Nintendo's First Smartphone Game, Miitomo, Has Arrived Worldwide

Following its launch earlier this month in Japan, Nintendo's first smartphone game, Miitomo, has landed in the west, right on schedule. You can grab the free game right now from iTunes and Google Play.

Miitomo was a big hit in Japan, having reached 1 million downloads in its first three days. It also climbed to the No. 1 spot for free apps on the App Store and Google Play. Nintendo will be hoping it can repeat that success for its western debut.

"With Miitomo, Nintendo takes its first step into the world of smart devices," Nintendo marketing executive Scott Moffitt said in a statement. "Miitomo brings the special Nintendo charm and polish that people around the world love to an entirely new format and audience."

Miitomo is more of an app than a game per se. Developed in partnership with DeNA, the app allows users to create and customize a Mii character, then sync up with others, much like the Mii functionality on Wii and Wii U. Users can then link their Facebook and Twitter accounts to Miitomo to find friends to interact with.

The app also lets you create "Miifotos." For these, you can place Mii characters in images from a smartphone's image gallery. You can click through the image gallery below to see some examples that Nintendo provided. These images can then be shared on social media sites.

Although Miitomo is free to download, it also has an in-game shop where extra clothing and items can be purchased with Miitomo coins. Real-world money can be used to purchase Miitomo Coins, or they can be eared via gameplay.

Check out the video above to see an overview for Miitomo. The new My Nintendo loyalty/rewards program also launches today, March 31.

Miitomo is just the first of Nintendo's smartphone games. Another upcoming smartphone game "will not be a communication app" like Miitomo, but instead a title that features a well-known Nintendo character--maybe Mario?

A total of five smartphone games from Nintendo are due to launch by 2017. These games, all of which will be free, are being produced under the guidance of longtime Mario Kart producer Hideki Konno.

Nintendo's smartphone app Miitomo will reach the U.S. tomorrow

Wildly Popular Miitomo Smartphone App To Socialize U.S. Audience March 31st

Miitomo is Nintendo's first venture into the smartphone app world and they are hoping that the United States launch will be as successful as its Japan launch. During its first three days after launching in Japan two weeks ago, more than 1 million users have downloaded Miitomo, Nintendo's first free-to-start social mobile app focused on building communication with friends using their Mii characters.

Through your Mii and the Mii of your friends, Miitomo will prompt questions, spark conversations, and offer opportunities to learn and share new things.

Further encouraging the hype that is already surrounding the game's US release, Nintendo also announced that interested players who wish to pre-register before March 31 will be receiving special in-game treats from the gaming giant.

There are also other in-app features, like a shop where you can buy more outfits and accessories, and a game where you can win exclusive prizes. It also reached the first spot for free apps on the App Store and Google Play.

My Nintendo is a new comprehensive service that rewards users for interacting with Nintendo products and services in different ways. Though free to download, it does arrive with some in-app purchases, most of which pertain to decorating and accessorizing the Mii avatar. Previously the company promised a March release outside of Japan but with the month nearly over fans were wondering if the app would be pushed. The app supports Android and iOS, and we'll be giving it a test-drive when it finally launches...

Are you looking forward to Miitomo?

You now have 48 hours to preregister for the app with your new Nintendo Account. Releasing Nintendo property games on non-Nintendo platforms is a relatively unusual move for the company, and marks a shift in market strategy.

Once downloaded, users can create their very own Mii avatar that they can customize from scratch or use the camera on their mobile devices to create a Mii based on the photo they take.

Are you ready to get talking with your friends virtually. sort of?

By employing Miitomo as one of the main modes to garner points for downloadable games and add-ons that are presently accessible on their Japanese program site, Nintendo has enticed users to download the new mobile game as soon as it was rolled out.

Merely 3 days since it's release, Nintendo's Miitomo app has been confirmed as reaching over 1 million users in Japan. Mii is your own avatar that you can dress up, personalize, and play with.

So far, President Tatsumi Kimishima has been coy, saying only that Nintendo's next smartphone game will feature one of the company's beloved characters. It combines social elements with mini-games and character customization, which is where the in-app purchases come in.

These "Miis" then walk around a "room" asking users personal questions, such as personal likes, preferences and recent activities.

Miitomo is the latest game from the once undisputed video game manufacturer, Nintendo. Your Mii can talk and speak to you. It's a social app that brings you and your friends closer than ever.

Miitomo has been described as Nintendo's idea of Facebook, with heavy influence taken from Tomodachi Life - a simulation game released for 3DS in 2014.

Furthermore, when it comes to the circulation of this application in other countries, Nintendo says the app will launch in the USA and other regions around the world by the end of March. Miitomo users can also set up a Nintendo Account that connects them across multiple devices like their PC and smartphone.

Nintendo announced the Miitomo as its first-ever official mobile game a year ago. Are you hooked yet?

NFC-enabled smartphones can be used to pay for transport, food

SINGAPORE: Following the conclusion of a joint trial to study the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to pay for public transport, compatible mobile phones can now be used to do just that.

With the new NFC SIM card, certain mobile devices can be used for payments on MRT, LRT and public buses, as well as at more than 30,000 ez-link acceptance points across the island, according to a joint press release by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and EZ-Link on Tuesday (Mar 29).

Users need to turn on the NFC function on their mobile phones to make payments and top up the purse, as they would with an ez-link card. Users can also check their ez-link purse balance, transaction history, and top-up value using the EZ-Link mobile application, the press release added.

The compatible NFC-enabled mobile phones include:

  • LG Optimus G
  • LG Optimus G Pro
  • Samsung GALAXY ACE 3 With LTE
  • Samsung GALAXY Note II LTE
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 5 4G+
  • Samsung GALAXY Note Edge 4G+
  • Samsung GALAXY S III
  • Samsung GALAXY S III LTE
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 4G+

  • Sony Xperia Z
  • Sony Xperia Z2
  • Sony Xperia Z3
  • Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
  • Sony Xperia Z5
  • Sony Xperia Z5 Compact
  • Sony Xperia Z5 Premium
  • "We have been testing various innovative fare payment systems, and bringing these NFC SIMs and mobile phone models into the public transit ticketing environment bears fruit to LTA's on-going efforts to leverage on technology to bring greater convenience to commuters through new and convenient ways to pay for travel," said LTA Chief Executive Chew Men Leong.

The launch of the service follows the encouraging results from the joint trial, which ended in February 2016. Commencing in August 2014 with rail services and extended to buses in September 2015, the trial involved the testing of 15 NFC-enabled mobile phone models with the new NFC SIM, recording more than 30,000 transactions by 1,000 users.

The EZ-Link NFC SIM will be gradually made available to the public from Tuesday. For availability and pricing, please contact the respective mobile network operators, the release said.

LOCAL TELCOS TO OFFER NFC SIM CARDS

M1 and EZ-Link said in a separate release on Tuesday that the telco will be the first to allow its customers to pay using NFC. Starting from Tuesday, subscribers can swap their existing SIM cards to the NFC SIM, which will cost S$37.45, while those who sign up from Wednesday to Apr 30 will have their activation fee of S$9.10 waived.

The other two telcos have also issued press releases regarding their NFC SIM cards. Starhub said its NFC Transit SIM will cost S$37.45, or $26.75 for a SIM replacement, from Apr 2. The NFC ez-link purse fee of S$5 is also waived until further notice, it added.

Singtel subscribers, meanwhile, will be able to purchase the NFC SIM cards from its retail shops at prevailing SIM rates with no additional costs from late April. The usual S$5 EZ-Link registration fee will also be waived "for a limited time", the telco said.

Samsung to release new phone in India March 31; Is it Galaxy J3 (2016)?

Samsung is all set to release a new smartphone in India Thursday, March 31. The company hasn't revealed anything about the device, creating confusion whether it will be the 2016 version of the Galaxy J2, Galaxy J3, Galaxy J5 or the Galaxy J7. However, it is most likely that the handset could be the Galaxy J3 (2016) that was released in the United States earlier this year.

Samsung India (via SammyHub) has put up a promotion that reads "Watch out for the new smartphone that will change the way you ride." Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who endorsed the Galaxy J line last year, is seen in the teaser, thus giving a hint that it could be from the J series. The new device is said to have a new feature called "Bike Mode" that mutes the phone when turned on and sends message to callers to call back later.

The new device is very likely to be the Galaxy J3 (2016) that was released in China in November 2015 and then in the US in January this year. Priced at $179 (around Rs. 11, 915), the smartphone sports a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 pixels (294 ppi pixel density), measures 142.3x71x7.9mm in dimension and weighs 138g.

Under the hoods, it has a quad-core processor clocking at 1.2GHz, an 8GB/16GB internal memory (expandable up to 128 GB via microSD card), a 1.5GB RAM, an 8MP main camera, a 5MP front-snapper and a 2,600mAh battery. In terms of connectivity, it supports USB 2.0, GPS, Glonass, Beidou, WLAN 802.11 b / g / n 2.4GHz and Bluetooth v4.1.

    Like Us on Facebook

The rumored Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 official photos, however, were believed to have been leaked by German website WinFuture. And based on the leaked images, the Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 will have a sleek and metallic build.

In addition, the new Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 will be slightly larger compared to its predecessors. However, its design features make it a clone from the previous versions.

    Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 Specs

Rumors have it that the new Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 will feature a 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with a 1920 x 1080 screen resolution and 401 ppi pixel density, which is a bit bigger that the original Galaxy J7 released last year, Christian Today notes. The new phone will also carry an octa-core 1.6 GHz Exynos 7870 processor and ARM Mali-T830 GPU.

The new Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 also have 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, which can be expandable to 128 GB via microSD support.

Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 Other Features

Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 also boasts other features. These reportedly include a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera and a large 3,300 mAh battery. Samsung Releases J1 and J1 Mini in the Smartphone Market

The advanced camera on Galaxy S7edge & Galaxy S7 captures more light to deliver high quality images. In the meantime, Verizon has rolled out Android Marshmallow upgrades for LG G3 devices, but release dates for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular have yet to be announced.

This feature will make the Galaxy Note 6 very different from the current Galaxy Note 5, should this be true.

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said Tuesday its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S7 series, posted robust sales in Israel just a week after their launch. This major handset was also accompanied by a curved version entitled at the Galaxy S7 Edge.

The Galaxy S7 edge managed to pile up an impressive DxOMark Mobile Score of 88 points to become the newest top camera phone nosing out both S6 Edge+ and Xperia Z5 who share the top spot since December, 2015.

Several reports also suggest that the Moto X Play on the same network has started receiving the Andr oid 6.0 M update. The 2-in-1 tablet sports a massive 5,200 mAh battery which lasts for over ten hours even when you watch videos on full-screen. Either way, expect an August launch for the Note 6. Samsung has not begun retailing the devices in the latter group of countries yet, but pre-orders opened in China on March 11. Not only is it armed with a significantly larger 5.5-inch display, but the curved aspect of the screen is also particularly pleasing, and ensures that the device does not feel bulky despite the extra screen size. Samsung Galaxy Note 6 is also reported to have either Qualcomm or it's own FinFET Exynos depend on the region but what's astonishing here is that it will be supported by a titanic 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM.

The Galaxy S7 comes with wireless charging and fast charging, while the iPhone 6s does not.

This patent first surfaced in May 2015, and it shows a potential "phablet" slotting in to a proposed laptop/tablet dock above the keyboard. As per the images, the phone - which is a China specific variant - is seen sporting a metal chassis much like the Galaxy J3 (2016) and Galaxy J5 (2016).

Kyrie Irving to sit out Cavs' game at Knicks to restIn Indianapolis, Myles Turner scored 24 points and had a career-high 16 rebounds on his 20th birthday, and C.J. Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said at the morning shootaround that he's going to rest Kyrie Irving for this game.

HTC 10 Flagship Marshmallow Smartphone Leaked Ahead Of Global Debut

The HTC One M7 was arguably one of the best phones in its class, when people were enamored with the all metal design. Hemmerstoffer struck first with a trio of pictures, showing a black version of the device with some identifying information blurred out.

While we can't say for sure the HTC will go through with this rumored naming scheme, it is interesting that in a video HTC posted to YouTube on Wednesday, March 2, the company teased what it's calling the #powerof10.

After the prototype images were tweeted, @evleaks followed up with what appear to be official renders of the HTC 10 - this time in silver. Instead, HTC is opting to announce their new flagship later this month at an event that has yet to be formally announced.

HTC has been using its "One" branding for a few years now, but if these reports are true, the company is apparently looking to simplify. The teaser was released in HTC'S Turkish YouTube channel but do expect the see the smartphone this time. He re's another: It'll take advantage of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, feature the same beefy 4GB of RAM and push graphics performance with an identical Adreno 530 GPU. However, there are speculations that an HTC One M10 Windows 10 Mobile edition will come out soon.

HTC One M10 will come with 12.3 Megapixel rear camera with LED flash and IR Blaster. The front-facing speakers of the One M9 have given way to two capacitive buttons that flank the home button (which also doubles as a fingerprint reader). What I really like is the way it looks as though the glass on the front curves towards the edges, just like the One A9. It runs on the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with the Sense 8.0 UI laid on top.

HTC 10 primed to make its official debut on April 12

HTC teases new 'Boom'' for upcoming '10'

Unfortunately, the person that leaked this picture did not capture the phone's specs configuration as well, so we're still in the dark when it comes to HTC 10's hardware. Since Taiwan is HTC's home country, it might get the handset earlier than the rest of the world, so we may still have to wait a bit longer before seeing the One M10 hitting shelves in North America, Europe, and other regions. We'll never know the exact thinking behind their closed doors, of course, but we imagine it has something to do with not letting the hype train fade away, especially when their competitors' phones will have been on the market for a good amount of time and readily available by then.

HTC made a decision to release their handset later than the rest of the Android pack this year. Can the HTC 10 be the Legend that gives HTC a Rezounding success?

As mentioned before, there is no official word about the HTC 10 and nothing is for sure, but rumor has it that the smartphone will come sporting an AMOLED QHD screen that will measure 5.15-inches and will have a pixel resolution of 2560 x 1440. The image shows the smartphone's new Super LCD 5 display and AnTuTu benchmark score that beats the Galaxy S7 edge and iPhone 6s.

The HTC 10 (One M10) has been spotted in the wild. Moreover, the smartphone will reportedly feature a USB type-C port for faster charging and data transfer.

To believe the marketing campaign of the Taiwanese manufacturer, HTC 10 is obsessive and should make noise. It pulled the top score of 156091 compared to the Xiaomi Mi 5 in second places with 136875 and the S7 Edge which pulled a 134599.

Microsoft Surface Phone vs iPhone 7: Which will prove to be the 'breakthrough' smartphone?

San Francisco: 2015 was not a great year for the smartphone industry, but with the much- anticipated release of Microsoft's Surface Phone and Apple's iPhone 7, this year could be completely different.

The Surface Phone will be a flagship smartphone that has an industrial design similar to Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book. Intel has allegedly been involved with this smartphone project.

The Surface Phone is expected to run a full desktop OS - Windows 10. The device will not have the processor speed of Surface Pro 4 or a high-end tablet, but the fact that you could actually use desktop software on a smartphone is certainly new to the industry.

On the other hand, the iPhone 7 likely won't run a desktop operating system like OS X, but it's not designed to. It seems that there will be major changes in the design. The first real photo of the iPhone 7 Plus has made its presence on Mac Rumors. The website talked about the iPhone 7 Plus' camera.

The dual-lens camera is accompanied by an LED flash and microphone, as seen on previous iPhones, while the antenna bands have been relocated to the bottom and top edges of the smartphone.

There are also 3 small dots on the bottom of the smartphone that are likely in place for a Smart Connector, which is a new interface introduced by the iPad Pro.

Why Apple Will Never Release a Cheap iPhone

Every generation of the iPhone is different, but they all consistently share one thing in common – they're pricey. While you can get a pretty decent Android phone for $100, and many mid-range Windows smartphones can be had for $50 (Best Buy is currently selling the Lumia 640 for $30, which is ludicrous), iPhones consistently rank among the most expensive phones on the market.

The recently announced iPhone SE is perhaps the cheapest iPhone yet, but, at $399 for the 16GB model, it's far from being "cheap".

This isn't by accident. Apple's decision to limit their product line to solely premium devices is a deliberate decision – one that has allowed them to become the quintessential aspirational tech brand. But what does this mean for consumers? And what if you want to get an iPhone on the cheap?

    Why Apple Products Are Expensive

In the weeks leading up the launch of the iPhone SE, rumors that Apple was about to take the unprecedented step and launch a cheap iPhone were everywhere. At face value, it makes sense when you consider that Android phones are getting better, especially on the lower-end of the market.

It was oddly reminiscent of the launch of the iPhone 5C back in 2013. There was an expectation that a plastic, Fisher Price-esque iPhone would be cheap. But experienced Apple-watchers knew that there would never be a cheap iPhone. It's just not Apple's style.

    iphone-5c-review-4

First, let's cut to the obvious. Like BMW, Waitrose, Gucci, Whole Foods, and Burberry, Apple is what's known as an aspirational brand.

Many people aspire to own Apple products. There's a certain prestige that is conferred upon those who own Apple computers and phones, much like there is for those decked out head-to-toe in designer clothes. Part of Apple's status as an aspirational brand is derived from the fact that their products are expensive.

If everyone could afford them, Apple would cease to be an aspirational brand. They want to maintain this status, as this is often what makes people choose iPhones and MacBooks over equivalent phones. It's also worth adding that Apple selling affordable devices – be they phones or computers – doesn't follow the company's current business model.

Apple are a hardware company. They make their money from selling things people want at a steep markup.  Services like iCloud represent a tiny percentage of their business. Unlike Microsoft, the majority of the software they build – like iWork, and updates to Mac OS X – is given away for free, not sold.

Apple briefly flirted with selling cheap products. It was a disaster. During the late 1980's and early 1990's, Apple permitted certain manufacturers to sell generic computers running Mac OS 7 and 8. These were called Mac Clones and they existed for a brief moment during the most tumultuous period in Apple's history, when they were mere days away from bankruptcy.

    Outbound

Apple was ultimately saved thanks to the return of Steve Jobs who instituted a number of changes, the biggest of which was to stop licensing Mac OS to other manufacturers. While this killed the Mac Clones, it also restored Apple's control over their own hardware, and resulted in Apple becoming the titan we know it to be today.

There's one final reason why Apple will never sell a cheap device – be that a laptop or a phone. It's obvious, and it sounds like a cop-out, but Apple simply doesn't do "cheap". Where possible, they try to fill their products with components that are the best in class, and create delightful experiences for their users. This, in turn, results in high costs for consumers.

The iPhone 5SE is a great example of this. It packs precisely what you'd expect from Apple's highest-end phone, into a diminutive package.

Even the cheapest MacBook Pro is a pinnacle of industrial design. The iPhone – although sometimes bested on paper by devices from Samsung – is sturdy and well designed, and makes few compromises. Its camera beats your average point-and-shoot. Its screen is pixel perfect. It's designed to accommodate both productivity and leisure-focused users — and iOS is a pleasure to use.

    But You Don't Care

You're not bothered about Apple's brand perception, and how that influences prices. You don't care that they're primarily a hardware business, and don't subsidize their costs by selling your data, or selling you software. You just want a cheap iPhone.

I don't blame you. The enduring appeal of Apple products can't solely be attributed to their careful brand management, and our intrinsic desire to acquire expensive, shiny things. The success of the iPhone isn't just because we're essentially like magpies drawn to an aspirational piece of technology, but rather because they're really good phones.

So, how can you sate your iLust without breaking the bank? Well, there are a few ways.

    Buy Second Hand

Your first stop should be to take a peek at the thriving significant secondary market for iPhones. If you take a glance at eBay, or online classifieds services like Gumtree, Trademe and Craigslist, you'll see a lot of second-hand iPhones on sale, often at steeply discounted prices.

    iPhone

But there are some compromises to be made when getting an iPhone through secondary channels. Firstly, you almost certainly won't get a manufacturer's warranty or a guarantee. If your phone breaks down, you're very much on your own. Furthermore, you'll sacrifice being on the cutting-edge of technology. You'll almost certainly be getting an older iPhone, which will undoubtedly translate to weaker specifications, as well as missed features.

There's also a small, but significant chance, that you'll be purchasing a stolen iPhone. Pilfered goods are often sold through these mediums, where they can be offloaded often without any paper-trail being created. Furthermore, you'll be buying something that has been pre-owned. All the scratches and dents that were created by the previous owner will still be there, and it'll lack that delightful 'new phone smell'.

    Buy Android Instead

If you're willing to settle for an Android phone, you'll be pleased to know that you can get near-iPhone quality devices for not a lot of money. These devices, which are low in cost but high in quality, are down to competitive Chinese manufacturers like Huawei and Xiaomi. Personally speaking, my main cellphone is a Huawei Honor X5. On paper, it's an extremely potent phone, but it cost less than even the cheapest pre-owned iPhone 5S, which is long in the tooth these days.

Alternatively, you could get a Nexus phone. These are Google-endorsed Android handsets, running an untainted version of Android OS. They also tend to be well-specced, powerful devices, packed with enough RAM and CPU power to handle even the most demanding of users. Justin Dennis reviewed the Nexus 6P recently, and was suitably impressed.

    nexus-6p-volume

The Nexus 5X is the cheapest Android flagship handset you can buy. It's got a six-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a sharp and lightning-fast camera. The MSRP is usually $350, but you can get one for $299 from Amazon, or from the Google store, who have reduced the prices of all phones by $50 to celebrate the first year's anniversary of their store.

    Apple Will Always Be Expensive

Apple's notoriety as a premium hardware manufacturer will be the case until they pivot, and transform into a software company, like Microsoft, or a services company, like Google.

There will never be a cheap iPhone or Apple laptop so long as their brand perception is that of one of premium quality and luxury, and while their revenues are so heavily dependent upon the sale of hardware.

Does the high cost dissuade you from buying an iPhone? Or do you see it as money well-spent? Let me know in the comments below.

Google Project Ara to soon release modular smartphone, not tablet; could surprise on price

    -lg-g5-modular-smartphone

LG G5 with its 'cam module' attached

Google could release one of world's first truly modular mobile device — one with user-replaceable parts — as early as next month and it won't be a tablet, but a smartphone, according to person close to the company's Project Ara unit.

"People are saying it's a tablet because a benchmarking site said the screen size was 13.8," the person said. "It is indeed 13.8, but in centermeters, not in inches," he added.

It was back in early February that reports came out that the first device from Google under the project will be a tablet, and that the screen size would be 13.8 inch. This had led to a lot of disappointment from tech enthusiasts who were banking on the search giant to finally crack the 'upgrade' problem around smartphones.GOOGLE-project-ara

"It would be funny it was 13.8 inches.. even laptops are smaller than that," the person quoted above said.

Google has previously confirmed that the Ara device will be launched this year, with speculation rife that it could be launched during the Google IO developer event in May.

    AFFORDABLY MODULAR?

The most innovative aspect of the modular phone will of course be its modular nature.

In other words, the device will have various 'modules' — such as one for the camera, one for the display, one for the processor, RAM and radio — much like a PC.

One of the advantages of a traditional PC architecture — particularly for desktops and mini-PCs — is the ease with which its parts can be replaced or upgraded.

If, for example, a user feels like having more power, he can replace the microprocessor without having to also buy a new hard-disk, RAM, display, power supply unit and so on. Similarly, the memory can be upgraded without spending money on the CPU.

In case of phones, this is not possible due to the way everything is assembled together to save space. Components are usually compactly soldered or even etched to the main board and it's impossible to replace the parts without running the risk of 'bricking' the phone.

As a result, a phone is as up-to-date as its oldest component,  and people are forced to buy a new device when they want a device with more memory, or a better camera or more processing power.

Google's Project Ara phone will address this problem, giving the user an option to swap core units like the CPU and camera module.

Of course, the degree of 'swappability' won't be of the same degree as a desktop as phones are built around SoCs or systems on chips. These SoCs, known by names such as Helio X20, Snapdragon 820 and so on, are mini-systems in themselves and contain — in addition to a core application processor — also the graphics processor and the phone's radio components such as GSM/LTE modems, a bluetooth module, WLAN and so on.

Still, Project Ara would allow for swapping of basic components such as cameras.

South Korea-based LG Electronics has already made some advancements in introducing modular smartphones with its LG G5 device unveiled last month.

The G5 allows a user to remove the bottom of the phone and insert other modules — such as its custom-built Hi-Fi Plus DAC module or a Cam Plus module. However, Project Ara would go beyond the G5 in its swappability.

Though the benchmarks indicated a configuration of including a Snapdragon 810 processor, 3 GB of RAM and a 5 MP camera on the front, for Ara — these specifications make no sense as they can change for each unit depending on the customer's preferences.

As a result, an exact pricing will also be difficult to predict. However, there is likely to be a 'base' price for the overall structure which would be very low — around $120 or so — which would rise as a user adds specific components to the structure.

What, however, remains to be seen is whether Google can overcome the biggest challenge in designing a modular smartphone — keeping the size and the looks under control. The phone is likely to be first launched in the US.

Samsung Galaxy Note 6 Rumors: Expected Features, Release Date

Samsung has recently launched its much anticipated flagship smartphones Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge in India.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone is available on e-commerce major Flipkart in two colours - Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium while Samsung Galaxy S7 is available in three colours - Gold Platinum, Black Onyx and Silver Titanium respectively.

We like it when our touchscreen is sensitive but in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S7, the users are reporting that it is way to sensitive.

It seems as though Samsung may have something up their sleeves as it gets ready to introduce the next phase of their flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S7, in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Previously, Samsung received at least 20 million of European pre-orders for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge a year ago.

Now there are reasons to believe that the next gen Galaxy Note version will arrive in the market towards the latter half of the year. Besides the TENAA listing, the phone has also been certified in the U.S.by the FCC, the news site says.

The Galaxy S7 smartphone has a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen and the Nexus 6P features a 5.7-inch AMOLED screen.

Samsung's release notes also promise further improvements to performance and stability, bug fixes, and "new and / or enhanced features".

Both devices are powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 820 chipset by Qualcomm.

The report adds that the Galaxy S7 Mini will be 9.9mm thick.

The device will be water resistant and its camera will have dual pixel technology. We know that the update for the Galaxy S5 is awaiting approval, so it should only be a matter of time before it is publically made available.

Others have more modest predictions, pointing out to a 64 or 128 GB storage capacity. Alternatively, you also have the option of downloading the firmware and manually flashing it on your SM-G900L.

HTC 10 Release Date Details: April 12 Launch For 2016 Flagship Smartphone

HTC 10 Release Date Details: April 12 Launch For 2016 Flagship Smartphone

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC has announced the launch date of its new flagship speculated to be called HTC One M10.

HTC has said that we should visit their website at 8 a.m. NY time and 1 p.m. United Kingdom time on the 12th of April. The displays used mediocre LCD panels and the color accuracy was inaccurate.

This way of unveiling the upcoming device is also similar to the HTC One A9's unveiling past year. The much-anticipated offering is now rumoured as the HTC 10.

HTC emerged several years ago as a major smartphone manufacturer, but the company has struggled as growth of the global market has slowed. The HTC One M9, the HTC 10's predecessor, sports the Super LCD 3.

Many fans were expecting the HTC 10 launch date to be revealed at the Mobile World Congress. However, what we got is a number of leaks and rumors. People will have to go to htc.com in order to watch the HTC 10 launch.

The #powerof10 seems to be growing as HTC Corporation is finally gearing up to reveal its flagship smartphone, dubbed as the HTC 10, for 2016.

The announcement comes a week after HTC hinted at new cameras for the phone. "The company claims that the HTC 10 will sport "World First, World Class" front and back cameras". It will have a 8-megapixel front camera along with optical image stabilization to ensure blur-free selfies.

It's also set to feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 system-on-a-chip, whose quad-core CPU has proven to be most capable in initial benchmarking reports.

Dark Souls 3 gets its own wing eating contest in the UKThe enemies are faster, have more attacks and offer more tactical options in how the players engage with the enemies. From April 4 to 29, the contest will have people eat 20 chicken wings as fast as possible.

Microsoft Windows 10 Lumia: No Windows 10 for All Lumia Smartphones

If you found your device on the list and want to upgrade, download the Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app from the Windows Store to begin the upgrade process. Furthermore, it is expected that the upcoming device will release with the Windows 10 Redstone 2 operating system preinstalled. There were rumors that the update was going to be delayed by months.

The Verge has the complete list of Lumia phones that will get the Microsoft Windows 10 mobile update.

Windows Camera was updated today to version 2016.128.141.0, citing bug fixes and stability improvements as what's new.

Nevertheless, if the issue is fixed, even for a handful of users, that is fantastic news. Microsoft had also promised to support all Lumias that arrived since Windows Phone 8's debut, but, when the rollout finally started, only a limited number of smartphones were targeted. The list includes the entire Lumia range ranging from the Lumia 1520, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 930, Lumia 730 and Lumia 735 to Lumia 532, Lumia 830, Lumia 535, Lumia 635, Lumia 540, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 430, and Lumia 435.

Unfortunately, with Microsoft still yet to announce anything, the October release window also remains uncertain, and beyond that, it may also be a bit optimistic.

"As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience", Fortin explained. Microsoft said that the devices with lower hardware configuration were not eligible for Windows 10 upgrade.

Image Credit: Screenshots via Microsoft. Now, they promised that this will not happen again, but Microsoft repeated the old steps. So, the Lumia series devices like Lumia 920 and Lumia 1020 will die with Windows 8.1 OS.

With the arrival of the surface phone, many things are expected to change in the way Microsoft works.

iPhone SE: Cheapest iPhone Ever May Help Apple's Declining Smartphone Sales

Labeling a business that generated over $155 billion in revenue over the last 12 months as struggling might be overstating things somewhat, but with sales of iPhones dropping for the first time ever in the final quarter of 2015, Apple's smartphone business is facing a challenging 2016. The company's first response to the decline was revealed Monday, with the 4-inch iPhone SE, Apple's cheapest ever new smartphone. At $399 it is $250 cheaper than the flagship iPhone 6s, but despite its appealing price, can a 4-inch smartphone really sell in big enough numbers to boost Apple's sales figures?

On Monday, Apple's vice president Greg Joswiak said the smaller iPhone was an "important part" of the company's lineup because some people "simply love smaller phones." He revealed that in 2015, Apple had sold 30 million 4-inch iPhones and while that pales in comparison to the 230 million units Apple sold in total, it is still a significant number.

The iPhone SE retains an almost identical design to the iPhone 5s, which starts at $449, unlocked, from AT&T. The SE replaces the 5s in Apple's line-up but gains significant upgrades on the inside, notably the same A9 chip that powers Apple's flagship iPhone 6s and a 12 megapixel camera which supports 4K video and Apple's Live Photos feature.

The iPhone SE will therefore be a major attraction to those customers who like a 4-inch screen but want something more powerful — as well as those who have previously felt the iPhone was out of their reach financially. "This phone is designed to appeal both to existing owners of 4-inch iPhones and to people who are new to iPhone," Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jackdaw Research, told International Business Times. "The $400 price makes it particularly attractive to those who haven't been able to afford a new iPhone before, as it's $150 less than any previous brand new iPhone."

The sub-$400 price point is a significant move by Apple to enter the mid-range, something it previously tried and failed to do with the iPhone 5c, a colorful version of the iPhone 5s which can now be had from some carriers starting at $349, without contract. Where the 'C' in iPhone 5c was seen to stand for cheap, SE stands for "special edition", as Apple seeks to set the new phone out as something different from its flagships but still offering a premium iPhone experience.

The iPhone 5c failed partly because it was not cheap enough, but also because it was launched alongside the iPhone 5s, meaning it was lost among the hype surrounding the flagship model. Apple quietly removed the iPhone 5c from its line-up within two years of launch.

iPhone SE PriceApple Vice President Greg Joswiak introduces the iPhone SE during an event at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California March 21, 2016. Photo: REUTERS/Stephen Lam

The iPhone SE however is being launched midway between the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7, getting all the attention and therefore being advertised as an alternative to the bigger models and as an iPhone which is finally affordable to those in mature markets.

"I think the price point will definitely help in mature markets for consumers who have not made the jump from feature phones and for Android users who are in the Android ecosystem because of price, and not love for the ecosystem itself," Carolina Milanesi, head of research at Kantar WorldPanel ComTech, told IBT.

The problem for Apple is that getting those who like smaller phones to upgrade is not going to be enough to see iPhone sales grow again. According to figures from CounterPoint Research, just 10 percent of all smartphones sold in December 2015 were 4-inch, down significantly from 17 percent a year previously. For the iPhone SE to be a real success Apple needs it to work in developing countries and in particular the hugely important markets of China and India.

In India, the new lower price may be more appealing to customers, but the small screen won't be. "Emerging markets often gravitate toward the larger-screened phones because those customers are less likely to buy both a tablet and a phone," Dawson said. "So some customers will have to make a tradeoff between price and size."

Another problem in India, as with most other markets outside the U.S.,  is that Apple has priced the iPhone SE much higher than $399. In India the new smartphone will cost 39,000 rupees ($584) which is "just too expensive for a 4-inch device" Neil Shah from CounterPoint Research told IBT.

"In a mobile-first country like India, this is beyond the reach of the average smartphone user," Shah said, adding that you can get a 5.5-inch OnePlus flagship smartphone with 64GB of storage for around $350.

In China, the situation is somewhat different. In what is Apple's second biggest market, the iconic brand holds sway among consumers. An iPhone is seen as a status symbol as much as it is a smartphone. That means shoppers are willing to pay more for the Apple logo despite dozens of imitation smartphones which look almost identical to the iPhone being available from Chinese manufacturers for much less money.

The iPhone 5c was seen by some as an attempt by Apple to crack the Chinese market, and while some analysts believe the iPhone SE could have a similar fate, there are indications that it will have a much better chance of success.

In China, unlike other almost all other smartphone markets around the world, the average selling price of smartphones is going up and not down, according to figures from Canalys. "Consumers are losing their appetite for ultra-low-cost devices, as expectations increase in line with spending power and, combined with rising market saturation, this is resulting in a major shift to devices that provide better user experience," Canalys analyst Jingwen Wang said in a release.

With its mid-cycle release the iPhone SE will still be seen as a premium Apple device and the very latest on the market from the Cupertino company, something the iPhone 5c could never claim.  Therefore Chinese customers who place such importance on the cachet of a premium Apple smartphone will view the iPhone SE as a viable option — and one which is significantly cheaper than the iPhone 6s.

Pre-Release Reviews Streaming in for Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge

As part of the S7 launch, Samsung and JetPackMan will be shooting 360 degree video footage around the country and released on social media over the coming weeks.

Specifically, YouTube user Jerome Ortega ran a performance test across various top devices, including the Moto X Pure Edition, the Nexus 6P, the Galaxy S7 edge, and the iPhone 6s Plus. AT&T customers can also get up to $650 in credits per line to move their mobile phone accounts to AT&T from a competitor under the offer. If you order before March 18 you will also get a Gear VR headset plus a year of Netflix for free.

Soon after Samsung announced the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in late February, the company's officials stated that they expect these smartphones to sell much better than the previous flagships. This time, they have removed Samsung Pay from the Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

The program, which is similar to the one launched by Apple in September, allows consumers on a 24-month installment agreement to pay an extra fee for the opportunity to trade in their existing device for the latest Samsung smartphone after one year.

The 5.1-inch Galaxy S7 and 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 edge are an act of refinement for Samsung, improving over the S6 in a number of subtle ways. "Available in Black Onyx and priced at $649.99 (plus tax), Galaxy S7 can be paired with no-contract plans from Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile, giving customers a couple of great options to fit their needs", said Sprint corporate relations officer, Danielle Babbington. The carrier will be offering customers who buy two Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphones on equipment installation plan a full retail price of the second phone but in the form of a prepaid debit card.

The cameras on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, which has trimmed pixel density from 16MP to 12MP, features the first Dual Pixel camera on a smartphone, which delivers brighter and sharper images, even in low-light.

iPhone SE Release Date, Specs, Features, Price

The release of the iPhone SE is just around the corner, with Apple expected to announce this smaller iPhone competitor in the next few days. A four-inch smartphone from the world's leading consumer electronics brand has been anticipated for some time, with Apple both intending to create a new revenue stream and also fulfil the vision of its late founder and CEO Steve Jobs. It seems that Jobs believed that the ideal smartphone screen size is 3.5-inches, and if Apple hasn't quite produced such a diminutive handset with the iPhone SE, It has manufactured a unit that goes against the prevailing trends of the industry for ever larger devices.

    iPhone SE

    iPhone SE release date

The iPhone SE will be unveiled at a special event on March 21, during which Apple will give pre-order and release date details for the handset. It is probable that the four-inch iPhone will be available in a couple of weeks after the March 21 event, so an April release date looks to be a certainty.

    Design

Apple is expected to dispense with the colorful and plasticky feel of previous affordable iPhone releases, and instead ensure that the iPhone SE is a more classy device altogether. The build of the iPhone SE is thus expected to be rather similar to the existing iPhone 6s, suggesting a largely aluminum and glass visage for this handset.

Also, although Apple is expected to phase out the headphone jack when the iPhone 7 is released, in favor of wireless solutions, this typical feature is expected to be included in the iPhone SE.

    Display

It is expected that the iPhone SE will feature a four-inch display and that the resolution of the screen will be equal to the existing iPhone 6s. This would mean a screen resolution of 750 x 1,334 pixels, but that the iPhone SE would exceed the 326ppi pixel density achieved by the iPhone 6s.

    Camera

It has been widely reported that the iPhone SE will feature an eight-megapixel camera that will be roughly similar in quality to the one included in the iPhone 6s. This would be pretty impressive considering that the four-inch iPhone variant is intended to be a more affordable version of the premium iPhone smartphone. Some reports have also suggested that Apple will imbue this smartphone competitor with 4K video recording capabilities, suggesting that the camera will certainly be a powerful unit.

Meanwhile, with the iPhone SE being particularly targeted at younger consumers, it is suggested that Apple will arm the handset with a disproportionately powerful front-facing camera. The intention being to entice the 'selfie-generation' to purchase this more affordable variant. So it is possible that the iPhone SE will feature a five-megapixel front-facing camera, with the intention of delivering an outstanding selfie-capturing experience.

    3D Touch

It is certainly not anticipated that Apple will include the 3D Touch system that it debuted in the iPhone range last year when the iPhone SE is unveiled. This pressure-sensitive functionality will be a way of keeping the premium iPhone series separate from its more affordable variant, and thus it is not expected that 3D Touch will be included.

    Apple Pay

Apple is expected to place a particular emphasis on Apple Pay when the iPhone SE is unveiled, as the affordable variant to the premium iPhone will be viewed as a way of kickstarting the mobile payment system. Mobile payments will be a multi-billion, and even trillion dollar, industry in the coming years, and Apple is now well placed to be the market leader in this niche, as in so many others.

    Battery

Reports from China have indicated that the battery in the iPhone SE will only be marginally smaller than the existing iPhone 6s. Apple will be viewing this iPhone release as a convenient unit that delivers the base features that smartphone consumers want from a handset at an affordable price point.

So a non-removable Li-Po 1,600 mAh battery has been linked with the iPhone SE, and this should deliver outstanding battery life if it does indeed come to fruition. Considering that the iPhone SE will have a significantly smaller screen than previous iPhone units – and also that Apple will include power saving functionality in iOS 10, an operating system that will eventually be compatible with the smartphone – the iPhone SE should deliver excellent battery life.

    Storage

The iPhone SE will offer a budget 16GB storage model, intended to make the base version of the smartphone as cheap as possible. Elsewhere, reports have suggested that the maximum capacity of the iPhone SE will be 64GB, which is obviously somewhat less than the 128GB maximum that the iPhone 6s offered. However, these are not devices intended for mass storage, rather simple handsets which will find favor with more casual and fun-focused smartphone users.

    Processor

The most recent reports on the iPhone SE suggest that it will be driven by the A9 chip found in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Considering the stripped down specifications in other areas, this will effectively ensure that the iPhone SE is an extremely slick performer.

    Memory

It is expected that the iPhone SE will come complete with 1GB of RAM memory, identical to the specifications of the 2014 iPhone 6.

    Connectivity

Firstly, an NFC chip will be present, as this is essential for the Apple Pay system. It is also expected that Bluetooth 4.2 and the enhanced 802.11ac WiFi chip found within the iPhone 6s will be present.

    Colors

The iPhone SE is expected to be released in the same colors as the iPhone 6s, namely Silver, Gold, Rose Gold, and Space Gray.

    Price

Apple has naturally revealed no information regarding the pricing of this unit, and there has been a good deal of analyst speculation which could be considered less than informed. However, the general consensus of opinion is that this smartphone will launch at around the $450 price point off-contract, and there will no doubt be numerous purchasing options available for those willing to accept a contractual arrangement.

Finally! Nintendo releases its first smartphone game

The Kyoto-based company has promised to bring hits like Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong to smartphones, helping to boost its share price 33 per cent past year.

Nintendo is launching the "Miitomo" app in Japan on Thursday featuring its customizable characters called Miis. After you set up or import your Mii, you answer a set of "conversation starter" questions which are then gradually shared within your Nintendo Network friend list.

Nintendo is finally coming to the smartphone, but it's not exactly the kind of app you'd expect from a company known for its games and consoles.

The Japanese company has struggled as Sony Corp and Microsoft Corp outpaced it in console sales, while the three companies are also fighting off a trend toward cheap – even free – downloadable games for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Users can look at their friends' answers to these questions and commment on them, all the while earning coins to spend on clothes and other equipment.

The virtual reality and augmented reality hardware industry is expected to reach US$110 billion by 2025, Alibaba cited Goldman Sachs Group Inc research as saying.

"Miitomo" users can add real-world friends' Miis to the app by finding them through social networking apps.

He outlined four main areas of operation for Nintendo: Dedicated game consoles, smartphone apps, licensed merchandise and partnerships like a tie-up with Universal Studios to put Nintendo characters in theme parks.

"Miitomo" forgoes numerous features of Tomodachi Life" and mostly focuses on festooning avatars. NeoGAF users and Dr. Serkan Toto immediately noticed the Miitomo Drop minigame in the app, which is basically a pachinko machine that rewards players with new clothing for their Mii.

Kotaku reports that you don't need a Nintendo Account to sign in, but having one allows you to sync your profile across devices and complete missions to score points.

    Samsung Galaxy S8 [CONCEPT IMAGES]

With the Galaxy S7 now in the can, attention at Samsung is already turning to the next generation Galaxy S8. The consumer electronics market moves so quickly that the next smartphone release is in fact being planned before the existing one has even hit the stores!

    Samsung Galaxy S8

    Galaxy S8 concept images produced

Indeed, the anticipation for new smartphones is such that the first Galaxy S8 concept has already emerged. igalaxys8samsung.com is the source of these particular renders, and the website imagines a handset that features a metal frame covered in glass. This would present a sleek appearance for the next generation flagship smartphone, although some observers have suggested that the design is better suited to a Galaxy Note 6 or Galaxy Note 7.

One of the most notable physical aspects of this concept image is the barely visible bezels on either side of the display. It is noticeable that there is an increasing tendency in, not only the smartphone industry but the consumer electronics niche as a whole, to slim down bezels. Samsung's own range of high-end television sets are notable for having barely any bezels at all, with the once bold Samsung branding that would have appeared on the exterior now only just visible.

In addition, the front-facing camera unit in this Galaxy S8 concept is rather small, and it appears that the rear camera flash is excluded from the device completely. These renders provide an interesting taster of some of the design aspects that Samsung could presently be considering for the Galaxy S8.

    Battery breakthrough

Elsewhere, there is already indication that the next generation Samsung flagship could benefit from innovative battery technology. A new development for fuel cells could produce batteries that are able to power smartphones for double the length of their current battery lives, revolutionising the industry and making utilizing the next generation smartphones considerably more convenient.

    Samsung Galaxy S8

The battery in question is described as a "solid oxide fuel cell", and it has been discovered by researchers based at a university in South Korea. Pohang University of Science and Technology has uncovered this extremely important technology, and this is certainly good news for Samsung as it attempts to bite back in the ongoing war with Apple at the head of the premium smartphone marketplace.

And the fact that this has been discovered and developed on the home turf of Samsung means that the possibility of this appearing in the next generation Galaxy S8 is significantly increased. This would be excellent news for Samsung, considering that it already has a significant edge over Apple in the battery life of its flagship smartphone.

The scale of this particular innovation should not be underestimated nor understated. Firstly, the breakthrough represents the first ever time that anyone has been able to combine porous stainless steel with fine-film electrolytes and electrodes. The university also points out that the devices in question are of minimal heat capacity, which makes the innovation even more impressive and valuable.

Not only are the batteries in question potentially able to pump out significantly more power than the existing lithium-ion technology that is common in smartphones, but it is also significantly more durable as well. This provides great potential for drones and electric vehicles, which could make Apple's ears prick up, considering its apparent intention to produce an Apple Car in the near future.

One problem for the Galaxy S8 is that it is not entirely clear when this new battery technology will arrive in a form compatible with consumer electronics. Industrial uses are certainly expected, but it is probable that Samsung would need to sign off on any technology included in the Galaxy S8 by roughly September of this year.

    4K resolution coming

Aside from the battery technology and concept images, it is reasonable to assume that the Galaxy S8 will be an absolute stonker in terms of specifications and features. One aspect that can be particularly predicted with regard to this 2017 smartphone is the inclusion of a 4K resolution display.

    Samsung-Galaxy-S8-design-b

It seems that Samsung likes to lay the groundwork for its flagship smartphone with the high spec Galaxy Note phablet range before including new technology. And with the Galaxy Note 6 largely anticipated to include a 4K display in 2016, this could mean that the Galaxy S8 finally migrates to 4K next year.

With Samsung increasingly consumed with slimming down its flagship smartphone as well as reducing the amount of bezel included in its devices, it is believed that the Galaxy S8 could feature an edge-to-edge screen display. This has been linked with numerous smartphones over the years, with Samsung particularly expected to take a lead in this department, and some smartphones, of course, already feature this technology, most notably the Sharp Aquos Crystal.

    Memory boost

Samsung is also expected to ensure that the Galaxy S8 features 256GB of on-board memory storage, boosting the capacity above the 200GB that is possible in the existing generation via micro SD. Apple is expected to increase the storage capacity of the premium version of the iPhone 7 to 256GB, and thus this would be a direct response to the most obvious rival of the Korean corporation.

Whether this would ultimately result in Samsung ditching micro SD once more from the Galaxy S8 remains to be seen. But there would certainly be protest against this concept considering the flexibility that it offers, and the fact that Samsung fans were generally up in arms when it was jettisoned from other Galaxy S releases.

Finally, the Galaxy S8 could have a significant gaming focus when it is released, as some reports have already indicated that the Korean electronics giant is working on an extremely powerful chip architecture with the intention of integrating it within the Galaxy S8. It is even been suggested by some sources that this will place the Galaxy S8 roughly on a par with the PS4 and Xbox One consoles.

So even if the Galaxy S7 is barely out of the gates, there is certainly much to look forward to with the 2017 Galaxy S8 release.

Indian smartphone startup Creo releases more details about its new take on Android

Creo, the Indian startup that recently received $3 million in funding to create a new twist on Android, has unveiled its first smartphone, called the Mark 1. A promotional video has been posted, but the company hasn't released hardware details yet. Founder Sai Srinivas tells TechCrunch that leaked specs cited in some reports are inaccurate, but emphasizes that Creo won't compete on hardware.

Instead, its ambitious goal is to release regular updates to its Android skin that are so unique, Mark 1 users will feel like they "get a new phone every month" (the company's marketing slogan).

India is now the second-largest smartphone market in the world after China. The Mark 1 is launching at a tough time for Indian smartphone makers, however, as they battle competition from foreign companies. For example, New Delhi-based Micromax was the top smartphone brand in India last year, but that position has been supplanted by Samsung. Xiaomi and Lenovo are also aggressively wooing Indian consumers—even though both companies are based in China, they each opened a smartphone manufacturing plant in India last year.

Creo will manufacture its own devices, too, but Srinivas believes that "hardware is no longer a differentiator." So far, Creo's software-centric approach has been backed by Sequoia India, Beenext Ventures, and India Quotient, which participated in Creo's first funding round.

"Everyone else boosts the same hardware, cameras, processors. There's no point in doing that anymore," Srinivas says. "That's why we believe our philosophy is very, very valid, because at the end of the day, the user is not going to see the hardware. They will see the software and the more the user can get from the software month after month, the more attached they will be."

The Mark 1's software features will focus on enhancing its caller experience, device security, app performance, and cellular data management.

"A lot of things can be done very, very well from the OS layer, but not the app layer, that enhance user experience," Srinivas explains. Creo's developers will rely on feedback from its users in order to determine what will be included in each month's updates.

That tactic is similar to the community-based approach that Xiaomi and Cyanogen take to create their Android skins. Srinivas says that the comparison is "very valid," but adds that Creo's strategy will be different because it isn't interested in making changes to Android's user interface.

"In fact, you will notice that we will stick as close to Android's stock UI as possible. The idea is to build functional features that no other smartphone has. We will introduce features that MIUI or stock Android and even Cyanogen don't have."

Many of the Mark 1's software features—especially the ones for saving data—are meant to appeal to the Indian market. In fact, Creo's founding team previously worked on another hardware startup, Mango Man, that created a HDMI dongle especially for India. Creo's goal, however, is to create an OS that it can license to international hardware manufacturers. After India, it will focus on expansion in Southeast Asia before finding partners in other countries.

The Mark 1's price won't be disclosed until India finalizes changes to its tax law. Srinivas says it will be mid-range–more than the sub-$100 smartphones that are helping build India's smartphone market, but less than $400.

Nintendo releases first smartphone game to take on rivals

TOKYO: Nintendo on Thursday (Mar 17) rolled out its first smartphone game after years of refusing to stray from a consoles-only policy as it tries to better compete with rivals.

The Japanese company has struggled as Sony and Microsoft outpaced it in console sales, while the three companies are also fighting off a trend toward cheap - even free - downloadable games for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Kyoto-based Nintendo had been criticised for its longstanding refusal to license some of its iconic brands for use on mobile applications.

Now, free-to-play "Miitomo" allows players to create their own "Mii" avatars, customise their outfit through in-app purchases and interact with characters created by other people or friends.

Mii avatars also ask questions to players such as "What did you do on the weekend?" and "What is your favourite food?," with the answers shared with other characters.

The release of the smartphone game "is another step forward" for Nintendo to increase the number of people who play games, a spokesman told AFP.

The game was only released in Japan initially but will be rolled out in 15 other countries including the United States and France in eight languages later this month, he said.

The move comes after the maker of the Super Mario and Pokemon franchises last year announced a tie-up with Tokyo-based mobile gaming company DeNA to develop games for smartphones.

Nintendo also bought a stake in DeNA as part of a deal to develop smartphone games based on its host of popular characters, possibly including Super Mario and Donkey Kong.

Then Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, a leading figure in the videogame industry who died from cancer in July at the age of 55, had said the Nintendo-DeNA tie-up would help tap a new customer base.

iPhone 7 Release Date, Rumors, Specs: New Flagship to Reveal Curvier and Flexible Design?

AppleRumors has it that Apple will be releasing a new smartphone called iPhone 7 this year.

Apple users are still hung over by the release of the iPhone 6S and yet, the rumors surrounding the specs and design of the new iPhone 7 are already creating a buzz.

The tech giant remains mum about the release date for iPhone 7. Initial reports claimed that it's going to be in March or the second quarter of 2016. But it seems the launch is going to be pushed back further.

Despite the rumors, it's not clear if the iPhone 7 will feature the curvy and flexible design that Apple has been working on. What seems to be likely at this point is it will deviate from the design of the iPhone 6S.

"The iPhone 7 will mark a new design direction for the company that has time and again set the standard in smartphone aesthetics," said Digital Spy, which also puts the release date for the iPhone 7 in the third quarter of 2016.

One of the more interesting specs for the iPhone 7 was shared by designer Marek Weidlich who dropped the home button on the gadget and converted the whole front display into a huge screen.

"I focused on simple design language which is very important for Apple," Weidlich shared in a report from Mirror. "I designed a curved display without a bezel, and equipped with a software home button."

According to the N4BB, the rumored specs for the new iPhone 7 include a 3GB of RAM and probably the A10 processor, improved 3D Touch and a 12MP camera.

The release date for the iPhone 7 is reported to be in September 2016.
