This Android phone does such a great job of highlighting the iPhone 8’s biggest potential problem

Earlier this morning, we took a look at the most impressive iPhone 8 leak to date. Using CAD drawings that are believed to have leaked from a Foxconn factory, someone was able to build an iPhone 8 mockup out of real metal and glass. The subsequent video is likely our best look yet at what's coming later this summer when Apple unveils its next-generation iPhone 8 flagship phone.

Of course, there's one major question that no iPhone 8 dummy will ever be able to answer: what are Apple's plans for that cutout at the top of the iPhone 8's display. There are two different directions Apple could go, and a new photo of an unreleased Android phone reminds us of just how awful the first option would be.

Pictured above is an upcoming new phone from a company called Essential, which posted the image to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. Founded by Andy Rubin, one of the creators of the Android operating system, the company's first smartphone is set to be released later this year. It's a neat sounding phone with cutting-edge specs, and it follows the current trend of barely-there bezels most of the way around the display.

As your eye traces the perimeter of the Essential phone's screen, it inevitably stops in one particular spot. Yes, it's that hideous cutout at the top of the screen that takes a huge bite out of whatever graphics are displayed on the phone at any given time. Needless to say, it's a huge step in the wrong direction in terms of user experience.

According to all the leaks and rumors we've seen so far, Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 will have a similar cutout at the top of the display, where the phone's camera, sensors, and ear speaker will be located. The question, of course, is whether Apple plans to take a big bite out of the graphics displayed on the phone, or if it plans to use a smarter implementation like the one we described earlier this month.

As a reminder, here's what the iPhone 8 might look like if Apple takes the same path as Essential:

And here's what the iPhone 8 might look like if Apple uses the top portions of the display as I described:

With this solution, the top portions of the display are reserved only for status bar items, and the background always remains black. This way, you won't have a huge chunk taken out of the UI as you use the phone. There are a few question marks here like what happens in landscape mode, and it only works if the face of the phone is black, which would mean no silver, gold, or rose gold iPhone 8.

That sounds crazy, but remember that the iPhone 8 is just one of three new iPhones set to launch this year. It's entirely possible that the iPhone 8 will be made available only in black, while the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus launch with a wider color selection.

Apple is expected to unveil all three new iPhone models in September, though rumors suggest the iPhone 8 might not be released until sometime in October.

Galaxy S9 price, release date and specs: Smartphone set to feature both 7nm Snapdragon and 8nm Exynos chips

Samsung Galaxy S9 won't come in a Qualcomm Snapdragon variant, according to rumours

THE GALAXY S8 may have arrived on shelves mere weeks ago, but reports claim that Samsung has already started production of next year's flagship: the Galaxy S9.

We've done some digging, and this isn't all we know about the so-called Galaxy S9, so we've rounded up everything we know about the handset so far.

Specs- 5.8in / 6.2in QHD+ Super AMOLED curved display (570ppi / 529ppi)- Android 8.0 'O'- Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (US) / Samsung Exynos (UK)- Display embedded fingerprint scanner- Dual rear-facing camera- Bixby AI assistant with dedicated button- USB-C

Release dateWith reports claiming that Samsung will start production of the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus this year, it's likely that the handset's will debut earlier in the year than the Galaxy S8, and hints that Samsung could be planning a launch at next year's MWC.

PriceThere's no word yet on pricing for the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. If anything like the S8, expect handsets to fetch around £689 and £779 SIM-free.

Latest news28/6/17: Despite recent chatter that Samsung wouldn't offer a Snapdragon variant, new rumours suggest that the Galaxy S9 will use both its own 8nm Exynos chips and an as-yet-unannounced 7nm processor out of Qualcomm. The same report claims that TSMC will make the upcoming Snapdragon chip, rather than Samsung.

23/6/17: Speculation over at Weibo claims that the Galaxy S9 might not come in a Snapdragon variant, with the smartphone instead shipping only with Samsung's own Exynos 9810 processor, complete with CDMA network support. If this rumour is legit, it would mean that Qualcomm and Samsung have reached an agreement in relation to a CDMA patents issue.

12/6/17: The Galaxy S9 will be the first Samsung smartphone to boast new AMOLED screen tech codenamed 'Sunflower', according to a report at Android Headlines. Tech specs haven't yet been confirmed, but it's likely Samsung is looking to improve the display fidelity.

24/5/17: The Bell reports that production of the Galaxy S9 will likely start as soon as this year, with Samsung having settled on the codenames Star and Star 2 for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones. The report also notes that S9 and S9 Plus will have "similar specs" to the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, and won't feature Samsung's foldable display tech.

21/4/17: Reports claim that Samsung and Qualcomm have started developing the so-called Snapdragon 845 processor - based on the second-gen 10nm manufacturing process - which is tipped to debut inside the Galaxy S9.

1/4/17: Korean publication The Bell claims that Samsung has  started work on the display panel for the Galaxy S9 and S9 Pus. It doesn't say much else, but notes that the screen will be similar to that found on the Galaxy S8, and will be made available in the same 5.8in and 6.2in sizes. µ

Suzuki Develops Free-Of-Charge Smartphone App — For Better After Sales Service Experience

Suzuki Motor Corporation, the parent company of Maruti Suzuki, has developed a free-of-charge smartphone application to enhance after-sales service experience of customers.

The application called Suzuki Diagnostic System Mobile is specially designed to enable easy acquirement of outboard engine information for the user.

Upon the maintenance of an outboard, SDSM lets the user read engine information to a smartphone, just by reading the QR Codes displayed on the Multi-function Gauge (MFG).

Additionally, by attaching the motor information to an e-mail and sending it to a service staff, examination by a service team utilising special tools upon arrival would no longer be needed. This facilitates quicker after-sales service.

The app applies to all fuel-injected Suzuki outboards that can be installed with MFG, and its release has started for iPhone (timing varies between areas), while the release for Android is also scheduled, subsequently.

Features of Suzuki Diagnostic System Mobile:

    1. Acquirement of outboard engine information

The user can obtain engine information quickly with a smartphone and attach it to an e-mail and send it to a service staff. The service staff will be able to identify the exact situation of the outboard form that engine information.

    2. Quicker after-sales service

Since the special tool for acquiring engine information is no longer needed, work efficiency would enhance, enabling quicker after-sales service.

    3. Usage record of outboard can be checked

Usage record of outboards such as operating hours per RPM and operating hours since the last engine oil change can be checked.

    DriveSpark Thinks!

With a free-of-charge Suzuki smartphone app, your post sales service experience will change and better connected to the diagnostics of the engine.

New Surface Phone Concept Design is a Foldable Stunner, 2017 Release Would be Awesome

Industrial designed Ryan Smalley has just mocked up a concept design for a foldable Surface Phone, and it's certainly a stunner. The concept design looks like its based on various rumors about the Surface Phone, including the patent that Microsoft has for a foldable device. The rendering is beautiful, and covers a number of form factors that Smalley collectively terms "Surface Note."

    Surface Phone

The rendering also shows the seamless joint where the device is folded. When opened out, you won't see the fold at all, and it will simply look like a single, larger screen.

Of course, this is merely a rendering based on rumors and leaked information, but such a device could be a massive hit in the smartphone/tablet market, especially if it has Windows 10 on ARM and can run win32 desktop applications.

What's intriguing about this concept is that it includes support for a Surface Note Pen, which makes sense because productivity apps would be high on the list of priorities for such a device. There's also a dual camera shown in the image.

Microsoft seems to be on schedule for a fourth quarter release of a "Surface Mobile"/Cellular PC/Surface Phone device with Windows 10 on ARM, and at least three major original equipment manufacturers are on board with Microsoft and Qualcomm on this project.

It's very doubtful that this year's Surface Phone device will be a foldable type, but we're hoping that there's at least no change in the launch schedule, even if it does have a regular smartphone-type form factor.

Meanwhile Microsoft is being silent about the whole thing, only letting slip the fact that any smartphone-type device will be an "ultimate mobile" device that's "different" from anything that anyone else is doing.

Thanks for visiting! Would you do us a favor? If you think it's worth a few seconds, please like our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter. It would mean a lot to us. Thank you.

You need to check out the new OnePlus 5 before buying any other Android smartphone

oneplus 5 BI Review 4x3Business Insider

The new OnePlus 5 is here — and it's mighty impressive.

In fact, you should get a good, hard look at the OnePlus 5 before buying any other Android smartphone for two reasons: It's an excellent premium smartphone, and it's cheaper than other premium smartphones from big companies like Apple, Samsung, and LG.

The OnePlus 5 starts at $479 for the base model, which is $165 less than the base iPhone 7 and $240 less than the base Galaxy S8.

With the OnePlus 5's cheaper price tag comes fewer features than the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8, but the OnePlus 5 helped me realize that most of those extra features are superfluous and don't necessarily contribute to a phone's appeal.

The OnePlus 5 is available to preorder on Tuesday and will be available to buy on June 27.

Google Play’s new feature for Samsung phones isn't so exclusive

Spotify's personalized Discover playlists are incredibly popular; as of last year, over 40 million users had listened to almost 5 billion Discover Weekly songs. While this is a great new feature, it's a little puzzling why Google wouldn't want to make this playlist available to all subscribers, using it as a lure to bring in more listeners who currently use other services. It seems like a bad idea to make such a potentially popular feature exclusive only to a small percentage of Google Play listeners.

Or is it? There are reports on Reddit that users have been able to add the New Release Radio station to their libraries when using the Google Play web interface. One of our own Engadget editors tried this trick and was able to access the playlist on an iPhone, Android device and on the web. We've reached out to Google and Samsung on the exclusivity of this deal and will update when we have a comment.

It's unclear what exactly is happening here, and whether the ability to access the playlist from non-Samsung devices is a bug or an intentional workaround for Google Play listeners. However, anything that helps users wade through the countless new music releases every week is welcome news, so here's hoping that this playlist isn't, in fact, a Samsung exclusive.

Vivo Might Be The First To Release A Smartphone With Fingerprint Sensor In Display

Samsung and Apple are both developing an in-display fingerprint sensor for their line of smartphones, but it looks like a Chinese brand might beat them to the punch. A new report claims that the Chinese phone maker Vivo might be the first to release a smartphone with that kind of technology.

This is according to Jiutang Pan, a Chinese analyst that has a reputation for tracking the Chinese mobile supply chain. Pan says that Vivo could release a smartphone with a fingerprint sensor embedded right in the device's display in the next few months, according to Android Authority.

Pan also shared a video on his Weibo page showing the technology working on one of Vivo's prototype smartphones. The four-second clip shows him unlocking the phone by simply placing his thumb on the bottom part of the display.

Vivo PrototypeThe prototype Vivo phone with the embedded fingerprint sensor as seen on Jiutang Pan's video on Weibo. Photo: Jiutang pan

The video shows that he places his thumb on the part of the screen where a fingerprint logo is seen. It wasn't made clear if the in-display fingerprint sensor will only work on one part of the Vivo device's display, or if it could be customized.

The analyst also said that Vivo will be launching a new phone on June 28, and it's possible that it will be the first smartphone to feature the embedded fingerprint scanner, according to GSM Arena. If Pan's analysis is true, the Vivo would be the first phone maker to commercialize the new technology that everyone initially thought that Samsung or Apple would accomplish first.

IBT reported just last week that Samsung won't be adding this kind of tech for the Galaxy Note 8. An anonymous Samsung official said that the company decided not to include it because of "technical limitations such as security."

Samsung also failed to fully develop the embedded fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S8, which shipped back in April with a rear-mounted sensor. In March, an anonymous source said that Samsung decided to place the fingerprint sensor on the back of the Galaxy S8 "at the last minute." The source also claimed that Samsung poured its resources in the tech's development, only to be met with "frustrating" results.

As for Apple, the company has already been granted patents for a phone with a bezel-less design and an embedded Touch ID sensor on the display. Majority of fans already believe that Apple's iPhone 8 will have an in-display fingerprint sensor when it's revealed this September. Pan himself also believes the same thing, claiming that Apple will be the first foreign (outside China) manufacturer to accomplish this tech, according to Mashable.

Vivo might not be as popular as Apple or Samsung, but the company is selling a lot of phones. Gartner's research from last month did show that Vivo is the fifth largest manufacturer of smartphones in terms of global shipments. Vivo was able to sell 26 million units just during the first quarter of 2017.

Aside from Vivo, other Chinese manufacturers appear to be stepping up their game as well. ETNews claims in a separate report that Xiaomi and Huawei are both trying to apply the in-display fingerprint scanner tech on their phones as well. Huawei might include it next year for the Huawei P11.

LG G7 Smartphone May Be Launch Sooner Than Expected

Here's a rumor for any LG fans out there — the G7, successor to the G6, may be released as early as January 2018. This is crazy news considering the G6 just came out in March. It seems a little fast, but then again, that's our modern technological culture.

According to The Investor, LG has already started R&D on the G7 as of last month to anticipate such an early release.

An LG spokesperson had this to say when The Investor asked for comment:

Nothing has been decided on the launch schedule of the upcoming phones— Unnamed LG Spokesperson

PR at its finest. At least G7 users should be seeing things clearly. Rumor has it that the phone will ship with an OLED display, following the trend among smartphone manufacturers. The G6, even with its large screen, is an LCD display, so this would be a welcome change.

Are you excited for the G7, or are you holding out for one of the other heavily-rumored smartphones? Wherever your tech-allegiances lie, stay up-to-date with us here at Gadget Hacks.

PRESS RELEASE: Over one million new mobile internet users added per day

    Ericsson HQ, Kista

    Ericsson HQ, Kista

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) foresees continued rapid growth of mobile connectivity as global mobile data traffic increases to eight times its current level by 2022.

This traffic is the equivalent of:* The population of Spain streaming HD video 24 hours per day for a month* A single subscriber streaming HD video continuously for 3.55 million years* 31 billion hours of continuous HD video streaming

For the next six years, nearly 2.6 billion new subscribers will be added to mobile broadband networks – enough to fill a European championship soccer stadium (with capacity of 50,000) 20 times each day. As many people went to Times Square in New York to welcome in the new year for 2017.

The latest collection of statistics about the growth of subscribers and data traffic in mobile networks is presented in the June edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report. It shows the highest year-on-year mobile data growth globally since 2013, led by massive growth in India, and highlights the underlying need for mobile data.

The use of smartphones and easy access to mobile internet services comprise a major part of the traffic numbers. Ericsson analyzes "smartphone mobile data traffic" within "mobile data traffic" to illustrate this trend more clearly. By the end of 2022, total smartphone mobile data traffic will have increased 9X, reaching 66 ExaBytes per month.

Niklas Heuveldop, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Technology and Emerging Business, Ericsson, says: "Based on measurements made in hundreds of mobile networks, the Ericsson Mobility Report data truly illustrates the tremendous underlying growth in the industry. 4G subscriptions are increasing faster than ever, Voice over LTE uptake is accelerating and traffic growth has reached levels we have not seen since 2013.

"I am particularly excited to see the industry's major steps to progress network evolution, including the approval of the Non-Standalone 5G New Radio (NR) that will enable early 5G deployments. According to our forecast we anticipate that this will lead to more than half a billion 5G subscriptions and a population coverage 15 percent by 2022."

On industry trends, the Mobility Report features articles on Internet for all, massive IoT coverage in cities and remote operation of vehicles with 5G.

LTE BECOMING MOST PERVASIVE TECHNOLOGY IN HISTORY

In 2018, LTE (4G) will overtake GSM as the largest access technology by number of subscriptions. The speed with which this technology has been rolled out and adopted is unprecedented. It has taken only five years for LTE to cover 2.5 billion people, compared to eight years for WCDMA/HSPA, or 3G. In the first quarter of this year alone, 250 million new LTE subscriptions were added.

While LTE uptake is driven by demand for improved user experience and faster networks, 5G deployment will also be driven by the need for enhanced mobile broadband capabilities as well as industry solutions for efficiency and automation. 5G will be the one network to support a diversity of use cases.

More than half a billion 5G subscriptions are expected to be activated by 2022, not including IoT connections.

5G is then expected to cover around 15 percent of the world's population.

Nokia Smartphone Drops By FCC, Could Be The Mighty Nokia 9 With 8 GB RAM: US Release Imminent?

A new smartphone from HMD Global Oy made its way to the FCC sporting model number TA-1004, and it could be none other than the rumored Nokia 9 powerhouse.

Nokia was once a great force on the mobile market and it's still famous worldwide for its tough, durable handsets, but it lagged behind in the smartphone race. It spent years making Windows Phone smartphones exclusively for Microsoft and watched its glory days become a distant memory as rivals such as Apple and Samsung soared, but it's making a comeback.

After breaking free from Microsoft's hold, Nokia found itself a new home and it's now dedicated to making Android smartphones. Finnish company HMD Global secured the rights to release Nokia-branded smartphones for a decade and it's already launched a few handsets, with more to come.

The Nokia smartphones released recently generated some buzz, but they were not exactly powerful flagships. The Nokia 9, however, is shaping up as a true powerhouse and it seems that it might make its debut in the United States soon enough.

    Nokia 9 At FCC?

The FCC listing for the HMD Global device with model number TA-1004 confirms that the smartphone supports both GSM and CDMA bands, which means that it will play nice with all major U.S. carriers. The FCC further reveals that the handset supports Bluetooth 4.2, albeit the listing offers no spec details or other intriguing information.

Nevertheless, the Nokia 9 has been starring in a number of leaks, rumors, benchmarks and reports, which painted a pretty clear picture of what to expect. If the leaks turn out to be accurate, Nokia's upcoming flagship will be a beastly device ready to take on the most high-end rivals.

    Nokia 9 Rumored Specs

The Nokia 9 is expected to pack the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, Adreno 540 graphics, and a whopping 8 GB of RAM, according to a GFXBench listing. If this is true, the Nokia 9 will likely be the first smartphone to boast 8 GB of RAM. Previous rumors, however, hinted at just 4 GB of RAM for the Nokia 9, so it remains to be seen which will turn out to be accurate. HMD could be working on multiple configurations for the Nokia 9, offering different RAM and storage options to accommodate various needs and budgets.

Other Nokia 9 rumored specs include a 5.3-inch QHD display, a dual rear camera setup with 13-megapixel sensors, USB Type-C, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The smartphone is expected to run a near-stock Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box. HMD previously said that it's not interested in coming up with its own mobile UI to put on top of Android.

The Nokia 9 would follow the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6, all of which run Android. None of these handsets made it to the United States so far, but the flagship Nokia 9 is expected to see a release stateside and the FCC documentation supports this claim.

The FCC is typically among the last stops a device has to make before it's ready to hit the market, so the Nokia 9 could make its debut soon.

No official information is available at this point regarding the Nokia 9 release, but more details should come to light shortly. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, but take everything with a grain of salt until it's official.

Apple-Android War for Premium Smartphone Market Share Intensifies

What's Causing All the Tension between Apple and Its Suppliers? PART 6 OF 21

By Paige Tanner  | Jun 9, 2017 7:13 pm EDT Apple's attempt to convert Android users into iPhone users

Apple (AAPL) is currently preparing for the 10th addition of its popular iPhone. However, all the features being introduced in the iPhone 8 already exist in other Android phones. That's because Google (GOOG) tied up with several handset makers and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to develop better phones with a variety of designs.

Apple-Android War for Premium Smartphone Market Share Intensifies

Google's mobile OS (operating system) Android, which it acquired in 2005, is used in 81.0% of the world's smartphones, whereas Apple's iOS (iPhone Operating System) is used in only 18.0%, according to Gartner. Apple is now looking to convert Android users into iOS users ahead of the iPhone 8 release.

Apple launched a dedicated website called Switch that highlights the benefits of the iPhone and details the easy process of transferring data from an Android phone to an iPhone. Google launched a similar website detailing the process of transferring iPhone data to a Google Pixel.

This war could intensify as a new competitor emerges in the premium smartphone market.

A new competitor emerges in the premium smartphone market

Former Google executive Andy Rubin began a startup called Essential in 2014. The startup is set to launch its first two devices: an Android smartphone and a home automation system.

The Essential Phone has a 5.71-inch edge-to-edge bezel-less display, similar to the one that is expected to be featured in the iPhone 8. Like Samsung's (SSNLF) Galaxy S8, the Essential Phone is expected to run on Qualcomm's (QCOM) Snapdragon 835 processor.

The Essential Phone is expected to have a titanium body, which is better than the aluminum body of Apple's iPhone 7 Plus and the glass and metal body of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. Some of the similarities between the Essential Phone and the iPhone 7 series are dual rear cameras, no headphone jack, no water or dust resistance support, no home button on the front of the phone, and a fingerprint scanner.

The Essential Phone is priced at $699 and is unlocked, allowing users to run it on the carrier network of their choice. It remains to be seen if the new Essential Android smartphone succeeds in taking share from Apple in the premium smartphone market.

In the meantime, Apple is still the leader and largest customer for the semiconductor industry. Apple is leveraging its strong position to negotiate its desired terms with suppliers. This is creating a tense environment in the smartphone semiconductor space. We'll look at that next.

Nokia Android smartphone outed ahead of 2014 release?

Nokia's return to the Android smartphone market has reportedly been confirmed by the emergence of a leaked photograph of a mystery handset.

The device outed by Evleaks is said to be in development under the codename of Normandy, running a forked version of the Google operating system similar to Amazon's Kindle Fire software.

Nokia is allegedly re-entering the Android market with the Normandy

The phone's user interface will not resemble traditional Android but will be compatible with Google Play apps, according to The Verge.

Nokia is said to be targeting the lower end of the market with the Normandy, an area it already caters for with its Asha line of budget smartphones.

However, it is unclear whether Microsoft's recent acquisition of Nokia will impact on any Android-based ventures, given that Android is a competitor to Windows Phone 8.

The report claims that the Normandy will be released in 2014.

Android O Release Date Expected In August Ahead Of Pixel Smartphones Updates

Google's upcoming Android O software could release in early August, according to David Ruddock of Android Police. The blogger shared on Twitter Wednesday that the new operating system could launch during the first or second week of August, detailing that roll out could take place earlier than the release of Android 7.0 Nougat.

Google showcased several aspects of Android O at its I/O Conference in May. Among highlighted features includes faster roll outs, battery improvements, faster boot times, updated emoji, smart text selection, picture-in-pictures, updates to the home screen and the night light feature, and a new initiative called Android Go, which brings features of the new system to low-end Android devices.

Read: Android O Beta Release Date: 9 Features Announced At Google I/O 2017

Additionally, Google announced that Kotlin will now be an official Android programming language. Other Google announcements included Google Lens, Google Assistant for iPhone, Daydream 2.0, a standalone VR headset, updates to Google Photos, Google Home, Daydream and Tango, among others.

Currently, Android O is in public beta. The final beta will hit Google devices in July before the official release during the third quarter.

Read: Kotlin, Google Lens And Everything Showcased At Google I/O 2017

Android O has not been officially named; however, there have been indications, within Google code, which suggested the version number will be Android 8.0. Several hints suggest the Android O codename might be Oreo. Google even teased the name by offering Oreos packets as snacks during Google I/O. However, many consider that the tech giant could be attempting to hide the real name of Android O.

Several smartphones have already been confirmed for Android O updates, including the OnePlus 3 and 3T and the Nokia 6.

Google's second generation Pixel smartphones are expected to release after the Android O roll out, likely sometime in October. Rumors suggest Google may announce three Pixel smartphones, which may all run the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip. They will be the first devices to officially run Android O.

New Microsoft update is bricking smartphones

Typically, being a member of an insiders program is a good thing. As an insider, most likely you will be able to experience new items before the public can. Sometimes, there's also a chance to receive exclusive deals that non-members will never know about.

Microsoft offers a program like this, it's called the Windows Insider Program. Unfortunately for some of its members, an update just went horribly wrong!

How a Windows Insider update went south

The Windows Insider Program is an optional service provided by Microsoft to let users experience the next version of Windows before public release. The program targets early adopters and the 'enthusiast' crowd who enjoy beta testing new software.

What's happening now is, Microsoft recently released a flawed update to insiders by mistake. The update is forcing Windows smartphone users into a never-ending reboot loop, essentially 'bricking' their gadget. The following message appears on affected Windows smartphones:

Image: Example of the never-ending rebooting loop from Windows Insider update. (Source: Microsoft)

In a blog post regarding this incident, Microsoft said, "If you received this build (from RS_IoT) on Mobile: This build will *not* install on your device. If you installed this build, your device will be stuck in a reboot loop and the only way to recover is to use the Windows Device Recovery Tool and re-flash. After re-flashing, you can join the Windows Insider Program again on your device and choose your ring and be back on the right update path."

How to fix flawed Windows update

Microsoft gave instructions for users on how to fix this issue. Follow these steps:

"If your device has downloaded this build but has not installed the build (you see either an 'install' or 'Restart now' button under Phone update) - you will have to do a device reset via Settings >> System >> About (Do a backup via Settings >> Update & security >> Backup FIRST) and then check your Windows Insider Program settings to ensure you're on the right ring.

"If you are not a Windows Insider, your device may have seen one of these builds offered. However, these builds will not install on devices that are not joined to the Windows Insider Program."

This update was also sent by mistake to Windows Insiders for PC, although it doesn't seem to be as critical of a mistake for them. The company said this build may include issues that impact PC usability, more so than normal builds.

The user can either wait for Microsoft to publish a newer build or roll-back to the previous build via Settings >> Update & security >> Recovery.

Note: Users have up to 10 days to roll-back and will only work if they did not do Disk Cleanup to remove the previous Windows installation.

Nokia 3, 5 and 6 smartphones set for India launch on June 13 HMD Global is likely to launch Nokia 3, 5 and 6 smartphone in the country. The company has sent across an invite scheduled for June 13. Media speculates that it will announce the launch of much anticipated Nokia smartphones: Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3.

Android O Confirmed For All Nokia Smartphones Launched Earlier This Year

Nokia announced three Android-powered handsets at this year's Mobile World Congress event in February. These devices — the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 — are set to make their market debut in the U.S. by end June.

The three smartphones are also in line to benefit from the Android O update. It is worth noting that Nokia 6 is already available in a few Asian countries and it runs on Android 7 Nougat.

Upcoming Nokia Handsets To Get Android O Update?

The Nokia smartphones will come with Android Nougat OS on launch, but a spokesperson for HMD Global confirmed that all the upcoming handsets will also receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update when Google decides to launch it.

"The smartphones will get the Android O update once the new release is available from Google for their OEM partners, the same way HMD Global is committed to the monthly Android security updates," the spokesperson revealed.

However, the Android O platform, which was revealed at Google's I/O event in 2017, is slated to release sometime in the third quarter of the year. So, the Alphabet-owned company will officially release the next-gen OS around September or October. It is unlikely that it will roll out to the three Nokia handsets immediately.

It usually takes a couple of months for an Android update to reach unlocked smartphones. The updates take even longer to reach carrier-bound devices, which indicates that the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 handsets will not get the Android O update before December.

However, the fact that HMD has confirmed that the update would be supported for these handsets will delight most fans. Moreover, the upcoming smartphones will start retailing with the stock Android Nougat version installed, which should make the subsequent upgrade to the newer Android OS easier for users.

    What Will Android O Bring?

The successor to the highly successful Android Nougat, the Android O or Android Oreo, will feature several improvements over the last version. One of the features which will be added to Android devices through the new OS is the inclusion of Autofill password support. People using password managers would be able to pick one program, which would allow it to autofill the password for all of the users' accounts.

Android O promises to also bring significant improvements to the device's battery life by limiting the functions taking place in the background.

Google also said that it will implement better shortcuts for the device's lock screen, which means that users will be able to customize the lock display to navigate more of their apps.

These are just some of the features of the Android O, which is scheduled to be released later in 2017. With these features in tow, the Nokia devices will perhaps be among the first smartphones to get the Android O update.

Veterans 360 Inc. Launches the First Transition Support Smartphone Application

San Diego, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/02/2017 --Veterans 360 has launched T-Rapp, a veteran centric smartphone application (Android/iOS) designed to connect today's young veterans to the information and support that they need, when and how they need it.

Rick Collins Founder of Veterans 360 notes: "There is no shortage of support for our veterans but we are simply not connecting them to that support or we are sitting back and waiting for them to come to us. Amazingly, we still rely on printed literature, PowerPoint presentations, web sites and 800 numbers to guide our young veterans through an already challenging transition process. Today, veterans are not even provided with the most basic smartphone application to help them navigate the large gap between military service, the veterans support arena and their 45,000+ member organizations. That is about to change."

Veterans 360 is addressing this significant weakness in the transition support process. Veterans 360 has bee n able to leverage their experience in the transition and mental health arenas to design an easy to use application with an intuitive administrator interface. T-Rapp uses the latest technology and can manage documents, information sharing, push communications, social media, chat, messenger and location aware features.

Veterans 360 needs your support to enable wide spread acceptance of the application. Visit their crowdfunding campaign to learn more and provide financial assistance to keep this important work moving forward. (https://give.classy.org/t-rapp)

T-Rapp has received very positive feedback from Government agencies in the US and Australia. Also, agreements have been reached and presentations made to a who's who of US non-profits, veterans support teams and first responder departments in the spirit of collaboration and information sharing.

Every T-Rapp download that connects a veteran to information and or resources provides us all with a chance to save a li fe.

About Veterans 360 Inc.Veterans 360 Inc. is a San Diego based veteran centric 501(C)(3) # 45-3713823 and a Guidestar Gold Partner. Veterans 360 has been actively supporting young veterans since 2011. T-Rapp is a NOT-FOR-PROFIT application.

Need a phone until the new iPhone release? This model is under $200 right now

Need a phone until the new iPhone release? This model is under $200 right now (Photo: Reviewed.com)

    — Our editors review and recommend products to help you buy the stuff you need. If you make a purchase by clicking one of our links, we may earn a small share of the revenue. Our picks and opinions are independent from USATODAY's newsroom and any business incentives.

Not everyone wants a phone that's laden down with bells and whistles. Some of us simple want something we can call, text and maybe check the weather or our email now and then. Or maybe your current phone is on death's doorstep but you really want to save your money for the next iPhone. Seems silly to spend $600+ in either case.

That's where the Moto G5 Plus comes in. This Motorola smartphone is a bargain at its usual price of $229.99, but right now Amazon Prime members can get it for just $184.99. (If you're not a Prime member, sign up for a free 30-day trial to take advantage of the sale.)

While we have yet to test the 5th generation Moto G Plus, we've reviewed previous iterations of Moto smartphones and found them to be perfectly functional and, though far from the best available, they're good for the price. Here's what we know about the G5 Plus:

    PROS

The Moto G5 Plus runs on the latest version of Google Android (Nougat), and it's unlocked and compatible with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

Plus, for $185, you get 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage on the phone, and there's a MicroSD reader to easily expand your storage. The top-rated 32GB MicroSD card is only $13 on Amazon, so it's easy and cheap to get more storage,

The 64GB model, which is also on sale for $229.99 for Prime members ($299.99 usually), has twice the RAM if you want improved phone speed. But if you don't care about speed, the 32GB model is the better deal.

The G5 plus also has a fingerprint reader for added security, a large 1080p display, and an FM tuner built in so you can listen to music without eating up your data.

    CONS

There are ads on the lock screen and Amazon apps pre-loaded onto the phone to offset the lower cost. But you can pay the extra $50ish any time down the line to remove them if they really bother you.

The phone has a 12MP camera, but don't expect it to deliver high-quality photos like higher-end smartphones. The hardware simply isn't as cutting edge as what Samsung and Apple are using.

It's also not as fast as other, more expensive phones. Your email might take longer to sync. Photos might not send as quickly in texts, and you might not be able to stream Netflix outside of WiFi.

Is this the right phone for you?

All that being said, this phone might be perfect if you (or someone you know) falls into any of these categories:

  • Clumsy and constantly breaking and replacing phones
  • First-time smartphone owner (e.g. your teenager)
  • Fine with a phone that's "good enough"
  • Saving up for the new iPhone or the Samsung S8
  • Need something now that won't break the bank
  • Prices are accurate at the time this article was published, but may change over time.
