The Pixel: Bell leaks details of secret Google-brand smartphone

Canadian phone company Bell has leaked details of secret plans to release a Google-brand smartphone, after details for pre-order were posted on its website.

The telco managed to take down the webpage, but the cat was well and truly out of the bag.

The pre-order page seemed to confirm the release of a smartphone called the Pixel, with a picture of the phone's user interface.

The leak comes after Google teased an announcement set for October 4, United States time.

In August, Google announced its decision to kill off their Nexus-brand smartphones.

There are rumours Google will announce a 5-inch model named the Pixel and a 5.5-inch Pixel XL model.

Both phones are reported to represent a new philosophy at Google's phone division.

It is a big move for the company, which is trying to take more control of a very fragmented Android market and compete directly with Apple with its own phones.

According to tech blog, The Verge, "Google is the only company in existence capable of [competing], because it's the only company to command a mobile app store as good as Apple's."

"These new Pixel phones will be something all together new from Google, and they could well set the whole mobile industry on a whole different trajectory."
