Galaxy S8 release could land as late as April 28, opening door for LG G6 sales

Timing is everything in the high-end smartphone world.

We now have a set-in-stone announce date of March 29 for the Galaxy S8, but the actual release date for the phone hitting retailers is still in flux. A report from VentureBeat claims Samsung may wait just shy of a full month after announcement to release the Galaxy S8 on April 29.

That's a week later than the first expected release of April 21, which in itself is about a week longer than Samsung traditionally takes to get a phone out into the market after announcement. In the past few years, Samsung has done an incredible job of having pre-orders within a week of the launch event, with in-store availability a week after that.

Samsung Galaxy S8

While an extra week in the grand scheme of a 12-18 month phone lifecycle isn't detrimental, it does give LG some hope of piling up G6 sales for just that bit longer without any competition. LG is expected to widely release the new G6 at the start of April, with initial leaks pointing to a U.S. release date of April 7.

Samsung will surely make up the difference in sales in short order, but in either case it means fans of the Galaxy S8 will have to wait just a little bit longer to get their hands on one.

The rise of throwback phones

At the 2017 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, last week, an interesting trend became clear: throwback phones are in.

While devices like tablets and wearables are adapting rapidly, companies like Nokia and BlackBerry have announced that some of their newest phones will look quite familiar.

The return of Nokia 3310

Since the Nokia 3310's release in 2000, it has become one of the most sold phones ever, with 126 million units sold worldwide. Over a decade since it was discontinued, it is coming back.

The iconic phone is returning in both red and yellow, in addition to its original release colors, dark blue and gray. This new phone will have a camera, a voice recorder and an FM radio. According to Bloomberg, Nokia fans should not fret, as the phone will also come loaded with iconic mobile game, Snake.

The return of the QWERTY keyboard

With smartphones that are all screen, QWERTY keyboards are a thing of the past, but BlackBerry seems to think differently. The company currently announced its BlackBerry KEYone that comes with a 4.5-inch display screen will also have a QWERTY keyboard.

Despite the nostalgic design, the phone itself is still high powered, featuring a fingerprint scanner, a programmable keyboard and a Snapdragon 625 processor. Set to be released worldwide in April, the phone's software will be powered by Android instead of BlackBerry's previous operating system.

The return of Motorola

The Motorola RAZR was arguably one of the most iconic phones of the mid-2000s, if not the whole decade. However, since then, Motorola has become something of a ghost.

After attempting to phase out the name of the brand entirely to rename it "Moto by Lenovo", Motorola has decided to jump on the throwback wagon and stick with its name. "Motorola is an iconic brand that symbolized quality and innovation, and it was a bad idea to ditch the name in the first place," said Maribel Lopez, an analyst at Lopez Research to CNET.

With the upcoming release of the Moto Z, it is about time to see if Motorola can make a comeback. (sul/kes)

Windows 10 Creators Update Launching for PCs First, Phones Getting It Thereafter

Microsoft is now working on giving the final touches to Windows 10 Creators Update, as the update is feature-locked and the full focus is on bug fixing and performance improvements, with the launch expected to take place as soon as April for retail users.

The Creators Update is bringing important updates to both PCs and smartphones, and although Microsoft has been trying to keep its devices in sync, it appears that the release won't take place on all devices at the same time.

Since the release of the Creators Update is just around the corner, we've asked Microsoft whether it plans to update all devices at the same time or prioritize the launch on a specific platform. And it appears that between the two, PCs are Microsoft's priority with the Creators Update, so they'll be the first getting the new OS version, while Windows 10 Mobile devices will receive it at a later time. Here's Microsoft's very short statement on this:

"The initial update will be for desktop, but other versions will be available thereafter," a company spokesperson told us.

No target date for phones, but it's probably "soon"

As far as Windows 10 Mobile is concerned, it's not clear when exactly the firm wants to release the Creators Update, but it's once again the "soon" trademark that's already causing so much frustration in the phone community.

Work on Windows 10 Creators Update is expected to be finalized as soon as this month, with insiders obviously to be the first getting the RTM build. Rumor has it that Creators Update could land as version 1703, which is a direct hint at its compiling date, while retail users should get it in April.

Microsoft is yet to announce the launch date of the Windows 10 Creators Update, but there's no doubt that holding back the release for phones a little bit longer after the PC isn't exactly what users sticking with Windows 10 Mobile hoped to hear. We'll find out more about Microsoft's plans for Windows 10 Mobile when the company officially announces the release date of the Creators Update.

If you have the money to spend, then you should first take a look at HTC U Ultra and Huawei P10 Plus, both coming out this March 2017.

First, let's say hello to the U Ultra. This big 5.7-inch smartphone is made for the brilliant U. It reflects U beautifully with its sophisticated new liquid surface. It puts U on top, courtesy of a convenient new Dual Display. It listens to U, adapting sound to your unique hearing. It even learns from U, becoming a companion that evolves to get to know you better over time.

U Ultra is about bringing you all the ultra-experience that you are looking for in a. But don't just take our word for it, check it out yourself below:

  • Android Nougat 7.0
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • Expected March 2017 release date
  • $749 USD price tag
  • Starting with the exterior, U Ultra introduces a new, beautifully contoured, liquid surface that is designed to reflect the best form in you. Hold it up and you will appreciate the phone's symmetrical construction and the way it transforms light as you turn it around. To achieve this extraordinary look, HTC developed an entirely new process where colours bond to the glass in multiple layers to reflect light beautifully - adding brilliance and depth from every angle. The glass is then moulded evenly around the sides and edges, using extreme pressure and heat to mimic the natural surface tension of liquid; folding and bending the surface to create a perfect blend of metal and glass.

Sporting a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super LCD5 screen, U Ultra will bring you a great visual experience. Not only that, it also introduces a second screen which gives you the information you need, at your fingertips. The big screen is extremely great for your daily activities, while the new second screen is perfect for fast, convenient access to the things you use the most - like your top contacts, app shortcuts, event notifications and more. You won't miss out on all the important things in life anymore with this smartphone.

Under the hood of the U Ultra is guaranteed to make your experience things in the fast last by blazing through just about anything that you throw at it. Here we can find the Snapdragon 821 chipset, a fast quad-core Kryo chipset, great graphics and 4GB RAM.

Camera-wise, the U Ultra will be sporting a great camera setup which builds on HTC 10 which was awarded an industry leading DxOMark score of 88; and further improved. You will then be able to capture great photos with less blur, super-fast laser focus and new Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) to catch every moment. You also get bigger pixels for better photos at night, because good things can happen in the dark.

A good amount of internal storage is available with 64GB on-board. Even then, you can easily expand it up to a maximum of 256GB via its microSD slot – so you know that storage won't be a problem.

What could potentially be a problem is with its rather limited 3000 mAh battery that can be found on the U Ultra. If you are a very heavy user, it is best to bring along a power bank just in case.

Last but not least, a good news is in store for the U Ultra with the latest Android Nougat 7.0 OS accompanying its release. This could only bring about the latest features and functions, right out of the box which you can immediately tap into.

Now let's take a look at its rival – the P10 Plus. With the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona underway, it is definitely one of the hottest news to come out from the event.

Check out its specs as per below:

  • 5.5-inch Quad HD IPS-NEO LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1440 x 2560 pixels or ~540 ppi pixel density
  • Metal body
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • HiSilicon Kirin 960 chipset, Octa-core (4x2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A53) processor, Mali-G71 MP8 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • Dual 20MP + 12MP primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, OIS, Leica optics, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash
  • 8MP secondary camera with f/1.9 aperture
  • 64GB internal storage + microSD expansion slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Android Nougat 7.0
  • Non-removable Li-Ion 3750 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Expected March 2017 release date
  • $699 Euro or ~$739 USD price tag
  • There's not much difference now between the two, but the difference is telling enough. Starting off with the P10 Plus's body, it is going to set an industry benchmark for style and craftsmanship with the first hyper diamond-cut finishing on a smartphone, which adds strength and colour to its body. Finishes also available in high gloss and sandblast.

With a 5.5-inch Quad HD screen on the P10 Plus, you can be sure of its amazing image quality. It is just slightly smaller, but every second you spend looking at its screen' the more you will fall in love with it.

In terms of performance, the two are almost on par. Under the hood of the P10 Plus is the high-end Kirin 960 chipset, blazingly fast octa-core processor, great graphics and 4GB RAM. Nothing that would slow it down.

The best part about the P10 Plus will definitely be on its camera side of things. You can now put a portrait studio in your pocket with its great camera ability. The new Leica Dual Camera 2.0 uses precise 3D facial detection, dynamic illumination, and natural portrait enhancements to produce stunning artistic portrait shots in Leica image style. The dual 20MP + 12MP primary camera presents you with 4K shooting, Optical Image Stabilisation and Superior low-light photography. When you see the world more clearly, you get to appreciate how beautiful it is.

An all new 8MP Leica selfie camera captures 2x more light, offering amazing self-portraits, whether day or night. HUAWEI P10 even senses groufies and automatically switches to wide-angle shots when more people enter the picture. Capture unique selfies in Leica image style.

Battery-wise, the P10 Plus will be powered by a 3750 mAh battery which should be more than capable of holding its own for at least a day or two in between charging.

Finally, the latest Android Nougat 7.0 will be available right out of the box. This means you will get the best software combining with the best hardware available out there.

    Conclusion:

HTC U Ultra is going to present a big challenge in the flagship space. Great 5.7-inch size with great display, great hardware, great camera and great storage is in store for you with this smartphone. Although a rather small battery could limit you slightly though.

HTC U Play is already available for pre-order for $749 USD and is said to be released in March 2017. You can choose from Brilliant Black, Cosmetic Pink, Ice White and Sapphire Blue colors.

Elsewhere with Huawei P10 Plus, it is going to be a definitive camera smartphone in 2017. If photography is your passion, and you want the convenience of a smartphone but loaded with professional camera capabilities – then by all means this is it. Packed with features and functions, you won't need a digital camera or even a DSLR.

Huawei P10 Plus had just been launched and will be available very soon for $699 Euro or ~$739 USD. It will be available in Ceramic White, Dazzling Blue, Dazzling Gold, Graphite Black, Mystic Silver, Rose Gold and Greenery.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Named Best Smartphone At Mobile World Congress 2017

Maybe the first thing to get excited about is the potential for a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Nougat release next month.

But the upgrades would not be enough for the company to close the gap with its main rivals, Samsung and Apple, said Thomas Husson, consumer devices analyst at Forrester Research. For connectivity, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ has 4G, NFC, WiFi (a/b/g/n/ac), Bluetooth 4.2 LE, micro USB 2.0 port, and Global Positioning System with GLONASS and Beidou.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has been named the best smartphone of 2016. However, that did not stop fans from speculating that a new Samsung Galaxy Note 8 might come out in 2017.

Samsung, the world's largest mobile phone maker, had no device of its own to show at the week-long Mobile World Congress, the phone industry's largest annual trade fair, in Barcelona in northeastern Spain, its usual showcase.

"We are honoured to be recognised for our craftsmanship in design and innovation with the Galaxy S7 Edge", said Junho Park, Samsung Electronics vice-president of global product strategy for its mobile communications business.

Telstra's just released the Android 7.0 ("Nougat") update for Telstra customers with the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones.

Stay tuned for more Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge updates.

Galaxy S8 fans won't have to decide between choosing the pricier "edge" model over a standard flat screen, like the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

    .

Samsung revealed this week that it will launch the Galaxy S8 at a special event in NY on 29th March. The update brings software version G900VVRS2DQB2 and like the Note 5, this update should simply bump the Android security level to the latest month of February, but don't expect any major changes or introductions in form of new features.
