and there's no official authorization or order from Niantic to create the game for Windows Phones.

According to MS Power User, the Snapchat 2 and One Auth developer is currently caught up in other ventures and cannot create the game at the moment, which is probably why the gif shows only a low-graphic type of game compared to that of "Pokemon GO." The developer also believes that the encryption of Niantic's servers will make it more difficult for him to develop the game. There are currently about 88,000 signatures on that Change.org petition.

STApps user/developer wrote on Reddit that he created it to show that it could be done, and Niantic should not shy away from creating "Pokemon GO" for Windows Phone users. He even promised that if gamers support his idea and show interest, and if Niantic does not release an official version by August, he would develop it and "release it as an open source project."

He added, "This is a proof of concept for a client to play the very same game on WM too. I won't be able to reproduce the same graphics, but it can be enough to just start playing with your friends."

WATERLOO, Ont. — BlackBerry is launching a new smartphone, less than a year after releasing the Priv.

The company says the DTEK50 is its thinnest phone and will be its second device powered by Android.

BlackBerry is also promoting the phone's beefed up security measures, saying it is designed to fend off cyberattacks with features such as built-in malware protection.

The phone will retail for C$429 and is available for pre-order online.

BlackBerry has faced calls to stop making smartphones because of disappointing sales and instead focus on its growing software business.

But CEO John Chen has so far shown no inclination to get out of the hardware business, having promised earlier this year to release two mid-range, Android-powered phones before the company's fiscal year ends Feb. 28, 2017.

Moto E3 Release Date and Specs Revealed

Today we have more tech specs about the upcoming Moto E3 together with great news for the fans of the brand, as the new smartphone (made by Lenovo) is set to arrive earlier than previously expected. In an previous article from 2 weeks ago, word was that the new Moto E3 will hit the shelves in September, but today we found out that the smartphone will launch earlier, in August, one month ahead from what was stated originally by the company.

As per tech specs, the Moto E3 is basically the same stuff the G4 Play is made from. For example, the display is exactly the same, a 5 inches wide variety with 720p resolution and they both run on a "clean" version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, i.e. sans bloatware/skins/in-house-made UIs and whatever makes a droid stutter. Also, there's an 8 megapixels main camera on board, together with a secondary 6 megapixels snapper for video calling and selfies. The internal storage space is a modest 8 gigabytes, expandable via micro SD cards and both smartphones feature LTE connectivity.

Where's the difference then you may ask, I mean why should you buy (or launch) a Moto E3? Well, the main difference is under the hood and a little bit in terms of design. The Moto E3 is thinner (8.6 mm vs 9.9 mm in the G4 Play) and slower, as it runs on a MediaTek system on chip, a quad core variety with the CPUs clocked at 1.6 GHz. You can't expect much from a budget droid, however the Moto E3 comes with the cool nanocoating gizmo, which in layman's terms means that it's somewhat splash resistant, i.e. Motorola Splashguard.

Long story short, the Moto E3 will arrive in UK one month from now, give or take, in August, and it will be priced at 100 GBP. The G4 Play is set to arrive simultaneously for 130 GBP.

OLED to Become Leading Smartphone Display Technology in 2020, IHS Markit Says

LONDON (July 25, 2015) – Although liquid-crystal display (LCD) has dominated mobile phone displays for more than 15 years, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display technology is set to become the leading smartphone display technology in 2020, according to IHS Markit (Nasdaq: INFO), a world leader in critical information, analytics and solutions. AMOLED displays with a low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) backplane will account for more than one-third (36 percent) of all smartphone displays shipped in 2020, becoming the most-used display technology in smartphone displays, surpassing a-Si (amorphous silicon) thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD and LTPS TFT LCD displays.

"While OLED is currently more difficult to manufacture, uses more complicated materials and chemical processes, and requires a keen focus on yield-rate management, it is an increasingly attractive technology for smartphone brands," said David Hsieh, senior director, IHS Markit. "OLED displays are not only thinner and lighter than LCD displays, but they also boast better color performance and enable flexible display form factors that can lead to more innovative design."

Samsung Electronics has already adopted OLED displays in its smartphone models, and there is also increasing demand from Chinese Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, Meizu and other smartphone brands. Apple is also now widely expected to use OLED displays in its upcoming iPhone models.

At one time, OLED displays were entirely glass-based and in terms of performance, there was little difference between LCD and OLED displays. Now, flexible OLED displays made from thinner and lighter plastic are enabled and have drawn Apple's attention. "Apple's upcoming adoption of OLED displays will be a milestone for OLED in the display industry," Hsieh said.

Samsung Display, LG Display, Sharp, JDI, BOE, Tianma, GVO, Truly, and CSOT are also starting to ramp up their AMOLED manufacturing capacities and devote more resources to technology development. Samsung Display's enormous sixth-generation A3 AMOLED fab, for example, will enable even more AMOLED displays to reach the market. Apple’s iPhone 7 finally gets a release date

It's time to mark your calendars, folks. According to reputable leaker Evan Blass, Apple's highly anticipated iPhone 7 is set to hit store shelves on Friday, September 16th.

Word of the not-yet-official release date originally came via a tweet from Blass indicating that Apple was going to release the device during the week of September 12. In turn, there was some initial confusion as to whether or not the week of September 12 referred to the product's unveiling or the actual launch event.

DON'T MISS: iPhone 7 won't have a headphone jack, but Apple has a trick up its sleeve to keep you happy

Clearing things up, Blass published a follow-up tweet on Saturday in order to address any confusion.

Just to clarify, this refers to the retail release, not the launch event. To be even more specific, it should happen on Friday, Sept. 16th.

    — Evan Blass (@evleaks) July 23, 2016

Given Apple's previous iPhone release history, not to mention Blass' impressive track record regarding these types of rumors, it's a safe bet that crowds will be lining up outside of Apple retail stores this coming September 16. As a quick refresher, recall that Apple released the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 on September 25 and September 9, respectively.

With that release date in-hand, we can also deduce that the actual iPhone 7 unveiling will likely be about 10-14 days earlier. Looking at the calendar, it's not unreasonable to presume that Tim Cook and co. will get on stage either on September 6 or 7 and introduce Apple's next-gen smartphone to the world.

Now as for what type of features the iPhone 7 will bring to the table, it's believed that Apple is saving its most jaw-dropping new features for the iPhone 7s (which may be called the iPhone 8). That notwithstanding, the iPhone 7 might very well be more interesting than many people are giving it credit for, in large part due to what may be a huge leap forward in camera technology.

It's long been assumed that the iPhone 7 Plus will receive an advanced dual camera system, but recent product leaks indicate that the camera module on the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 is significantly larger and protrudes to a greater degree than the module found on the iPhone 6s. And given how impressive the iPhone 6s camera is, it stands to reason that the camera on the iPhone 7 will be an absolute game-changer.

As a quick point of interest, the following video purports to show what a leaked iPhone 7 looks like next to an iPhone 6s.

What's more, rumors also indicate that Apple with the iPhone 7 will finally abandon the 16GB entry-level model. Instead, it's believed that the storage tiers for the iPhone 7 will be 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. While there have been some rumblings of a 256GB model being made available, those rumors have been sketchy at best.

And of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that the iPhone 7  — according to a number of credible reports — will not ship with a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, a controversial design decision to say the least. Consequently, Apple will likely ease us into that transition by providing a lightning to 3.5mm dongle (at no extra cost) inside every iPhone 7 box.

The first leaked video of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 showing an iris scanner, hinted that the latest smartphone, which will be launched in August 2016, could be the first one in the market with an enhanced security to unlock the phone.

An anonymous user posted the huge leak on Weibo and the video demonstrated the iris action for the Galaxy Note 7. This could mean that the Galaxy Note 7 could be one of the most impressive smartphones the world would ever see.

Techies and Galaxy Note users cannot wait to have their hands on the new Samsung smartphone with its unlocking power. The leaked video shows a man unlocking the phone in less than a second. The iris unlocking feature in the leaked video have had fans running around asking what components Samsung will have on board, reported Mirror UK.

BGR revealed Galaxy Note 7's top features taken from industry experts. The new smartphone will outfit 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 64 GB+ of storage, enough for techies who love taking photos and videos, especially with the microSDXC support that's up to 2TB.

It also comes with Exynos 8893 processor or Snapdragon 821 processor, and techies said either is best depending on the region.

The Galaxy Note 7 may boast a 12-megapixel Dual Pixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Users don't have to worry browsing social media network or connect with friends while soaked in a bath tub with its IP68 dust and water resistance capability.

Another best feature of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is the fingerprint scanner, a very convenient way to unlock a phone. The last spec, the Iris scanner may have just sealed the deal, making the smartphone the first in the market.

Mirror UK reported that Samsung is all set to launch the latest version of its large-screen Galaxy Note 7 smartphone on August 2. Samsung has apparently announced an "unpacked" event. The South Korean company also confirmed the unveiling of the Galaxy Note 7 through its official website.

"With added functionality of the S Pen and large screen, the Galaxy Note7 is a powerful instrument for achievement and self-expression, and is made for those who want to get the most from their phones – and their lives," Samsung wrote on its website.

Gorilla Glass 5 will soon make your smartphone screen a lot stronger

Dropping your smartphone mid-selfie may soon be less traumatic.

New York glass maker Corning has unveiled the latest iteration of Gorilla Glass, which the company claims is four times as likely to survive a fall from waist or shoulder height as its competitors. The company's Gorilla Glass products have been used in 4.5 billion devices since 2007, including products from Samsung, Apple, Motorola, LG, Hewlett-Packard and others, according to its website.

A global survey cited by Corning revealed that 85 percent of smartphone users have dropped their mobile device at least once in the past year and that 55 percent have dropped their mobile device three or more times in the past year. That's a lot of buttery fingers and potentially cracked screens. Thus, it's no surprise that easily broken screens rank among the most frequent complaints from smartphone users.

In laboratory tests, Corning dropped phones face down on to "rough, unforgiving surfaces," such as asphalt, from waist and shoulder height, presuming that many accidents happen while putting a phone in your pocket or taking a photo. Gorilla Glass 5 remains intact after falls from about five feet approximately 80 percent of the time, the company asserts.

Here's how Gorilla Glass is forged: Corning places glass into a "hot bath of molten salt" that heats up to 752 degrees Fahrenheit. The process causes sodium ions to leave the glass, and potassium ions from the salt bath replace them. Because potassium ions are larger, they produce a "layer of compressive stress" deep inside the glass that resists damage.

Gorilla Glass is hardly the first innovation for the 160-year-old Corning. The company's history includes developing the casing for Thomas Edison's incandescent light, the original heat-resistant glass cookware, and the cathode rate tubes that were used in experimental television sets.

Corning's release comes as consumers tend to be keeping their smartphones for longer periods of time before upgrading to the newest model, said William Stofega, an industry analyst at IDC. Fewer mobile phone carriers and manufacturers are offering subsidies to purchase new phones, which has contributed to more consumers leasing devices or paying full retail price. Gorilla Glass 5 and its promise to be less breakable could give some devices a marketing advantage, he said.

"Everyone is paying top dollar for premium devices [and] these devices have been prone to shattering," Stofega said. "Honestly, despite the fact everyone looks at brand, display is a really important part of the retail sales process."

Apple iPhone 7 Release Date: Newest iPhones Sans Headphone Jack To Release On Sept. 16

Though it's widely known that Apple launches and releases its new iPhone installments in the month of September, there has been no word on the exact release date of the upcoming iPhone 7 until today.

Renowned smartphone leaker Evan Blass took to his Twitter account @evleaks within the first hour of Saturday to reveal the release date of the upcoming iPhones, reported GSM Arena.

According to Blass, the release date of the iPhone 2016 units will fall in the week of September 12.

Though Blass did not give the exact date for the iPhone 7's release, it's easy to conclude that the handset and its other two versions will be released on Sept. 16, the Friday of the specified week.

Apple is known for keeping its tradition when it comes to the release dates of its smartphones. In fact, all of the previous iPhones starting with the iPhone 5 were released on a Friday of September.

Meanwhile, Apple is said to be launching three iPhones this year instead of just the usual two: a standard model and a bigger Plus version.

Apple Insider's Roger Fingas confirmed on Monday that the Cupertino giant is all set to unveil three versions of the iPhone 7 in early September.

There's going to be a standard iPhone 7 with a 4.7-inch display, an iPhone 7 Plus with a 5.5-inch display and an iPhone 7 Pro with the same 5.5-inch display but with a dual-lens camera system and a Smart Connector at the back.

What's disappointing about this news is the fact that consumers who want to have the top-specced iPhone 7, they need to pay handsomely and aim for the highest tier model among the three, as pointed out by Forbes.

In related news, Apple is said to have found a way to address the issue on the absence of the 3.5mm headphone jack from its newest iPhones.

Because the headphone jack is still the most universal audio plug, the iPhone maker will reportedly ship its new smartphones with a Lightning to 3.5mm dongle, BGR reported citing a research note from Deutsche Bank.

Aside from the dongle, Deutsche Bank has learned that the iPhone 7 models will have "professional class water-proofing" and a re-designed home button.

Bendy Samsung smartphones may feature 'flexible muscles'

Samsung has made no secrets about its wish to release flexible smartphones in the not-too-distant future, but now we know how they may go about making it a reality.

The company has filed for two patents, with one interestingly describing a feature called 'artificial muscle' which would allow a potential handset to bend.

The proposed tech appears to consist of a set of interconnected plates, arranged to respond to the movements through sensors. This would allow components, described in the patent itself as the display panel and an image processing board, to move safely.

That bendy display, shown in the second patent, would involve a foldable panel split into a top section and a bottom section. That's a similar concept to the one Sammy released back in 2014, shown below.

As always, it's important to keep excitement in check when discussing patents. It's possible this buff, muscular technology could be the next big innovation from Samsung, but it's also just as likely it never sees the light of a production line.

If not, we'll still have the all-but-confirmed curved screen of the Galaxy Note 7.

Not to worry if you drop your smartphone! Gorilla Glass 5 Is On The Way

Corning incorporated, the manufacturers behind toughened glass for Smartphones 'Gorilla Glass', revealed its next release Gorilla Glass 5 on Wednesday, July 20. The Gorilla Glass 5 is said to be of next- gen technology and is the toughest glass developed by Corning till date. According to their lab tests, Gorilla Glass 5 can survive a 5.2-foot drop (1.6 meters) 80% of the time on an average, which is quite impressive.

In an interview given to Techcrunch senior vice president of Corning Jim Steiner revealed that the new Gorilla Glass 5 performs 1.8 times better than Gorilla Glass 4.

Gorilla Glass 4, Corning's last iteration, was released in November 2014 and also generated some major news with its drop resistance technology and gorilla_glassscratch proof glass. Apple's iPhone has also used Gorilla Glass in the past, and the upcoming iPhone 7 is also speculated to be using Gorilla Glass 5.

As per Corning's recent study, more than 85% people drop their Smartphones at least once per year, and over 55% have dropped it more than 3 or 4 times. With the recent selfie craze, Many bizarre vine videos of people dropping their Smartphones, breaking or scratching them got a lot of buzz on the internet. Gorilla Glass 5 is expected to be released later this year.

John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass commented, "With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning's advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses."

"With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement," he added.

With the much-anticipated release of Apples's iPhone 7, and now the rumors of it including Gorilla Glass 5 social media is going berserk.

It seems that Alphabet Inc. is preparing to release two Nexus handsets (codenamed Sailfish and Marlin) next month and their features and specs have already surfaced all over the internet.

There are also reports which say that the big search engine company is planning to release, alongside the flagship smartphones, two new Nexus branded smartwatches. However, Android Police has already showcased an image of the upcoming Nexus handsets from HTC and in concordance with it, the new Nexus smartphones will come with a two-tone black on black finish.

In addition, the Nexus logo that has been found on the previous Nexus handsets has been replaced with a simple "G" letter. However, there are reports which say that the "G" logo will be changed once the final version of the device will be released. Als, these two handsets are expected to come with an all-metal look and a glass finish on top of the rear casing.

When it comes to Android 7.0, the operating system that the Google Nexus 2016 will run on, it seems that it will come with support for Google's latest VR platform. This VR platform is named Daydream and it will function ONLY on the new Nexus devices that Google will release this year. It seems that, by doing this, the big search engine company is trying to capture more of the virtual reality market.

The Google Nexus 2016 devices are expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset, which, according to reports, it will offer 10 percent faster performance compared to its predecessor. However, TBR believes the end of the year-long trial period on July 29, 2016, for enterprises of Windows 10 - after July 29 enterprises downloading Windows 10 will be charged a subscription fee of $7 per month, per seat - will help spur Windows license purchases among enterprises, helping fill some of the revenue and profit gap created by fewer PCs shipped, and continuing to shift Windows' overall product mix to more lucrative Pro licenses.

This segment, which includes results from server products and services (including Windows Server and Azure), grew 7 percent to $6.7 billion. But the big highlight as always was Azure revenue, which grew 102 percent, and usage of Azure compute, which more than doubled year over year. For the year, revenue from the More Personal Computing segment, which includes Windows, fell 6.3% to $40.46 billion. Under this alternative reporting regimen, revenue for the quarter was was up 2 percent to $22.6 billion, operating income was down 3 percent to $6.2 billion, and net income was up 8 percent to $5.5 billion.

NSF awards engineers $705K to improve Wi-Fi, smartphones

BUFFALO, N.Y. — University at Buffalo engineers have been awarded two grants totaling $705,000 to help develop next generation wireless networks and improve the performance of smartphones.

The grants, from the National Science Foundation (NSF), will support research and educational outreach to help solve problems such as crowded bandwidth, the security of mobile devices and inefficient operating systems.

They align with the $400 million Advanced Wireless Research Initiative — announced Friday by President Barack Obama — that aims to spur innovations that lead to mobile devices that can download movies in seconds, live high-resolution video from ambulances to emergency rooms, improved self-driving vehicles and other advancements.

"NSF has a long, proud history of catalyzing fundamental research in networking and communications that has resulted in profound impacts for science and society," said James F. Kurose, PhD, assistant director of Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) at NSF, which is leading the wireless initiative. "Fundamental research on advanced wireless will be transformative and take us beyond the current and next generation of wireless — beyond what has been envisioned thus far."

"NSF will invest more than $400 million in support of this initiative over the next seven years. NSF is working with an industry consortium to plan and deploy Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research (PAWR) — four city-scale research platforms — to enable at-scale and use-inspired experimentation," said Thyaga Nandagopal, PhD, program director for NSF's CISE Research Infrastructure (CRI) program, which supports the development of world-class research infrastructure in computer and information science and engineering.

"The University at Buffalo has long been at the forefront of innovation and leadership in computer science and engineering. Support from the NSF and other organizations is critical to helping us advance our mission of scholarly excellence and research that benefits society as a whole," said Chunming Qiao, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in UB's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

    Wireless networks

The proliferation of wireless devices and bandwidth-hungry computing applications has created wireless traffic jams that slow the transmission of data.

The first award, a $630,000 grant, focuses on developing next generation Wi-Fi and cellular networks that aim to solve this problem. In particular, engineers are creating software, hardware and other tools that take advantage of unoccupied, high-frequency bands (60 gigahertz) that provide an opportunity to greatly increase the rate at which wireless data is shared.

This project, which involves creating a one-of-a-kind testbed for experimentation, will be led by principal investigator Dimitrios Koutsonikolas, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Co-principal investigators, all from UB's Department of Electrical Engineering, include Dimitris Pados, PhD, Clifford C. Furnas Professor of Electrical Engineering; Josep Jornet, PhD, assistant professor; and Zhi Sun, PhD, assistant professor.

The research aligns with a NSF CAREER award, the agency's most prestigious grant for young investigators, recently awarded to Koutsonikolas.

    Smartphones

The second award supports PhoneLab, an existing smartphone platform testbed located at UB built with a $1.3 million NSF grant.

Most smartphone researchers conduct tests in the marketplace, which constrains their access to the smartphone, or create their own test group, which is costly and time-consuming. PhoneLab solves both problems by offering unparalleled access to an existing group of smartphone users.

PhoneLab offers participants discounted smartphones and service. In exchange, the participants join research studies led by scientists and engineers from around the world. Over the past four years, PhoneLab has run experiments that have led to smartphone performance and security improvements.

The $75,000 award will help PhoneLab continue to develop more powerful, secure and efficient smartphones and smartphone applications, improve wireless networking, and educate students and the public about mobile devices.

The award is led by principal investigator Geoffrey Challen, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and co-principal investigator Qiao.

Whether it delivers what OPPO promises is up to you, go check out our review and quick look at what its camera can do. Almost six month after the F1, the OPPO F1s announced today by the manufacturer is expected to take it to the next level, being built "on the strengths" of its predecessor (which managed to generate a record growth for the company in the first quarter).

The company is positioning the upcoming OPPO F1s as one of the core products in its line-up for the second half of the year. Little is unveiled in the official press release about the phone, but OPPO promises that it will "carry on the F1's legacy of superb photography, sleek design and snappy performance, while adding new features and taking others to new heights".

No pricing and exact availability are available at the moment for the OPPO F1s, but we should expect it sometime in August.

Whether the OPPO F1s will include the cool tech we've seen demoed by the company at MWC (the new, SmartSensor stabilized image sensor, and Super VOOC fast charging) is yet unknown.

ZenFone 3 review: Zen and the art of great midrange phones

The original ZenFone would be two years old this month, but I doubt many of them are still in use. It was highly anticipated before release, and widely panned shortly thereafter. I have friends who bought the first generation ZenFone, and the issues were obvious right from the start: the battery couldn't last half a day, the UI was clumsy and unresponsive, it got so hot you could barely hold it, and the build quality and design really weren't up to par.

A lot has changed in the last two years. The ZenFone 2 was well-received by our team and continues to be a good buy for the price. But ASUS has been hard at work, and I am happy to tell you that today, the ZenFone 3 is getting me that much closer to smartphone Nirvana: a good phone, and it's cheap. Doesn't look too bad, either.

There are a lot of models to choose from in the new ASUS ZenFone lineup. Six, actually; or seven, if you count the ZenPad 3. The mid-range "vanilla" ZenFone 3 hit the shelves in Taiwan a couple of days ago, and I picked one up to replace my aging Sony Xperia ZL. I was torn between the 5.2" ZE520KL and the 5.5" ZE552KL, but eventually decided on paying the extra $60 and I'm glad that I did. Let me cut right to the chase: everything that was wrong with the ZenFone 2 Laser from our previous review has been fixed with the ZenFone 3, and then some. Well, almost everything: the software bloat remains.

Features & Highlights If a phone falls in the woods with no-one around to hear it, does the screen still crack?

This phone is slippery. It's glass on both sides. The ring around the edge is smooth but ever-so-slightly-rubberized plastic. I really think ASUS should have gone for a more tactile plastic instead of the glass, or at least something more grippy around the outside. I guess it looks and/or feels more premium with glass, but it just doesn't make any sense. Thankfully, I bought a case together with my phone, and I strongly advise you to get one. If you just want a rubber bumper case, that would be fine. I went for a 3rd party flip case. ASUS is making their own flip case for this phone, but it's more expensive. Apparently you can see the clock through a circular cut-out on the front, a feature that I don't really care about.

But before you tuck your phone into its case, and before you smudge your grubby little hands all over this fingerprint magnet of glass, take at least a little while to admire it - it is actually quite good-looking. The buttons on the right side of the phone are very tactile. They're raised enough and patterned enough to be obvious, and very satisfyingly clicky.

    ZenFone 3 - Right

The fingerprint reader placement is also pretty good, but it's almost a double-edged sword. Without a case, the placement is perfect. With a case, or at least with my thicker 3rd party flip case, you end up trying to stick your finger in the cut-out to hit the fingerprint reader just right. It feels rather clumsy. Surprisingly though, it works. My fingerprint works about 9 out of 10 times, and I'm still getting used to it.

    ZenFone 3 - Back 1

Size-wise, this phone is big - for me. If you're used to 5.5" phones or larger phablets, it's probably nothing new, but I'm coming from a 5" phone with soft keys. The extra half-inch of screen size, combined with the capacitive buttons being below the screen rather than at the bottom of it really makes a difference. It is just barely possible for me to reach either the bottom row of capacitive buttons or the notification bar without feeling like the phone is going to pop out of my hand. I'm glad I didn't wait for the 5.7" Deluxe model. This one is big enough, and I've got big hands.

The rest of the phone is pretty straightforward:

  • USB Type C and speaker on the bottom
  • Headphone jack on top
  • SIM tray on the left, which you need a pin to pop out.
  • The screen doesn't do too well in direct sunlight - it's pointing directly at the sun in this photo.

ZenUI: Clean, straightforward. Very Zen. (Except for the bloat.)

So the first thing to do when you get a ZenFone is open up your app drawer, tap the menu, and tap Uninstall. Then you can uninstall all of the bloatware easily without uninstalling them each one at a time.

One of the things I like about ZenUI is the multi-purposing of various buttons. Smartphones generally don't have more than a couple of buttons, but the whole idea of Zen is that sometimes less is more. Here are some shortcuts I've found to be useful:

  • Double tap home to enter one-hand mode (partially solves the "bigness" issue)
  • Long press the app switch button to take a screenshot (beats the pants off volume down + power finger gymnastics)
  • Double tap the fingerprint sensor to open the camera; single tap to take a picture
  • Double tap the home screen to sleep / wake
  • Double-click either volume key to jump into the camera from sleep
  • Customizable "ZenMotion" touch gestures for launching apps from wake.
  • The are even a couple of "ZenMotion Motion Gestures" (yes that's what they are called on the phone) you can do without touching the screen. For instance, when you get a call, you can turn your phone face down to silence it, or put it next to your ear to answer.

Mobile Manager, ASUS's version of an Android housekeeper, does a really good job of cleaning up all of the mess and gunk that builds up on a phone over time. From one app, it is super simple to clean up apps that spam your notifications, apps that start on boot, apps that take too many permissions, or apps that eat too much mobile data. You get fine grained control over all of those things in a very intuitive interface. It also has a "speed boost" app that supposedly clears your RAM. You should not use a task killer on Android, but since many people don't know any better, maybe at least including it with the phone will prevent people from downloading one of the junk, spyware-like versions from the Play Store.

    zenfone3-mobman1 zenfone3-mobman2

Here are a couple of other cool features ASUS provides that someone might want to know about:

  • Any app can be placed behind a lock screen using the aptly named AppLock
  • Themes. Lots and lots and lots of themes. Some free, some cost a buck or two, but there are many themes to choose from. And icon sets.
  • zenfone3-applock zenfone3-themes

  • Easy Mode, which, let's face it, is basically Old Person Mode, complete with extra-large font and a maximum of 9 non-movable homescreen apps
  • Kids Mode, which is almost the same as Easy Mode except you need to enter a PIN to access other apps, answer phone calls, or leave Kids Mode.
  • zenfone3-easy zenfone3-kids

One thing I found rather frustrating was that the quick launch buttons (the ones in the notification shade) are divided into two sections, labeled ambiguously as "tools" (green) and "items" (blue), and you must have exactly 4 "tools" (one row) and either 8 or 12 "items" (2 or 3 rows). I found that I only wanted 2 of the "tools" but 10 of the "items", which also adds up to 12, but is not a possible choice. This is pretty stupid.

    Zenning out with some games

I tried Need For Speed: No Limits and as a (very) casual gamer, I am more than satisfied with the performance of the ZenFone 3. Sure, it's not as fast as the Snapdragon 820 (or now the 821), with undoubtedly slower benchmarks all of that jazz. But you know what? It runs smoothly without any discernible lag or choppiness, and the graphics look about as good as they get on phones. Good enough for me, and I would say good enough for the majority of casual gamers.

Indirectly related to gaming, there is also a pretty cool feature ASUS has included called Game Genie. As the name suggests, it's meant for gamers, but you can in fact use it in any app. It's essentially just a screencasting tool that allows you to simultaneously record the screen, the front facing video camera, and microphone in a single video. Watch me play Need For Speed:

    Crouching Tiger, Hidden ZenFone

I stopped by the local zoo to test out the camera, and I'm very happy with the performance for the price of this device. Manual focus, exposure, and shutter speed definitely allow for some better looking pics than the auto mode, although auto is OK for a quick point and shoot. One thing is noticeable about the camera immediately: it's fast. For the autofocus and for the actual image capture; both feel very, very fast. You can even shoot in rapid fire succession and sort through your pics afterwards to find the best ones, I got up to about 15 photos before the camera app finally paused for a moment to work on the processing. After 1-2 seconds it was ready to go again.

Night time pics are not great. There is a lot of blooming, and backlit signage is practically invisible. The picture looks a bit grainy as well if you zoom in, presumably because of the higher ISO setting. Daytime pics, however, look really good. These pics were taken "mostly auto," i.e., in manual mode but with most of the options set to auto. You can see in the filename whether or not the photo was taken with HDR mode on (if the filename ends with "HDR_On"). The video camera records in 4K, and the clip below was shot in full auto mode and uploaded directly to YouTube.

Overall, the ZenFone 3 is an excellent mid-range, mid-2016 smartphone. The low points for me are some aspects of the design, the audio quality, and the software bloat. The high points are basically everything else: it's fast and smooth, the screen is bright (but could be better in direct sun), the camera shoots 4K video, and some of the ZenUI apps are actually useful. Best thing about it? It's only $250-300, unlocked.

I would definitely recommend this phone to someone who is not a phone snob, but who would appreciate a quality phone at the right price. I almost never buy phones that have just been released as the prices drop so quickly, but the ZenFone 3 was cheaper than almost anything comparable, even against other phones that have been out for 6 months or a year already.

It will be important to see how the ZenFone 3 holds up after a few months of daily use, and since it was just released we really have no way of knowing. But I am keeping my fingers crossed. While it hasn't brought me directly to Phone Nirvana, I've been pleasantly surprised by the Zen of the ZenFone 3.
