iPhone 6S release date 2015: Will larger smartphone require new protective case?

The Apple iPhone 6S release is expected on September 9. The new phone's on sale date should follow soon after.Apple

As the iPhone 6S release nears, Apple's biggest iPhone to date may cause owners of the popular iPhone 6 to get a new protective case.

Yes, in smartphones, size matters – even when just a couple of millimeters are involved.

The new iPhone 6S, the model widely expected to be released for public viewing by Apple this Wednesday in San Francisco, will be slightly thicker than last year's iPhone 6, according to reports.

(Apple is also expected to release the iPhone 6S Plus.)

The thickness won't be noticeable likely by users since it is only expanded from 7.08 mm from 6.9 mm, according to Mac Rumors. But every little bit matters when it comes to fitting your case around the phone.

The slightly thicker iPhone 6S is likely due to new aluminum used for the shell and thickening to help stop the bending problem some people have had with the iPhone 6. Some maybe this will end bend-gate drama upon the iPhone 6S release.

The new aluminum is expected to be the same 7000 aluminum uses for Apple Watch Sport editions.

The new iPhone 6S will also likely be very slightly taller, according to reports. Yet again, it shouldn't be noticeable to users – unless the old case doesn't fit. MacRumors reported this height difference claiming to have leaked photos of the new iPhone.

"The new photos also reveal slight increases for the height and width of the iPhone 6s, with the device measuring 138.19 mm tall and 67.68 mm wide, compared to 138.1 mm and 67.0 mm for the corresponding measurements on the iPhone 6," MacRumors reported.

If true these will be the new dimensions of the iPhone 6S vs. the iPhone 6 released in 2014:

So, does that mean your iPhone 6 case won't fit your iPhone 6S case?

"On a percentage basis, the thickness would see the biggest increase of nearly 3 percent, matching the iPhone 6 Plus thickness. That increase could be enough to prevent some tight-fitting iPhone 6 cases from fitting the 6s, but many cases should have enough wiggle room to accommodate the new models," MacRumors reported.

Apple's iPhone 6S is expected to be on sale within 10 days after Wednesday's announcement event. Preorders are likely to begin two days later – on this coming Friday.
