Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Named Best Smartphone At Mobile World Congress 2017

Maybe the first thing to get excited about is the potential for a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Nougat release next month.

But the upgrades would not be enough for the company to close the gap with its main rivals, Samsung and Apple, said Thomas Husson, consumer devices analyst at Forrester Research. For connectivity, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ has 4G, NFC, WiFi (a/b/g/n/ac), Bluetooth 4.2 LE, micro USB 2.0 port, and Global Positioning System with GLONASS and Beidou.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has been named the best smartphone of 2016. However, that did not stop fans from speculating that a new Samsung Galaxy Note 8 might come out in 2017.

Samsung, the world's largest mobile phone maker, had no device of its own to show at the week-long Mobile World Congress, the phone industry's largest annual trade fair, in Barcelona in northeastern Spain, its usual showcase.

"We are honoured to be recognised for our craftsmanship in design and innovation with the Galaxy S7 Edge", said Junho Park, Samsung Electronics vice-president of global product strategy for its mobile communications business.

Telstra's just released the Android 7.0 ("Nougat") update for Telstra customers with the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones.

Stay tuned for more Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge updates.

Galaxy S8 fans won't have to decide between choosing the pricier "edge" model over a standard flat screen, like the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

.

Samsung revealed this week that it will launch the Galaxy S8 at a special event in NY on 29th March. The update brings software version G900VVRS2DQB2 and like the Note 5, this update should simply bump the Android security level to the latest month of February, but don't expect any major changes or introductions in form of new features.

Nokia kicked off its MWC 2017 press conference talking about its Ozo camera and its acquisition of Withings, particularly with regards to what this means for the company's portfolio, with smartwatches, fitness trackers and smart scales to begin carrying the Nokia name this summer. Which is great, but, we really just care about the phones. So on to the good stuff...

What did Nokia announce at MWC 2017?

Earlier this year Nokia announced its Nokia 150 feature phone and China-only Nokia 6 smartphone, with the latter selling out in just 23 seconds. But Nokia wants to become the biggest smartphone player in the market worldwide. It is looking to the next chapter, and during its 26 February MWC 2017 event Nokia and partner HMD Global announced three new Android phones.

Nokia Android phones are said to be different to rival Android phones in three main ways: through Nokia's relentless focus on the everyday experience, whether that is seen in the display or the camera; through its premium design and build quality that is present no matter where in the line-up a model sits; and through its use of the purest version of Android you have seen, with monthly security updates, fast Android platform updates and the implementation of the Google Assistant across the range.

Nokia 6

The first phone announced by Nokia is one with which we're already familiar, the previously China-only Nokia 6, which will now be going global at 229 Euros. There will also be a Nokia 6 Arte Special Edition, which has a piano black gloss finish and more memory, and will retail at 299 Euros. It will be available globally in Q2 2017.

The Nokia 6 is a unibody Android Nougat phone crafted from a single block of Series 6000 aluminium. This is paired with a 5.5in full-HD laminated in-cell display with protective 2.5D Gorilla Glass.

Inside HMD has fitted the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor, along with the Adreno 505 GPU, 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 64GB of storage and a 3,000mAh battery.

The company draws particular attention to the Nokia 6's multimedia functionality, quoting dual amplifiers that deliver a 6dB louder sound than a regular amp, giving higher voice, deeper bass and unmatched clarity, and Dolby Atmos that creates powerful, moving audio that seems to flow all around users.

There's also a 16Mp, f/2.0 primary camera with phase-detection autofocus, and an 8Mp selfie camera.

Nokia 5

Second, there is the Nokia 5, a more compact version of the Nokia 6 but with a 5.2in HD IPS display, retailing at 189 Euros. It will be available globally in Q2 2017.

There's a 13Mp camera with autofocus and a dual-tone flash at the rear and an 8Mp wide-angle selfie camera at the front. Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage (plus microSD support up to 128GB). It supports both 4G connectivity and NFC, and has a Micro-USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack. The battery is rated at 3000mAh.

The Nokia 5 comes in Tempered Blue, Silver, Matte Black and Copper, and measures 149.7x72.5x8.05mm.

Nokia 3

Third, there is the cheaper Nokia 3, which has the same flagship design but retails at 139 Euros. It is also crafted from a single block of 6000-series aluminium, and has a 5in HD IPS laminated display that is bright and clear, and a wide-angle 8Mp selfie camera. It will be available globally in Q2 2017.

The Nokia 3 comes in Silver White, Matte Black, Tempered Blue and Copper White, and measures 143.4x71.4x8.48mm. It runs a 1.3GHz MediaTek MTK6737 quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, plus there's MicroSD support up to 128GB.

Cameras are rated at 8Mp, both front and back, and there's an integrated 2650mAh battery keeping it all going. There's a Micro-USB port and headphone jack, plus support for 4G and NFC.

Nokia 3310

The one all Nokia fans have been waiting for, though, is the rumoured comeback of the Nokia 3310. It now offers 22 hours of talk time - 10 times more than the original - or one month on standby. It comes in gloss Warm Red and Yellow, and a matte Dark Blue and Grey, and measures 115.6x51x12.8mm.

The Nokia 3310 also comes with the Snake game and Nokia ringtone, what more do you need to know?!

Seriously though, expect 16MB of storage (yes that is MB and not a typo, but with up to 32GB via microSD), a 2.4in curved colour display and a new 2Mp camera.

But isn't Nokia dead?

Once the biggest and best-known mobile phone manufacturer, following some tough competition from iPhone and Android Nokia in 2011 made the fatal mistake of agreeing to produce only Windows phones. In 2014 it packed up its mobile phone game and sold its business to Microsoft. Fast-forward to 2017, and with Android onboard, this could be the Nokia comeback we've been waiting for.

It's still not quite Nokia as we know it, since Finnish brand HMD Global currently owns the rights to develop, build and sell Nokia-branded phones - although it does so with Nokia's input.

New Nokia Android phones UK release date rumours: When are the new Nokia Android phones coming out?

Nokia has confirmed that the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 will be available globally in Q2 2017. As soon as an exact release date is known we will update this article.

The rumoured Nokia flagship will arrive later in the year. (Since it is said to be running the Snapdragon 835 processor, it cannot launch before the Samsung Galaxy S8 which is expected to go on sale 21 April.)

New Nokia Android phones UK price: How much are the new Nokia Android phones?

Nokia has not yet announced UK pricing for its Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6, but it has announced the prices in Euros.

The Nokia 6 is the most expensive of these three affordable phones, costing 229 Euros (£194), while a limited edition Nokia 6 R Special Edition will cost 299 Euros (£253).

The Nokia 5 will cost 189 Euros (£160), and the Nokia 3 139 Euros (£117).

The new Nokia 3310 will cost €49 (£41). You can pre-order the Nokia 3310 from MobileFun today at £50.

Nokia P1 rumours

The Nokia P1 is what's expected to be the upcoming Nokia flagship, which will run the Snapdragon 835 processor and launch after MWC 2017.

A flagship phone referred to as the Nokia P1 was originally thought to arrive at MWC 2017 with the top-end Snapdragon 835 processor. We now know this isn't possible, since the Galaxy S8 has the exclusive on this chip and isn't being unveiled until the end of March. So, if a flagship Nokia is announced at MWC 2017 it will be running the Snapdragon 821, not the 835. It is still possible a Snapdragon 835 Nokia will launch later in the year, of course.

The Nokia P1 popped up on Weibo as the subject of discussion by what appeared to be Nokia China. It said the phone would arrive at MWC 2017 with the Snapdragon 835 processor. Unfortunately, HMD has since confirmed that this was a fake account.

Despite the fake account, it is believed that the Nokia P1 is very much in the making and coming soon as Nokia's top-end Android phone. It's said to run Android Nougat and come with a 5.3in display with Gorilla Glass 5 and IP57 protection. As well as the aforementioned Snapdragon 835, the Nokia P1 is expected to get 6GB of RAM. A Carl Zeiss 22.6Mp camera could be found at the rear, and a 3,500mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0 inside.

The Nokia P1 is thought to be priced at around $800 or £634 with 128GB of storage, and $950 or £753 with 256GB.

Concept Creator has released a new YouTube video (shown below) revealing what the Nokia P1 might look like based on leaks. It reveals a metal frame, hybrid dual-SIM slot, Carl Zeiss camera, a front home button with embedded fingerprint scanner and a 5.3in display.

We've captured some stills from the video below.

Nokia 8 rumours

Following CES 2017 Total Tech posted a video on YouTube that it said revealed the Nokia 8 or 'Nokia Supreme'. Total Tech claimed Qualcomm was showing the smartphone at its booth at CES, and captured the below footage.

However, this is most definitely not the Nokia 8. Qualcomm denies showing the Nokia 8 at CES 2017. "We do not disclose details of our reference design. We've seen a few stories rumouring what we demonstrated in our CES booth to be a Nokia device. Those reports are not accurate, our 835 demos were on our own reference design devices, which we use to demo our latest Snapdragon SOCs every year," said a Qualcomm spokesperson.

Rumoured specifications for the Nokia 8 include a 5.7in Quad-HD SuperAMOLED screen, 12- and 24Mp cameras, a powerful Snapdragon processor and lots of storage.

Concept Creator offers the following speculative video:

For all we know the Nokia P1 and Nokia 8 could be the same phone. Come back soon for more details as we hear them.

Samsung Galaxy S8 release dateSAMUSNG

Samsung Galaxy S8 release date revealed at MWC 2017

Samsung fans have just been treated to one their best views yet of the Galaxy S8.

The Korean firm has just given a sneak preview of what's to come during their Mobile World Congress press conference.

The short video not only reveals what appears to be an edge-to-edge display but also the official launch date.

Rumours had been rife that Samsung's S8 unpacked event would take place on March 29th and this date is now confirmed.

Samsung is expected to push the boundaries with the S8 and the video boasts that it's time to "Unbox your phone" - suggesting a new design is coming to the S8.

Samsung Galaxy S8 will get a dramatic new design, with no buttons, and an edge-to-edge display

There's already plenty of rumours about this new flagship smartphone and a recent leak has even revealed a number key specs that look set to be featured.

A specification sheet, which was posted by technobuffalo, reports that the standard S8 will include a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display, 12 megapixel camera rear camera and 8 megapixel front-facing snapper.

This device will also feature an iris scanner, waterproof design and 64GB of expandable memory.

Wireless charging, Samsung Pay and security via Samsung's Knox will also be included.

If the leak is true, it appears that alongside the S8, Samsung will also unveil another new device called the S8+.

This phone will include a giant 6.2-inch screen - one of the biggest ever seen on smartphone.

Other rumours that aren't leaked in the spec sheet are a fingerprint scanner on the rear of the phone and a new home button which could be embedded under the AMOLED display.

The processor is also missing from the document but it's thought the S8 and S8+ will include Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 835 powerhouse.

Although the S8 and S8+ won't arrive for a weeks Samsung has lifted the lid on some other new devices.

The Tab S3 and the Samsung Galaxy Book have just be unveiled in Barcelona and offer a new tablet experience to users.

The Tab S3 features 9.7-inch Super AMOLED display which is capable of playing HDR content and there's a new S Pen for writing and sketching on the screen.

This tablet is powered by Android but Samsung has also released the Galaxy Book which features Windows 10.

The Galaxy Book comes in two sizes with both featuring a keyboard case and S Pen at no extra cost.

Huawei P10: Release date, leaks, pictures and rumours about the premium Chinese smartphone

Now a legitimate contender alongside the likes of Apple and Samsung, Chinese company Huawei is busy preparing its biggest smartphone launch to date.

The Huawei P10 will be launched next week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Which, to be honest, seems like a bit of a formality at this point .

There have been a huge number of leaks and spoilers that have all but revealed the phone entirely.

Last year's Huawei P9 introduced dual camera lenses crafted by Leica as well as a sleek metal design. Appropriately enough, it got extremely well reviewed and expectations are sky high for a follow up.

Here's everything we know so far about the Huawei P10.

Latest news

Huawei appears to have done most of the hard work for us and taken any guesswork out of the P10's launch date.

The Chinese company posted a brief YouTube video with the self-explanatory title: #HuaweiP10 is coming!

The video includes a date: February 26, 2017. And you can see it for yourself here:

Release date

The unveiling may be taking place at Mobile World Congress , but there's no telling when Huawei will actually get the device into our hands.

Last year's P9 launched in April and the P8 the year before that was also released in April. So there's no reason to think Huawei won't follow the same pattern for 2017.

Price

Again, details are sketchy here but the price is likely to reflect Huawei's ascension to the A-list of smartphone manufacturers.

It's unlikely to be any cheaper than the £449 launch price of the Huawei P9 last year. In fact, if we were betting types, we'd put the launch price at nearer £500.

You can probably count the UK's post-Brexit economical gymnastics as a factor in the price hike as well.

Design Read More

Huawei hit a bit of a home run with regards to the design of the P9. Chamfered edges, minimal bezels and a good-looking screen were the icing on a dual lens camera and zippy software.

A few leaked images (above) have surfaced that supposedly show the P10 - and it doesn't look like has changed.

They show that the P10 will have a curved-edge display, similar to that found on the Galaxy S7 edge. The pictures, obtained by Tech2 , also show the famous Leica dual-lens camera that debuted with the P9 last year.

As with most other smartphones, the P10 appears to be coming in two different sizes. There will be a larger (and probably more expensive) P10 Plus launched at the same time.

Intriguingly, the fingerprint scanner appears to have been moved from the rear of the phone to the front - similar to an iPhone 7.

Specs Read More

For the number-crunchers out there, rumours suggest the Huawei P10 will feature a 5.5-inch screen and 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB configurations with a 3,100mAh battery.

The P10 Plus is expected to boast 6GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB options with a 3,650mAh battery.

The phone(s) will arrive with Google Android Nougat but it will be heavily skinned with Huawei's own Emotion User Interface.

Of course, if you're planning to upgrade your mobile phone this year, then you'll want to pay attention to Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017.

Every year, in February, technology companies from around the globe descend on Barcelona to showcase their latest smartphones, tablets and wearable gadgets, and offer a glimpse into our digital future.

iPhone 8 price and release date | iPhone 8 features and specs – New Product

The iPhone 7 has only been on sale for a while, but all we seem to be hearing are rumours about the iPhone 8. We think Apple might well be holding back some major updates and improvements for the iPhone 8, which – if the rumours are true – will be launched on the 10th anniverary of the first iPhone. Here we round up the rumours about the iPhone 8 release date, price, features and specifications. See also: Best phones 2016.

Hang on a minute, shouldn't the next iPhone be the iPhone 7s? It still could be. Leaks and more rumours are pointing to not one but three new iPhones, two of which may well be branded as iPhone 7s and 7s Plus models. The main launch, though, would be the flagship, 10th anniversary iPhone '8'.

We'd be surprised if Apple goes for that naming convention, however, and other rumours say it  could even be called simply 'The iPhone', or iPhone Pro, but for now we'll stick to calling it the iPhone 8 for simplicity.

Update 24 February: The rumour mill is running at full tilt at the moment, so here's a summary of what to expect from the iPhone 8:

That's the main specs covered, but here are the other rumours:

  • The main logic board will be in two pieces instead of the traditional one
  • Apple may move the SIM tray to the bottom edge (this could be to allow room for other internal components or to include a Smart Connector)
  • Quick charging will be supported when using a cable
  • New speaker design could make the phone the thinnest ever
  • It will use an OLED screen from Samsung – read more.
  • Facial recognition in addition to fingerprint scanner
  • Laser sensor for gesture recognition – read more.
  • The latest video from ConceptsiPhone does a decent job of showing what the iPhone 8 might look like. It's interesting to see an idea of how the bottom of the display might be used, similar to the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro.

iPhone 8 release date rumours: When is the iPhone 8 coming out? iPhone 8 UK release date: September 2017 (TBC)

Although still months away, we can fairly confidently predict the iPhone 8 release date. Assuming the annual September announcement tradition continues, the iPhone 8 release date will be in September 2017. However, 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone launch, so we wouldn't be too surprised if Apple mixed things up a bit (it launched the SE – pictured below – in March).

According to Tech Trader Daily (via MacRumours), Apple might be putting the iPhone 8 into production in June, sooner than expected. However, that doesn't necessarily mean the launch will be earlier than September given the potentially radical design change.

It's not necessarily going to be called the iPhone 8, of course, but that's the name we're using to keep things simple.

iPhone 8, iPhone 7S, iPhone X or something else? What will the iPhone in 2017 be called?

It seems the name may have been confirmed with an Apple employee referring to the new device by the name 'iPhone 8' unprompted when speaking to Business Insider. However, there is another suggestion as Apple Insider claims that Apple could call this year's iPhone the iPhone X.

As we've mentioned, the iPhone for 2017 is slightly harder to predict because it will mark a big anniversary for the smartphone.

The latest rumours are that Apple will release three new iPhone models as part of the main lineup. This could well be the 'S' versions of the 7 and 7 Plus, and the extra 'iPhone 8', an even more premium flagship with 'revolutionary' features.

The Wall Street Journal says: "Apple plans bigger design changes for 2017, the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone. Those changes could include an edge-to-edge organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, screen and eliminating the home button by building the fingerprint sensor into the display, according to people familiar with the matter.

"At a meeting with an Apple executive, one of the company's China-based engineers asked why this year's model [the iPhone 7] lacked a major design change in keeping with Apple's usual two-year cycle. The answer, one person at the meeting recalled, was that the new technology in the pipeline will take time to implement. People familiar with the matter said some features that Apple hopes to integrate into iPhones, such as curved screens, weren't ready for this year's models," it added.

If Apple follows the usual pattern, the iPhone 7 that launched this year will be followed by the iPhone 7S in 2017. The fact that it's 10 years since the original iPhone means this could all go out the window. Apple will want to do something special to celebrate the occasion so an 'S' model, which usually just brings small tweaks, won't suffice.

It's pretty much anyone's guess at the moment, hence, we're calling the 2017 model the iPhone 8 at the moment but it's perfectly plausible that the new phone won't conform to the traditional naming system at all. The iPhone SE (special edition) is already a thing, so perhaps Apple will go with 'iPhone Pro', iPhone Anniversary Edition' or even just 'iPhone' – although naming the iPad 3 as 'the new iPad' didn't go down too well.

A report from Nikkei suggested that in 2017 there would be three new iPhone models. It sounded as though we were in for the usual 4.7- and 5.5in models (the regular and Plus), plus a third new 'Pro' model with a 5.5in or above curved screen. Its source said the screen would be "bent on the two sides" making it sound like a Galaxy Note 7 rival. Of course, this didn't happen with the iPhone 7, though it doesn't mean we won't see a curved-screen iPhone 8.

Vote in our poll to let us know what you think Apple will name the anniversary iPhone.

    iPhone 8 price

We're speculating for now, of course, as the iPhone 7 has only recently gone on sale. Whether Apple will introduce a price increase for the potentially special iPhone 8 is anyone's guess. However, the iPhone 7 price jumped up to £599 in the UK thanks to Brexit and we hope that it will stay the same with next year's anniversary model. However, in light of the latest leaks, the 'anniversary' model seems to be an ultra-premium device that could cost more than any iPhone yet. At least one report claims it will be more than $1000 in the US.

Although one analyst predicts the iPhone 8 will be the best selling model ever – with up to 150m sales – another is worried that following the anniversary edition, Apple will see a possible 10 year slump afterwards.

It is believed that moving to OLED for the iPhone 8 will push up costs as much as $50m for Apple, eating into the firm's profit margin. Whether the firm takes the hit and keeps the price of the phone the same or not remains to be seen.

iPhone 8 specifications and new features

If Apple does indeed do something special for the iPhone's 10th anniversary, which is ever more likely from all the leaks, the iPhone 8 will be one which fans will no doubt want to upgrade to on launch day. Could we see the biggest queues ever?

A combination of design and hardware changes will make the iPhone 8 the most radical new iPhone to date, if we are to go by the rumours and leaks.

    iPhone 8 screen

It seems certain that the iPhone 8 will have an OLED screen – like the Samsung Galaxy S7 – rather than the traditional IPS tech Apple has used previously.

A recent KGI report says that it will be a 5.8in screen which will fit into a chassis a similar size to the current 4.7in iPhone and that the phone will have a significantly higher capacity battery.

Here's a diagram from the report which illustrates how the iPhone 8 will slot into the range:

iPhone 8 rumours - screen OLED

iPhone 8 rumours - screen OLED

As you can see, the screen will have two parts. A 5.15in 'main' screen with a resolution of 2,436 x 1,125 pixels and a separate 'function area' across the bottom. This is likely to be where the integrated fingerprint scanner will live, and it may operate like the Touch Bar on the latest MacBook Pro laptops.

Whatever turns out to be the case, the screens are coming from Samsung. The Korean Herald reported that a source confirmed the order from Samsung and that – like the screen on the Galaxy S7 Edge – it will be made from plastic and not glass. Typically glass is only used for flat screens, so this is not too surprising.

And  now according to GSMarena, the deal between Apple and Samsung for the screens is now finalised.

The iPhone 8 won't be the first to have a bezel-less screen. Xiaomi has already launched the Mi Mix, reviewed. It's a stunning device and the first of a new category of phones with it's 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio, according to the firm.

    Xiaomi Mi Mix

    Xiaomi Mi Mix

A Facebook post by Robert Scoble – a well-known tech strategist – reveals new details about the next iPhone. In the lengthy post Scoble claims to have been told that it will be "a clear piece of glass… which will put holograms on top of the real world like Microsoft HoloLens does". He also says the phone will have an OLED screen and that Apple has 600 engineers working on a next-generation 3D sensor and that the phone will have eye sensors. These will bring "a new kind of interface". He also says that you'll "pop it into a headset which has eye sensors on it, which enables the next iPhone to have a higher apparent frame rate and polygon count than a PC with a Nvidia 1080 card in it."

Plus, he says that new sources revealed we can "expect battery and antennas to be hidden around the edges of the screen, which explains how Apple will fit in some of the pieces even while most of the chips that make up a phone are in a pack/strip at the bottom of the phone."

These sound like ridiculous predictions, especially the part about the phone being transparent – battery tech is not yet good enough to make one small enough to "hide" – but if true, the iPhone 8 will be a revolution rather than the evolution we've seen with the iPhone 7 this year. We'll continue to update this article as new information appears, but here's how things stand right now.

This concept image via ConceptsiPhone shows what an edge-to-edge OLED display iPhone might look like:

    iPhone 8 concept

    iPhone 8 concept

    Glass chassis

Jony Ive has wanted to introduce an iPhone which resembles a single sheet of glass for a long time and the 2017 anniversary iPhone could be the one. It's rumoured that at least one iPhone in 2017 will use a glass body, according to Apple supplier Catcher Technology. Glass on the front and back would make it like a hugely updated version of the iPhone 4S.

This, combined with the rumour that the iPhone 8 will sport an edge-to-edge OLED screen makes things rather interesting.

Allen Horng, chairman and chief executive of Catcher Technology, a key supplier said: "As far as I know, only one [iPhone] model will adopt glass casing next year. I don't think this move will have an impact on Catcher's revenue as glass casing still needs a durable metal frame which requires advanced processing technology and would not be cheaper than the current model."

However, don't get your hopes up. Although Foxconn – the manufacturer of iPhones in China – has been experimenting with building a glass chassis for around a year, it is likely too early to put it into mass production. Current tooling is all for aluminium chassis and that's where the expertise and investment is. A switch to glass – or ceramic or some other material – would be such a massive change that there would be far more leaks backing up these rumours. Put simply, we don't believe that the iPhone 8 will be an all-glass machine.

    In-screen Touch ID home button

What's much more likely is that the home button will be 'virtual' in the iPhone 8.  This makes sense, and is surely one of the features of the 'function area' in the diagram earlier.

But will Apple ditch Touch ID? Previous rumours say no but another new Apple patent for an "Acoustic Imaging System Architecture" suggest otherwise.

It's impossible to know what Apple will do, since there are so many patents. One Apple patent shows that the new iPhone's Touch ID fingerprint sensor, which is usually situated beneath the Home button, could be built-in to the entire display, eliminating the need for a Home button and making room for a larger display without enlarging the overall size of the smartphone.

These rumours seemed pretty far fetched to begin with, but it might just happen. Sonavation recently announced that it has found a way to insert ultrasonic biometric sensors underneath a Gorilla Glass display, still being able to read a user's fingerprints.

The newly developed tech is "well suited for through-the-glass fingerprinting and specifically architected to deliver advanced security

and ease-of-integration into mobile and IoT devices" Sonavation's CTO Rainer Schmitt said.

The company claims that it can even do one better than the existing Touch ID (and most other fingerprint scanners on the market) by being able to scan fingerprints on a finger that's wet, dirty or oily. Though it's not clear which devices will be the first to feature this new technology, but we assume it'd either be the iPhone or a flagship Android smartphone.

Another patent has been awarded to Apple for a button which places the fingerprint sensing technology underneath the screen. Named a 'capacitive fingerprint sensor including an electrostatic lens', it means the Touch ID fingerprint sensor can work through various layers of the display.

    Apple fingerprint sensor patent

    Apple fingerprint sensor patent

Yet another patent, via Apple Insider, deals with the light sensor – the one which adjusts the screen brightness automatically. It's called 'Electronic Devices With Display-Integrated Light Sensors' and explains that having a light sensor can result in an increase in the size and weight of the device so "it would therefore be desirable to be able to provide improved electronic devices with light sensors and displays."

    iPhone 8 light sensor

    iPhone 8 light sensor

    3D front-facing camera

However, Macrumours says that a JP Morgan analyst claims there will be no fingerprint recognition at all, and that Apple will instead embed a front-facing 3D laser scanner that will be able to accurately recognise your face. This will avoid the problem where Touch ID doesn't work if you have wet fingers – or the sensor has water on it. He says it will also be more secure, which could lead to more companies – including banks – supporting Apple Pay.

This theory is backed up by Kuo of KGI Securities whose latest report, via 9to5Mac, says Apple will put an enhanced front camera and an IR sensor in order to build up a 3D model of the user's face.

The report also says that Apple's 3D algorithms are "years ahead" of Android, and such a feature could be an iPhone exclusive for a couple of years before Android phone makers catch up.

    More display rumours

As pointed out by Patently Apple, yet more patents suggest a curved-glass design and also that the sides of the phone could be used for virtual buttons. For example, this could be used for certain controls when the camera app is in use. If true, the phone would rival Samsung's edge screen features.

There were also some rumours we heard about the iPhone 7's screen that never made it to fruition. It's possible that they could see daylight with the iPhone 8.

Economic Daily News speculated that the iPhone 7 could feature a 3D display, and one that doesn't require the use of those annoying 3D glasses. The website claimed at the time that Apple supply chain partner TPK is working on a project that could produce a glasses-free 3D display, though we're not holding out much hope for this as its been done before (remember the LG Optimus 3D?) and has never done well.

There were also some rumours to suggest that the iPhone 7 could have a sidewall display, similar to that found on the Galaxy S7 edge and Note 7. This came from an Apple patent that was published in 2015. The patent hints at a future iPhone with a display that extends onto the sides of the device, providing interactive or touch sensitive portions that give access to slide-to-unlock functionality, music player controls, messaging readout, called ID, system controls and more.

One of Apple's partners, Japan Display, is working in flexible an foldable screens similar to Samsung and LG. Whether this will end up in the iPhone 8 remains to be seen – it's unlikely but still interesting. Apple has plenty of patents describing bendable and folding devices, according to TechnoBuffalo.

More details on the screen tech include that Apple is supposedly working on a new generation of 3D Touch. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the firm will make it from a thin film in order to introduce enhanced sensitivity – via AppleInsider.

LG G6 To Release On 10th March, Samsung Galaxy S8 On 21st April

LG and Samsung are two of the biggest names when it comes to the world of consumer electronics. The companies are both international giants which share their origin in South Korea. Both these giants are all set to launch their gen-next smartphones, the LG G6 and the Samsung Galaxy S8. Reports have now surfaced via ETNews, a Korean news portal, which states that the LG G6 will release on the 10th of March, while the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus will go on sale from the 21st of April.

    LG G6

The latest LG flagship smartphone is being teased by the company for weeks, and is going to make its debut at the Mobile World Congress 2017, on the 26th of February. LG is all set to have the G6 go on sale a few days later, on the 10th of March, if the reports are to be believed. Pre-orders will begin from the 2nd of March. This is the first time in their history that an LG flagship releases before a Samsung flagship.

The LG G6 is expected to run on Android 7.1.1 OS and has been heavily rumored to release with the Google Assistant. The phone features a 'full-vision' display, and dual cameras. Stay tuned for more updates on the G6 later this week.

    Samsung Galaxy S8

The Samsung Galaxy S8 has had quite an air of uncertainty around it till now. With these reports, things look clearer. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is expected to go on sale on the 21st of April, while pre-orders are likely to begin from the 13th of April. The launch is expected to happen sometime in March, though no dates on the launch are confirmed as of now.

Samsung's gen-next flagship is likely to release with an edge-to-edge display, 4GB of RAM, and will be running on the Snapdragon 835 processor. The device is also expected to feature 5.8 and 6.2 inched variants, and a DeX Operating System.

HTC Confirm New U Smartphones For Local March Release

At a press briefing in Sydney today, HTC Australia confirmed that its new HTC U series of handsets will be rolling out for Australian customers from March 8th.

Both the HTC U Ultra and U Play are available for pre-sale in the meantime.

First revealed back in January, the Ultra features a dual-display, on-board support for 24-bit audio and integration with HTC's AI (accelerating intelligence) software (called the HTC Sense Companion).

Camera-wise, the Ultra boasts a 16-megapixel sensor, with support for UltraPixel images, laser auto-focus and 4K video recording.

Comparing to the specs of last year's HTC 10, HTC Product Manager Thomas Dexmier highlighted the Ultra's laser-focus.

He says it focuses faster and is better at focusing on moving objects.

Dexmier says that they treated the camera of the HTC 10 as a "baseline" and then made improvements to the laser-focus, optical image stabilisation and sensor involved.

What's more, users are able to toggle between Ultra-Pixel and standard image modes with ease.

He went on to explain that the Ultra-Pixel mode would be better suited for selfies (as it could capture more light) while the traditional or HDR camera settings would work better for outdoor environments.

If nothing else, it should finally provide a clear and demonstrable tool for explaining the difference between regular and Ultra Pixels, which popular tech blog Gizmodo has previously slammed as a "made-up marketing word."

It'll arrive at an RRP of $1199 outright through JB Hi-Fi and Harvey-Norman or through a plan via Vodafone.

Meanwhile the HTC U Play drops the second-display, reduces the specs on the camera and processor but reduces the build size. It's a slimmer device that comes with sharp-but-smaller screen.

The Play will retail for $799, and is available through the same channels as its higher-end companion.

Both will arrive in four different color variants – Indigo Blue, Black Oil, Cosmic Pink Gold, and Iceberg White.

HTC confirmed that the premium Sapphire version of the handset, available in the US, won't be making its way here.

Expect a review of the products on ChannelNews in the near future.

HTC to release only 6-7 “highly-profitable” smartphones for 2017

Some companies do it by volume, some do it by quality. But at the end of the year, all smartphone makers want to achieve is of course, profit. It doesn't really matter for most of them whether you achieve it by the former or the latter. But for this 2017, Taiwanese OEM HTC has decided to focus on releasing just 6-7 highly profitable smartphones and their main goal is really not to increase revenue but instead return to profitability.

Chia-Lin Chang, the president of HTC's Smartphone and Connected Devices Business, announced during the company's quarterly earnings call that they will be releasing only around 6-7 devices this year. And these smartphones will actually be more of quality than quantity as they want to focus on those that can actually bring them back to the level of profitability that they previously enjoyed. This also means no entry-level phones, as this has been an "ultra competitive" market and will not give them the result that they are going for.

So far this 2017, they have already released the HTC U Ultra and the HTC U Play which were announced in January. Both devices sport the aluminum frames sandwiched in between curved class both in the front and back, giving it a look like it's made from liquid. The Ultra is the more higher end of the two and costs around $749 while the Play is a smaller and lower version and costs around $440.

Now whether HTC is capable of releasing high quality devices and whether the market will actually bite is something that we still have to see. The good news is that they are more focused and hopefully that will result into better products and for them, profitable revenue as well.

Why do new phones ship with older versions of Android?

New phones shipping with outdated versions of Android isn't too surprising. The reasons? Release cycles, and Benjamin Franklin.

This summer, you'll see phones sold — expensive phones — that have older versions of Android. Brand new phones that cost hundreds of dollars and are the best models available. They will be on shelves beside other brand new phones that have "old" software on them, too. And not just models that have been available for a while, but just-released devices that we have heard about and are waiting to buy. For some, that can be frustrating. But there is a reason, and it's pretty simple.

It's known as opportunity cost. The idea behind opportunity cost is that all resources must be used efficiently. These resources could be monetary, but they also include things like time or any other corporate benefit. We're all more familiar with the idea the way Ben Franklin expressed it: "Remember that Time is Money."

It's no secret that most phones that run Android aren't using the latest software. The main reason is that it's not an easy task to keep phones updated because of Android's software licensing, and nobody involved in making your phone or the software on it wants things to change. Many of those same reasons apply when we see brand new shiny phones that have old software on them, too.

Building an operating system is hard and you can't change the platform in the middle of doing it.

Google only makes Android for the products they sell. They allow companies like Samsung or LG to build their own operating system based on Android any time they like because of a liberal software license. That's why Android became the dominant operating system so quickly, and it's also why your phone probably has an older version of Android, and has ever since you bought it.

It's not cheap to build and test an operating system. Sometimes it's comparatively easy; think of BlackBerry's Android phone and how they are patched on time every month when Google releases a security bulletin. The new code was designed to be merged into existing code, and all a company using it needs to do is check the parts they have changed compared to the download Google provides. Actual changes to the Android core are another matter, and even a bump from 7.0 to 7.1 can prove challenging. And expensive.

Samsung is likely going to show us a Galaxy S8 in late March. It may run Android 7.0 or it may run 7.1. The chance that it will be running 7.1.1 (the latest official version) is very slim because that particular version wasn't ready when Samsung was finalizing the software the way it wants it to be on the S8. And that's not going to be a big deal. It will be running Android Nougat and have the same application support as Google's Pixel. Phones that release near the beginning of the year are usually all like this and will only be a point or two behind.

Those point releases are nice but not critical. 7.1 is still just fine.

This becomes more of a problem for phones that come later in the year. Android gets its yearly platform update every autumn. Recent versions have had a beta testing cycle so we get to see them a few months before. But companies can't build their software based on beta code so any phone in late stages of production before the Android platform update will be a full platform version behind. That can have major implications when it comes to security and app compatibility.

In both cases, the time it would take to stop production and update the software before selling them would directly affect the amount of money a company makes from selling them. Companies that make things like phones exist only to make money.

Nobody at Samsung or LG or anyone else wants you to have old software on your phone. But because they have to do the updating themselves, it takes time. And time equals money.

HTC leaves 'ultra competetive' entry-level smartphone market to focus on turning a profit

Expect only mid-range and high-end flagships from HTC moving forward.

HTC is hoping that less is more when it comes to smartphone offerings. Chia-Lin Chang, President of HTC's Smartphone and Connected Device divisions, says the Taiwanese company will stop chasing high sales numbers in the entry-level smartphone markets and instead focus on designing and selling highly profitable devices.

This news comes from HTC's quarterly conference call with investors, wherein the company announced a fourth straight quarter posting an operating loss. When asked how the company plans to shift its strategies for 2017, Chang responded in part by saying "We are going to get out of the entry level part, which I think is ultra competitive and we're not necessarily going to benefit from a profitability perspective here. To us, profitability on the smartphone is going to be quite important."

Chang continued by saying the company plans to focus on mid-range to high-end products moving forward, stating the company is planning to release only seven "key SKU" (stock-keeping units) in 2017.

The strategy does make sense, given how crowded the budget phone space has become —especially in the competitive overseas markets of China and India. Instead of chasing high sales figures with cheaper devices, the plan will be to focus on mid-range devices and premium flagships with higher profit margins — such as the forthcoming HTC U Ultra and U Play.

Only time will tell if this new strategy will lift HTC's smartphone division out of the red, but at least we're sure to see the top tier of smartphones from HTC moving forward.

Nokia to dial back time with 3310 re-release

The handset homage will be launched at the Mobile World Congress and will cost around $80, reports say.

It was one of Nokia's most successful phones, selling around 126 million handsets worldwide when it was launched 17 years ago.

And now it looks like HMD Global, owner of the Nokia brand, are bringing back the Nokia 3310 mobile phone handset.

Known for its indestructible nature and long battery life, the affordable phone was a big hit with users, who have long regarded it as one of the most reliable handsets ever made.

Introduced as a replacement to the Nokia 3210 in 2000, the model was discontinued five years later.

However, according to a report, Finnish company HMD Global are now planning to re-release the phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month, along with three other new Nokia handsets.

The 3310 handset will cost around AU $80, according to technology website VentureBeat.

The competitive price is intended to lure nostalgic former Nokia 3310 fans, willing to supplement their existing smartphone with a second companion phone.

It is not yet known if the new handset will include the classic Nokia ringtone, made famous by comedian Dom Joly and his Trigger Happy TV big phone guy.

This is not the first nostalgia comeback.

Vinyl is having a revival that saw record sales overtake digital music sales for the first time in the UK last year, while artists including Eminem and Blink 182 have reissued classic early albums on cassette tapes.

Polaroid cameras, helped by Polaroid-style filters common on smartphones and Instagram, are also seeing a surge in popularity.

Samsung will be giving its next Galaxy smartphones a pass at the upcoming MWC 2017. This gives them extra time to work on the Galaxy S8 which is their biggest release after the Galaxy Note7 fiasco.

To make up for lost ground, the upcoming Galaxy S8 series is gonna be huge. Not just in terms of scale but in display size.

For the Galaxy S8, Samsung will be launching two models but both will feature its signature dual-curved displays. The difference would be on the screen size with a standard sized Galaxy S8 and a larger Galaxy S8+. Serial leakster @evleaks has more or less confirmed this with the logo above.

In the past, Samsung Galaxy S series are often seen as "compact" flagships in comparison to its bigger productivitivy focused Note phablets. Last year, the Galaxy S7 came with a traditional 5.1″ flat display, while the Galaxy S7 edge came with a larger 5.5″ dual-curved screen.

For 2017, Samsung is going much bigger than that. According to @evleaks, the base Galaxy S8 will feature a 5.8″ display and that's larger than the Note phablet series which tops at 5.7″. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S8+ is purported to have a 6.2″ screen which is almost encroaching tablet territory. Both are said to be having Quad HD resolution on a Super AMOLED panel.

If this is true, this would be their biggest flagship smartphones yet. The display isn't as big as the Xiaomi Mi MIX and Samsung would definitely try to make it usable with a single hand by reducing the width as much as possible.

As seen in earlier leaks, the Galaxy S8 is expected to lose the iconic home button in favour for a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Another tactic is to have an odd 18:9 display aspect ratio which makes the screen taller instead of being wider.

The Galaxy S8 is expected to be announced as early as end March and that's just slightly more than a month away. What do you think of the screen size? Do you mind sacrificing the home button for a bigger display? Let us know in the comments below.
