Less than a day before Google's next big event, where the company is expected to announce an array of new products, a report has leaked that one of those products will be a new virtual reality headset.

The headset, which will be part of Google's new Daydream brand of VR products, will be priced at $79, according to a report from Variety.

A source in contact with the film and television industry news site also indicated that Google's new VR headset will work with two new smartphones being offered by the search giant.

Back in May, Google showed off reference designs for VR headsets that could be produced by partners on its Daydream VR platform. However, we don't know if the VR headset from Google will follow the same form factor as the company's earlier reference designs, which look a lot like the current Samsung Gear VR headsets and target mobile VR users.

The report also claims that the Google VR headset will use the company's new smartphones as its display and, in line with earlier reference designs, use a handheld controller instead of a touchpad like the one featured on the side of the Samsung Gear VR device.

If this report is true, the $79 Google VR headset would be priced competitively versus the Samsung Gear VR device, which currently sells for $99.99.

Google has not confirmed the report of a new VR headset, but with only hours to go before the company's event, we won't have long to wait to find out if this latest report is accurate.
